What is ros Pink The French say ros Italians say Rosato and the Spanish call it Rosado No matter what you call it the ros category is one of the most versatile in the market Why is it pink The color simply comes from a winemaker allowing the juice from the grapes to only stay in contact with the skins for a short period during the winemaking process A winemaker may allow the skin contact to occur from less than an hour or up to several days When producing a red wine the skin contact period varies from several days to sometimes over a month There is an exception to this practice and that is for Sparkling Wine production When making a sparkling ros it is common practice to blend red wine and white wine to create a ros What grapes are used for ros Ros can be made from any red grape What grapes are used are dependent on what grows in the region where the wine is produced So from Oregon we get wonderful ros s made from Pinot Noir where as in Provence they will make ros from grapes that grow there like Grenache Cinsault Syrah and Mourvedre If it s pink is it sweet The color doesn t determine sweetness Whether a wine is made in a sweet or dry style has more to do with whether the winemaker let the wine ferment to dryness or stopped fermentation before the yeast converted all of the sugar into alcohol Ros can be found in a variety of styles and in fact most is dry Can ros age Most ros is consumed when it is young often starting the spring after the harvest This is when the flavors are bright vivid and fresh Some ros s have more staying power with more robust flavors and can be enjoyed over a couple of years For example ros s from Tavel like our Chateau d Aqueria or the Artazuri Rosado from Navarra have more concentration and a touch more tannin profile that provide these wines the ability the be enjoyed over several years
