Since 2003, much of the 26-kilometre stretch between Yoho National Park and Golden has been improved to a modern 4-lane standard. Summerere will be no daytime interruptions during the summer, other than momentary trac control for turning vehicles. Overnight, interruptions may range from 20 minute stoppages to 9-hour closures (10pm to 7am). Photo by Chris WheelerPhoto by HookéFall,Winter and Springere may be trac stoppages of up to 2 hours during the day and evening and closures of up to 9 hours overnight (10 pm to 7 am), except during the ski season when 2 hour closures are not permitted between 3 pm and 9 pm on Fridays or between 7 am and 9 pm on weekends. In addition, there may be multi-day 24-hour closures from April 1st to the end of May and from mid-September to the end of November, except for Easter, Victoria Day and anksgiving when the highway will be open.Extended closures will also require signicant advance notice. Historically, other Indigenous peoples also harvested, hunted, shed and settled seasonally within the area, including the Shuswap peoples who for centuries have travelled to and inhabited the Ktunaxa homelands. The Ktunaxa People - ʔaknuqⱡuk – Golden AreaBefore the Ktunaxa, it was the Spirit Animals that occupied the country. e Ktunaxa creation story speaks of the giant, Naⱡmuqȼ̓in, and a prophecy from the Creator that would ultimately create all the Human Beings in the world. Read the creation story at www.ktunaxa.org/who-we-are/creation-storye Ktunaxa language is unique to their homelands, not related to any other in the world. eir culture is embedded in the Ktunaxa language and teaches them who they are and where they come from through their stories and songs. In Ktunaxa, the word for the town of Golden is ʔaknuqⱡuk- a word that describes the color of the water as it runs down into the Columbia. It says it is muddy or silty making it look white. When the Ktunaxa lived and moved freely throughout their homelands, many Ktunaxa families lived along the upper Columbia River (Miȼ̓qaqas) from its headwaters through and including ʔaknuqⱡuk working the land and harvesting wild vegetation. Hunting trails extend throughout the area and tie in with several portage trails all the way north to Boat Encampment and connect with the trail over Athabasca Pass to Jasper House. e Ktunaxa utilized many resources here in ʔaknuqⱡuk and it was important as a “mustering point” connecting travelers from all directions, much as it still does today. Secwepemc Shuswap Nationse Secwepemc people lived harmoniously with the seasons and resources throughout the territory, referred to as ‘seasonal rounds’. ey developed an intricate system of travel corresponding with the seasons, as well as an important social and political system that governed their interactions with each other and the use of their traditional lands. ey entered their “winter homes” (pit house/kekulis) in November and would remain in that location throughout the winter. e salmon that were abundant in the Columbia river system were integral to the Secwepemc culture and identity. Fishing camps could be found along the Columbia River, mouths of Windermere and Columbia Lakes and they would remain there for large harvests of salmon to be divided amongst families, stored and prepared for long winter months and journeys. is way of life in traditional times, were planned for by the community to ensure everyone was cared for and had enough resources.e Shuswap and Ktunaxa people have intermarried for generations and many families are genetically linked. e two tribes have their own unique stories and languages, oral histories and culture.Metis Natione Metis are a Nation created through the arrival of the European people who were encouraged to nd wives among the indigenous people. With the expansion of the Canadian fur trade, indigenous peoples and Metis also came in order to secure furs for the Northwest and Hudson Bay Companies. e Métis people settled in the upper Columbia over 200 years ago. As the settlements grew, the Métis in the 1800s were not only guides and trappers but also business owners, community leaders, musicians, builders and family men and women. Two of the Morigeau children, Sophie and Baptiste opened Golden’s rst general store in 1881. Baptiste’s rst wife was Colette Kinbasket, daughter to the chief of the Shuswap tribe in Windermere. Aer the death of Colette, Baptise married erese Caie who was from the Ktunaxa tribe.Altogether, the indigenous peoples have played an integral part in forming the western provinces and the Columbia Valley as well as the town of Golden. For more information on our Indigenous Peoples and stories visit: www.tourismgolden.com/about/indigenous-peoplestourismgolden.com

