Welcome to NJ TransAction Conference’s First-Ever Virtual Conference First, on behalf of the NJ TransAction Conference Committee, we hope that you, your family, and employees are safe and have stayed safe and healthy during these unimaginable times. Who could have ever imagined a world-wide pandemic occurring and shutting down and curtailing life as we know it? We were set to meet this past April in Atlantic City for our 44th Annual NJ TransAction Conference. The contracts were signed and planning was complete. All we needed to do was show up. This story does not need to continue - we all know what happened. The members of the NJ TransAction Committee could have packed up for 2020 but, they did not. Discussions and concerns turned to our most dedicated exhibitors and friends. Their business were suffering. They could not meet with their customers. Finding new work was practically impossible. The idea was floated about bringing the 2020 NJ TransAction Conference into a virtual realm. The idea to hold a virtual conference was to help our exhibitors and our most loyal attendees and provide them with business connections and networking opportunities – even though this could not be done live and in-person. For the immediate near future, we all need to get accustomed to this new format. TransAction contracted with one of the County’s most successful virtual conference platforms; Vfairs. Since this was new to all of us, a virtual conference production company was also hired to assist us in building this new virtual meeting place. On behalf of the NJ TransAction Conference, we want to thank O’Design Productions and Consulting and our assigned representatives Carmela, Abby, and Tony, who since July has been working diligently to bring this conference to you. With the exception of not being able to be with each other physically, today’s conference is remarkably similar to our Atlantic City version. There are 80 workshop sessions – many of which are planning and engineering CM eligible. We want to thank all those presenters, moderators, and session coordinators who worked tirelessly to produce their workshop sessions. From initially planning to have all the workshop sessions pre-recorded, ideas changed, and we are delighted to bring you 8 totally live webinar session presentations on October 20th. October 20th, is considered the “Live Event Day” for the conference. Beside the totally live presentations taking place, some pre-recorded sessions will also have “live” chat functions while other sessions where questions arise will be answered throughout the day by presenters. We are excited that 50 exhibitors have joined us. It was a bold and new step for them. On October 20th all exhibit booths will be virtually live with company representatives available to hold live text, audio, and video chat conversations. We even provide the exhibitors with free admission passes to the exhibit hall and suggested they distribute them to their customers and potential new business clients. Inside the exhibit hall, 6 students representing Rutgers and Rowan Universities have Poster Session Booths. These students will monitor their booths live on October 20th and answer questions regarding their projects. This conference does not end on October 20th, arrangements have been made to keep the conference active until November 19, 2020. After October 21st, the conference converts to an on-demand format. The only change is there is no live presentations (these have been converted to on-demand videos) and the exhibitors are not available to chat live. You may still visit the booths, download all the brochures and information, email the exhibitor representatives and watch or re-watch all the workshop sessions. HELPFUL TIPS to Navigate into the Virtual Conference Consider attending from your home. Since this may be your very first virtual conference, treat it as if you are attending a live in-person conference. You might consider viewing (attending) this conference on October 20, 2020 from your home or a place where you cannot be interrupted. After canceling the original April dates and later realizing that an in-person conference was no longer feasible for the remainder of the year, the NJ TransAction Conference Committee discussed the importance of doing something for exhibitors who have always been very loyal to the NJ TransAction Conference. Knowing that their business communication had been adversely affected throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Committee decided to go forward and take a gamble on presenting a virtual conference. Welcome to the … STUDENT POSTER SESSION The 2020 NJ TransAction Virtual Conference is delighted to welcome six (6) students representing Rutgers and Rowen Universities as they present their individual Transportation Poster Session. The Poster Session is a contest sponsored by the Philadelphia Chapter of the Woman’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) with the assistance from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC). (POSTER SESSION 1) Automated Analysis of Surrogate Safety Measures and Non-compliance Behavior of all Road Users at an Intersection This study presents an innovative artificial intelligence-based video analytic tool to evaluate the surrogate safety measures and non-compliance behaviors of road users at intersections. The proposed work performs detection and tracking with a machine-learning algorithm to extract