Vianna Szabo Painting Pastels Using expressive color Vianna interprets the world around her to tell a visual story Whether she is working in pastel oil or watercolor she s inspired to capture a moment by painting light and atmosphere to express emotion Vianna believes painting is a journey of creative study and encourages her students to learn the fundamentals so they express their own artistic voice Vianna exhibits regularly in juried shows including the Pastel Society of America The Portrait Society of America Oil Painters of America the American Impressionist Society The Michigan Watercolor Society and The Adirondacks Watercolor Society She has served as a juror in shows including the Pastel Society of the West Coast The International Association of Pastel Societies and the Figurative Portrait Juror for the Pastel Journal s Pastel 100 competition Vianna teaches workshops nationally and abroad She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and has achieved Distinguished Pastelist status in the Pastel Society of the West Coast She was inducted into the International Association of Pastel Societies Master Circle in 2011 and achieved Eminent Pastelist status in 2015 and earned signature member status in the Michigan Watercolor Society in 2020 4
Laurie Tennent Photography Laurie Tennent is an American photographer known for her distinctive dramatic botanical images Tennent is represented by galleries internationally and her work is part of many public and private collections including Biblioth que Nationale de France Paris The Mira Goddard Center for Photography at Ryerson University Toronto The Detroit Institute of Arts Kresge Art Foundation Detroit Riverfront Conservancy The Gap Doris Fisher Collection and the Chicago Botanic Garden She holds a BFA from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit With an acute sensitivity to today s persistent digital noise Tennent s collection of intimate portraits command attention by returning us to our most primitive and organic roots Isolating delicate living structures and amplifying them on a massive scale transports the viewer to a serene space where we are encouraged to breathe and to reconnect with the simple beauty of these objects 5
Doug Cannell Sculpture Doug Cannell is a sculptor whose works have been exhibited in museums and art galleries throughout the United States He was born in Detroit Michigan and now works from his studio in Highland Park Michigan an enclave of Detroit His sculpture is almost entirely abstract He began working predominantly in clay and then steel and more recently he often works in wood His work is distinguished by his use of contrasting materials textures and the juxtaposition of the organic and the industrial His sculpture is also informed by his work as a graphic designer a field in which he has also worked steadily 6
Kevin Grass Painting Grass began his formal education in art at Washington University in St Louis He received his Bachelor s degree in drawing and painting in 1990 He earned his Master of Fine Art degree at the University of Georgia Afterward Grass began teaching at Gordon College in Barnesville GA In August 1997 and Grass started teaching full time at St Petersburg College in Florida where he still works today Grass s current body of artwork centers on figurative pieces that comment upon social issues of today His paintings are found in museum corporate public and private collections throughout the United States and in Europe Grass exhibited at the Gerald R Ford Museum at ArtPrize in 2018 7
Dawn L Stringer Painting Dawn L Stringer is a self taught abstract artist from Oak Park MI She primarily paints with acrylic on canvas and wood Her technique involves pulling and scraping of the paint In 2017 Mrs Stringer was a Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series Finalist in which her piece Love Supreme was featured at Scope Miami and The Versace Mansion You can see more of her work at Kresge Headquarter in Troy MI and the Midtown location in Detroit MI the Legal Aid Office on Staten Island and the Awkaaba Gallery in Newark NJ Dawn resides in Oak Park MI and is currently curating a virtual abstract show for Rush Arts Philadelphia 8
Gail Mancuso Photography Award winning artist photographer Gail Mancuso captures the unique pulse silhouettes and re ections of the urban landscape the female form and pop culture With a discerning eye for color balance and composition she utilizes materials uncommon to traditional photography including paint torn papers glass and fabric along with digital imaging techniques to subtly blur the boundary between photography and painterly impressions Gail has received international recognition as the recipient of numerous photography awards including those in France Russia and Japan She has shown her work in both solo and group exhibitions in the US and worldwide including galleries in Chicago New York Venice Paris and Tokyo Beyond creating large scale art for public and corporate installations her limited edition works are held in the mayors offices in Chicago and San Francisco in the permanent collection at UIMA museum in Chicago as well as private collections throughout the US the UK and Italy 9

Andrea Bogart Painting In 2017 Andrea Bogart transitioned from full time artist and jewelry designer in New York to a Metro Detroit based startup founder through Embrace Creatives an online showroom where consumers and interior professionals can source art and design products crafted by business savvy artists She continues to experiment artistically with different mediums keeping up her skills and pushing her imagination Combining her passion for the human form with abstract concepts Bogart dances around our shared humanity and our natural curiosity Bogart has exhibited her paintings in Metro Detroit New York New Jersey Virginia and Pennsylvania and her work hangs in private collections 11