14  SUBJECT GOES HERE@TOURISMGOLDENTHE GOLDEN JOURNEY14  THE GOLDEN JOURNEYA story of exploration, railways, rivers and forestsIn 1807, David ompson – renowned fur trader, surveyor and map-maker tasked by the North West Company to open up a trading route to the lucrative trading territories of the Pacic Northwest – rst crossed over the Rocky Mountains and traveled along the Blaeberry River to the future site of Golden. In search of the Columbia River and, ultimately, a passage to the Pacic Ocean, ompson’s travels took him to the junction of the legendary Columbia and Kicking Horse Rivers. e Palliser Expedition explored and surveyed western Canada between 1857 and 1860. Led by John Palliser, the expedition discovered a high mountain pass across the Continental Divide which later became the route of the main line constructed by Canadian Pacic Railway between Lake Louise and Field. e pass and river were named Kicking Horse when Sir James Hector, a naturalist, geologist and surgeon was kicked by his horse and was initially believed dead by the expedition members. In 1881 the CPR hired surveyor A.B. Rogers to nd a rail route through the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains, and in 1882 he found the pass now named for him. Rogers established a base camp for his survey crew led by a man named McMillan. Initially known as ‘McMillan’s Camp’, the settlement was the beginning of the town of Golden. By 1884 in response to a nearby lumber camp naming itself ‘Silver City’ the residents of McMillan’s Camp, decided not to be outdone and renamed the settlement ‘Golden City’.CPR completed the railway in 1885, which also paved the way for the Trans-Canada Highway, and Golden soon became a prominent stop on the line. e building of the CPR line, which required huge quantities of timber for railway ties, bridges, trestles, snowsheds, and buildings, was the catalyst for the growth of the forestry industry in Golden. For over a century, the CPR and the forestry industry have provided employment and well-being to the town.e Sikh community history runs deep in Golden and early settlers employed by the Columbia River Logging Company date back to the 1890s. ey were housed in company-built residences and carried out their religious ceremonies in a Gurdwara (temple) built on mill property. Located on what is now 13th Street South, e Gurdwara is reputed to be the rst Sikh temple in North America. Although the original Gurdwara and the company houses are gone, the Sikh community made and continues to make signicant contributions to the settlement and development of the town of Golden. tourismgolden.comtourismgolden.comSUBJECT GOES HERE  15SWISS GUIDESSWISS GUIDES  15tourismgolden.com“Since we can’t export the scenery, we shall import the tourists”The CPR recognized that many travellers through Golden would want to stay, explore and discover the incredible area for themselves. To this end, the CPR hired professional Swiss guides to assist in providing a safe connection to this compelling yet rugged landscape. In 1899, Eduard Feuz Sr. and Christian Haesler came to Canada from Switzerland to serve as mountain guides. In the early 20th century they were joined by brothers Ed, Ernst and Walter Feuz, Christian Haesler Jr. , Rudolf Aemmer and Christian Bohren, and others followed. Between 1899 and 1954, there were a total of 35 Swiss guides who not only provided the expertise for thousands of climbs and the safe ascents of many peaks in the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains surrounding Golden – with the admirable record of having not a single fatality - but also became tourist attractions in their own right.Recognising that working in Canada whilst their families remained in Switzerland was not at all ideal, the CPR management constructed permanent homes for the Swiss Guides and their families and in 1912, the Edelweiss Village was complete with six chalets which became the homes of the second generation of guides and their families. e homes still exist today and thanks to the family of Walter Feuz are preserved along with memorabilia and stories from that time.Golden’s Swiss Guides; yesterday and today.Syd Feuz was the rst Canadian-Swiss Guide. e son of Walter Feuz, he was born in 1922, raised in the Edelweiss Village and lived many years in Golden. Working not only as a mountain and heli-ski guide, Syd had many other jobs and also ran other businesses with his wife Baeda, making them an integral part of the Golden community. Feuz Bowl at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is named for Syd and his family and in 2010 he was honoured by the community to carry the Olympic Torch into Golden as it passed on its journey across Canada.Rudi Gertsch is a second generation Swiss Mountain Guide, talented skier and climber. Arriving in Western Canada in his early twenties, he began working as a climbing guide then as a heli-ski guide and occasional movie stunt double. In 1974 he started Purcell Heli-skiing. Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014, Rudi and his son Je continue to operate this successful family business in Golden. A founding member of Heli-Cat Canada, Rudi still plays an integral role in the heli-skiing and mountain guiding industry in Western Canada. “IT’S STILL THE BEST PLACE, RIGHT HERE IN GOLDEN…YOU CAN’T BEAT IT”SYD FEUZ*Credits: R.W.