the trajectory data. The stress experienced during the commute or getting stuck in traffic worsens our overall life satisfaction. It not only affects our overall life but it also leaves impact on family life, leisure and health. The commute time is increasing so is the traffic congestion, more and more people are spending their time in car. This research can aid policy makers to improve transit planning and make cities/neighborhoods more walkable and bike friendly. Author: Aditi Manke, Rutgers University (POSTER SESSION 3) Application of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to Reduce Wrong-Way Driving Crashes: A Review of Case Studies The main objective of this study is to summarize the effectiveness of ITS technologies to mitigate and prevent wrong-way driving crashes based on a review of case studies by transportation agencies.Author: Parisa Hosseini, Rowan University Co-Author: Dr. Mohammad Jalayer (POSTER SESSION 4) Investigation of Work Zone Crashes in New Jersey Using Support Vector Machine Work zone crashes have been a growing concern recently across the nation as well as in the state of New Jersey. We collected three years of work zone crash data for New Jersey. We used Support Vector Machine, a supervised machine learning algorithm to train and test our data. To identify the important variables, we used Classification and Regression Tree. Results showed that the crash type, number of vehicles, alcohol involved, lighting conditions, type of vehicles involved and speed limit are the variables that influence the crash severity most and the prediction accuracy of model is more than 95%. Finally, we did the sensitivity analysis of the important crash variables by permutation method and suggested the countermeasures of work zone crashes in New Jersey. 2020 STUDENT POSTER DESCRIPTIONS (POSTER SESSION 5) What is the Elasticity of Sharing a Ridesourcing Trip? Transportation network companies (TNCs) offer a ride-splitting option for ridesourcing trips, allowing users to share the vehicle with others at a lower fare. While encouraging shared rides has environmental benefits, little is known about how price effects the decision to share. Using TNC trip data from Chicago, we investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of authorized ride-splitting trips in 2019. We found that the willingness to share TNC trips was related to the price per mile, total price, and trip duration. We estimate logistic regression and random forest models to determine the marginal price and time effects on the decision to share, which shed light on policies that encourage shared trips. Author: Sicheng Wang, Rutgers University Co-Author: Dr. Robert Noland (POSTER SESSION 6) Identifying the Potential of Transportation in Trenton Most transportation analysis has New York and New Jersey as an outlier because the number of trips taken in public transit across both states is significantly high compared to the rest of the United States. This study identified the gaps and potential of transportation in the City of Trenton, which is also the capital and serving as a major regional administrative center in New Jersey. The study investigated the existing regional connectivity, vehicle ownership, income level, land-use change, and analyzed the data using GIS techniques. The Blue Comet was a deluxe and plush train that ran between Jersey City and Atlantic City from 1929 until 1941. The Blue Comet was America's first deluxe train in which there was no premium fare charged and included a full dining car, observation lounge car, and deluxe coaches with triple cushioned bucket seats. It is NJ's most famous passenger train. Photos of the train’s only wreck also appear in this presentation. The Blue Comet book written by Frank Reilly (Chair of the NJ TransAction Conference) with numerous color and B&W photos along with first person accounts is available for $20 (postage paid). The Central RR of NJ: From Coal Mines to NY Harbor (1949) Room: Auditorium # 2 Length: 0:38:08 This professionally produced film was commissioned by the railroad to celebrate its 100th anniversary and includes many exciting aspects of the railroad during one of its finest years. It was awarded, in 1949, the best corporate film of the year. Frank Reilly, Retired Director of the Morris County DOT, came across the original 16mm color, sound film more than 40 years ago. On the film canister were the letters NG (for No Good). Frank had a professional movie producer examine and clean it. It was in perfect condition. Upon checking with other railroad officials, Frank learned the film was updated in 1953 to eliminate all the steam locomotive scenes and replace them with diesel locomotives. Added to the end of this film are two silent film videos including the Central RR of NJ’s Ashley Planes where freight trains were hauled up the mountain from the Wyoming Valley in Ashley, PA to Mountain Top and the 1926 opening of the massive 4 track wide Newark Bay Bridge, which is over a mile long. Both of these productions for the railroad are very rare. Membership in the CNJ Historical Society is $25 annually and includes quarterly CNJ History Journals of 20 pages on slick paper with color and B&W photos plus a full color annual CNJ calendar (a $16 value). Most exciting stories by former CNJ employees. Many readers proclaim it the best rail historical group publication. The CNJ ceased railroad operations on April 1, 1976. 41