Dan McCrary Painting Dan McCrary has had an obsession with the automobile for as long as he can remember His earliest memories involve his dad s 47 53 and 56 Buicks and regular trips to the old Raleigh NC Speedway in the 1950s It was an era of color and exuberance in American car design which has remained with him to this day His variety of interests shows in the subjects he selects for his work With so many subjects available the one common thread that ties Dan s efforts together is his fascination with composition Whether it s rusting away in the woods or gleaming and re ecting at a Concours whether it s a hot rod or a Duesenberg what I love to do is to try and capture a combination of colors angles shapes lines a visual balance that works in an abstract way while at the same time being presented in a very realist fashion Dan said 12
Desiree Kelly Painting Desiree Kelly is an award winning Detroit artist She is known for her work as Detroit s premiere portrait painter Raised on the Eastside of Detroit she became inspired by the environment and developed a style of storytelling through portraits Her portraits of public icons are historically immersive and re ect on the narrative of her subjects She is known for her distinctive mixture of street art and traditional oil technique She won her first national award for Best Cover illustration with a painting of author Dan Savage In 2019 she was named by Crain s Detroit Business as a Twenty in Their 20s honoree which highlights outstanding young leaders in business making her the first Visual Artist in history named to the list She has been commissioned by The Washington Post The Ellen DeGeneres Show Converse Jack Daniels Pandora Kroger Pepsi Beaumont Health Atwater Brewery Footlocker INC PUMA and more 13
Link Wachler Jewelry Link Wachler is a Detroit custom jewelry artist Link s industry niche is specializing in independent personalized jewelry design It s the pure feel good and meaningful part of the jewelry business It s driven by the desire to create for the individual while helping them express themselves An alumnus of the College of Creative Studies in Detroit he has earned over 40 National and International Designs Awards His custom creations have been sold throughout the world He has designed specialty pieces for CEO s Rock and Roll Hall of Famers media personalities movie stars and sports celebrities He has been married to his wife Jody since 1978 Together they have 4 grown children and 7 grandchildren 14
TROY MURRAY TYP Painting Troy Murray a k a TYP is a multidisciplinary artist based out of both Metro Detroit and Los Angeles He works in a variety of mediums typically blending painting with fabrication and 3 dimensional elements He specializes in what he calls alternative canvas where he uses 3 dimensional objects to create his substrate and paints subjects that correlate with them in order to bring a story to life in a unique way Beyond expressing his creativity he uses art as a charitable platform and a way to make an impact in the world whether it s through teaching art to children in countries across the globe or donating a portion of every piece of work he does to the Premier foundation based out of Greenville SC 15
Kelly O Neill Sculpture O Neill is a contemporary abstract artist who works with recycled metals clay and fused glass Her multi media sculptures start with one or two pieces of inspirational metal which form the idea Each shape contributes to the final form The exploration of the positive and negative space the composition and three dimensional process results in something unique and one of akind O Neill s mission is to express something beautiful using found items She includes ceramic vessels and fused glass to accentuate the form as an exclamation point of creative expression O Neill creative process is intuitive She rarely sketches and allows the found material to shape each piece O Neill believes that working on a predetermined result is less satisfying and usually results in a creative expression that is more pedestrian Her story is more about the form than a political or social message She finds peace and purpose in the process For now this is her journey 16
Armin Mersmann Drawing Armin Mersmann was born in Remscheid Germany in 1955 Along with his parents he immigrated to the United States in 1962 He grew up in an artistic environment and was greatly in uenced and tutored by his father Fritz a successful oil painter After six years of college Mersmann began a very successful stint as a portrait artist in Chicago IL Although commission work was financially rewarding he stopped doing it and soon found more interest in the fine arts work that at times is controversial but more satisfying conceptually Mersmann has taught Drawing the Creative Process iPhoneography Drawing Master Class and Advanced Critique at Manifest Gallery Cincinnati OH Atelier Art Studio Royal Oak MI the American Academy of Art Chicago IL the Colorado Academy of Art Boulder CO Northwood University Midland MI the Midland Center for the Arts Midland MI and countless workshops within the United States 17
