2021/2022 DONOR REPORT 1What a difference a year makes! The 2021/2022 school year was remarkable for all the things we joyfully resumed after 18 months of pandemic-imposed limitations. September began tentatively with masking requirements in place, many teams and clubs were held virtually, and lunches were consumed in the classroom. As the year unfolded, so did the sense of normalcy, reminding us of all the small pleasures we’d desperately missed. Communal lunch in the Dining Hall was a highlight. Parents — many of whom had never been on Crescent grounds — had numerous opportunities to gather and socialize at in-person, on-campus events.Co-curricular activities and other Crescent experiences abounded. We saw record participation in spring athletics. The Arts Department staged three dramatic productions along with the popular LUNA arts extravaganza. We gave our Middle and Upper School graduating students a memorable year-end off-site experience to connect with their brothers as they came to the end of this part of their journey. Our graduating ceremonies for students in Grades 6, 8 and 12 were momentous. The alumni reunion — the first in three years — was the most well-attended in memory. It was truly great to be back.Remarkably, the philanthropic spirit in our community never wavered despite the challenging times. I am humbled to acknowledge over $6.7 million in charitable contributions in 2021/2022, including over $1.2 million raised through Parent Annual Giving. Much of the funds raised support Student Financial Assistance and the capital projects associated with Crescent’s Master Campus Plan (MCP). We are proud to have welcomed 45 students whose Crescent education was made possible by the financial support available to them. In November, our boys enjoyed the first winter season under the air-supported dome upon our newly-refurbished Innes Field. This MCP Phase I enhancement to our athletic facilities provides more indoor space for phys-ed and recess and allows us to offer more athletics programs, like rugby, soccer and intramural options over the winter season.With the pandemic in the rearview mirror and so much optimism in our future, I eagerly anticipate what more we can achieve together.Michael Fellin P’24 HeadmasterA MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL FELLIN P’24HEADMASTER

2 2021/2022 DONOR REPORTA MESSAGE FROM JOHN LYNCH P’16,’18EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, EXTERNAL RELATIONSSincere thanks to everyone who included Crescent School in their philanthropic priorities in the last year. There are more than 86,000 registered charities in Canada and we never take your philanthropy for granted — your trust needs to be earned every day. Thanks to your generosity Crescent received more than $6.7 million in new pledges and outright donations in the fiscal year 2021/2022. This was achieved during a worldwide pandemic, which caused some significant impacts upon the day-to-day learning for our boys, as well as some negative impacts upon the health, employment and financial stability of our Crescent community. No family was immune from the pandemic.Our Parent Annual Giving program continues to be the envy of the 90+ CAIS independent schools in terms of the percentage of Crescent parents who donate (almost 75% annually) as well as the total cash donations received (more than $1.2M). Thank you!We also received more than $5.5 million in Major Gift pledges last year. These leadership level commitments, often pledged over a five-year period, enable the School to deliver upon the Board-approved priorities of our Master Campus Plan and the Endowment in support of Student Financial Assistance. Master Campus Plan priorities including the new Field and Dome installed on Innes Field as well as the artificial turfing of the Formal Garden have been fully funded. The Crescent Endowment has grown to more than $21M toward our goal of $25M by 2026. The Endowment permits us the opportunity to enrol remarkable mission-fit boys from across the GTA to share their significant talents with their Crescent peers when their family financial circumstances would not normally permit them to attend the School. This helps us to deliver on our goal to have Crescent School be more reflective of the Toronto of today. While this Annual Report summarizes the fundraising progress of the School in 2021/2022, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge some significant staffing changes in the Advancement Office of the School. Crescent welcomed its new Chief Advancement Officer, Jamie Lougheed ‘87, to the team in January 2023, and Kathryn Foster will return to Crescent in February following a year away to become Crescent’s new Director of Development. We bid sincere thanks and farewell to Jill Cannon, Director of Advancement, who will be moving to another Toronto CAIS school following almost 17 years of employment at Crescent. This will also be my final report as I will be retiring from Crescent and the world of work in February 2023 following almost 17 wonderful years here. It has truly been an honour and a privilege for Jill and for me to gain your friendship and trust and to serve the School over the past two decades. 2021/2022 DONOR REPORT 3The 2021/2022 year was another success for our Crescent Alumni Executive, of which I had the privilege of chairing for the first time. The Alumni Executive is an outstanding group of committed alumni who volunteer their time to chair and assist in the running and implementation of our varied alumni events and programs. Without their service, we could not offer the programs that we do. Although some Covid restrictions kept us on Zoom, we were able to engage with many of our alumni in person. 4 2021/2022 DONOR REPORTAs at June 30, 2022, The Crescent School Foundation achieved a year-end value of $20.27 million. After several years of rising markets, this past year was a more diffi cult one for investors as balanced portfolios experienced negative investment returns from both bond and equity components. Rising infl ation and the war in Ukraine created a negative backdrop for Canadian and global equity markets and bonds. These are asset classes that are represented in the Crescent School Foundation investment portfolio. From time to time, we experience negative market returns due to unforeseen events or cyclical market factors, but we are committed to a long-term view towards investing rather than trying to time markets and believe that our portfolio continues to be well-positioned through diversifi cation across asset classes and investment styles for the eventual recovery in capital markets. New donations in FY22 from our generous donors were directed towards Student Financial Assistance, Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund, Robotics and Technology, Student Health & Wellbeing, and Local Outreach. I would like to offer a special thank you to parents of the Class of 2022 who established The Grant, Jansen, Porteous Class of 2022 Scholarship in honour of their sons’ graduation and three beloved faculty members upon their retirement. These parents raised $41,000 in support of endowed Student Financial Assistance.In FY 2021/2022, The Foundation disbursed over $651,000 in support of various School programs with approximately 76% directed in support of needs-based Student Financial Assistance. This annual disbursement continues in perpetuity ensuring critical funding to key programmatic areas that directly benefi t our boys.The Foundation’s Directors review quarterly and annual fi nancials and establish and review investment and disbursement policies. In addition, the Foundation Board conducts annual reviews of the fi rms we employ to manage the endowment, to preserve and grow the Foundation’s assets in the long term. Endowment donations are incredibly important to ensure the sustainability of the School’s programs and we take our stewardship responsibility in this regard very seriously. We strive to continue to receive your trust and confi dence in the years ahead. This was my fi rst year as Chair of The Crescent School Foundation. 2021/2022 DONOR REPORT 5 CHAIR OF THE DEVELOPEMENT COMMITTEEWhile tuition covers the cost of fundamental school operations, it is the generosity of giving through charitable gifts that provide the much-needed support for new facilities, enhancements to our signature academic programs and additional funds for Student Financial Assistance. We are truly proud of the rich heritage of generosity that has existed at Crescent School, for decades, in support of our sons’ educational experience. All of the facilities on campus that our boys benefit from each and every day are the direct result of the generosity of current and past parents, alumni and grandparents. They have supported the School to ensure we can evolve with the changing needs of a future Crescent education. I feel deeply that it is the responsibility of every generation of Crescent families to do the same and support the School for current AND future boys of promise.We had another very successful year of fundraising with support from all constituent groups including current and past parents, alumni, faculty and staff, grandparents, and students. Our Parent Annual Giving program, which raised over $1.2 million, continues to be the most successful program of its kind among our peer schools in the GTA.