Gwendolyn Roth Photography Gwendolyn Roth is a Michigan photographer whose award winning work has been exhibited extensively Primarily self taught her interest in photography sparked upon receiving her first point and shoot camera at age twelve She worked and saved and finally purchased her first serious 35mm camera several years later Gwendolyn grew up in an art inspired family attended Michigan State University and earned her undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture Gwendolyn s photography emphasizes fine art and healing art but she will photograph anything that catches her eye Lately she has discovered the joy of creating beautiful abstracts from already beautiful images she captured what she calls beauty within beauty Sometimes she has fun with the camera just for the sake of fun but she still strives for joyful and thoughtful results Some shots are painstakingly set up others are off the y She and her camera welcome all that is real and which is found everywhere never far away 18
Ned Mueller Painting Ned is a very accomplished and highly respected artist having been drawing and painting for over 65 years He has been designated as a Master Artist with both the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society He is a graduate of the prestigious Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles where as still a student he also taught drawing classes He has participated in many of the major invitational shows in the country including the Artists of America Show Great American Artist s Show National Academy of Western Art Oil Painters of America Laguna Plein Air Show Pastel Society of America The Autry Western Masters Show The Northwest Rendezvous Show and the annual Plein Air Painters of America Exhibition Ned has shown in some of the finest galleries in the country has won numerous awards He is a Signature member of the Oil Painters of America American Impressionist Society Plein Air Painters of America California Art Club Northwest Pastel Society Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists Northwest Rendezvous Group and the American Society of Marine Artists He teaches classes and workshops regionally nationally and internationally 19

Kenneth Hershenson Painting Kenneth Hershenson a native Detroiter is a self taught acrylic painter whose artistic approach is rooted in the twin disciplines of realism and illustration He is currently working on a series of acrylic paintings titled I DO Know Jack in which he is creating images utilizing the child s toy chrome jack and titled with a play on words The jacks are painted in unexpected settings and scales The series was voted in the Top 25 in the 2D category at ArtPrize 7 the world s largest art exhibition and competition His series also captured 1st Place in the 2015 MI Great Artist Competition sponsored by Oakland County Michigan and Park West Gallery His paintings have been published in 10 nationally distributed art books including The Best of Acrylic Painting series AcrylicWorks Kenneth is a member of the National Oil Acrylic Painters Society and the International Guild of Realism Kenneth is the creator and curator of Art4Gloves a Virtual Fine Art Gallery Sale 21

Thank you for visiting Art4Gloves a Virtual Art Gallery Sale It s not often that a human services nonprofit goes into the art business but COVID 19 has caused small nonprofits to reinvent how they achieve their missions Because of your and the artists generosity many children teens and adults in and near Detroit Michigan will have warm hands and hearts this winter 40 of the proceeds from the sales will purchase new warm pairs of mittens and gloves Due to COVID 19 our regional collection of 32 000 pairs will not occur this season and our annual Spring fundraiser had to be cancelled Art4Gloves is a new way for us to come together with the art community and to find solutions to the challenges we are facing as a small nonprofit serving a large need There are several people who have brought their amazing skills and talents to this event and we want to thank them The show s curator Ken Hershenson had the concept of Art4Gloves eight years ago as a way to bring artists together to help Detroit Ken a Detroiter is a nationally known artist and he also sits on the Mittens for Detroit board It was Ken s determination and skill that brought Art4Gloves into being Thank you Ken for figuring this out and for rallying the artists to come together to help The 18 artists who are exhibiting in Art4Gloves are nothing short of astonishing They come from six states and the pandemic has not been kind to artists When asked to participate in this sale their collective response was very enthusiastic We are grateful for their sharing their talent and beautiful work with us Our wonderful creative director designer Joell Leining Hart of IconicaArt com has done it again Year after year Joell has gone above and beyond all expectations helping us put our best digital social and print foot forward with her beautiful and creative design work David Agius MFD Board President does not quit He has incredible energy and enthusiasm for our mission and took this fundraiser as seriously as Ken did David is a realist and an optimist with a great sense of humor and kindness making him an incredible asset to MFD in so many ways The MFD Board of Directors is outstanding There has been great support for this event since it was first brought up as a way to help us deal with the pandemic Big shout outs to two board members in particular Courtney Rosenau for her generous assistance with contracts and agreements and Shelby Jones for her social media smarts and skills Thank you to all of the Board for sticking with us during this challenge We hope that you enjoy this virtual art gallery that you meet some new and exciting artists and that you know that you are purchasing with a purpose You are making a difference in Detroit Thank you so much Warmly Wendy Shepherd MFD Executive Director PO Box 721427 Berkley MI 48072 313 727 6336 www MittensForDetroit org info MittensForDetroit org facebook com MittensForDetroit Twitter Mittens4Detroit Mittens for Detroit Inc is a 501 c 3 organization
