CORNELL HILLEL 2019 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
Rarely has a year been so divided between a before and after For most of this past year our programs unfolded along familiar coordinates as we engaged over 1 000 Jewish Cornellians in meaningful Jewish experiences We sent students to Israel to experience the promise of the Jewish state our Jewish Learning Fellowship and other programs that inspire students to encounter big Jewish ideas continued to grow we celebrated Jewish holidays and beautiful Shabbats together and we launched the Conflict Conversation Series bringing together Israelis and Palestinians in an effort to educate the campus on the Israel Palestine Conflict and model how to have respectful conversation across difference We accomplished all of this before Covid19 upended our lives and canceled in person instruction Afterward we knew that supporting our students also meant being present for their whole selves in addition to their Jewish identities As we reached out to Jewish students in the early days of the pandemic we encountered students anxiety as we all faced uncertainty for the future Program wise we ve shifted from the power of in person community to a virtual one and we ve imagined a new way to connect with students that prioritizes pastoral support for students that are grieving We would not be able to do this important work and create a flourishing Jewish community at Cornell without the imagination passion and investment of all our stakeholders I would like to thank our talented student leaders and staff who create inspired programs and our Hillel Board of Trustees whose wisdom and experience have helped us chart a course through the uncertainty of Covid 19 I would also like to thank all of our generous supporters Without your deep investment in Jewish student life our work would not be possible Rabbi Ari Weiss Executive Director As we embark on our sixth and final year as Co Chairs of the Cornell Hillel Board of Trustees we look back on the past year with amazement Fall 2019 began with the unprecedented expansion of our footprint on campus establishing a Base Hillel in Collegetown offering a new vibrant space for progressive and previously unaffiliated Jews on campus The academic year ended with our staff and students navigating the uncharted waters brought on by the coronavirus pandemic pivoting seamlessly to a remote paradigm for Jewish engagement We sincerely thank our donors for your generous support through these turbulent times To our staff who are always resilient in adapting to the ever changing landscape of the Cornell campus we say a huge kol h akavod for remaining strong and present virtually and on social media as our students dispersed far from campus this spring To Ari who continues to captain our ship with wisdom creativity and integrity we express our gratitude And to our students who have adapted to this unfortunate new reality and have risen in support of justice you rock We embrace the long held traditions and values of our Jewish community in our support for your opposition of inequality in our society and defense of the legitimacy of the State of Israel We are hopeful that when you read this the plans being made to return to the Cornell campus are well underway and successful While many things will be different on campus we are confident that our staff will be ready as always to provide meaningful opportunities for Jewish engagement to all of our students in whatever form that may take Thank you for your support in these challenging times Onward and upward Eric Alderman 81 Elena Lefkowitz 88 Co Chairs Cornell Hillel Board of Trustees 1
HILLEL IMPACT REPORT 1 379 JEWISH STUDENTS ENGAGED 3 408 SHABBAT MEALS 115 STUDENTS TRAVELED TO ISRAEL 12 787 CUMULATIVE JEWISH EXPERIENCES STUDENT STORY When the Hillel staff initially reached out to me I thought of not responding I was afraid of being expected to be more observant than I felt comfortable with which could not be further from the truth Honestly I always shied away from Judaism because I think my mother having grown up in a secular Muslim country wasn t really proud of it either This was the classic story of soviet Jews they were sort of shy of their Judaism and I think she brought that over here Growing up in Borough Park I felt like I wasn t Jewish because the Jews I would see didn t look like me They were dressed in all black with big fur hats I thought I m not that so I must not be Jewish I m not Christian so I guess I m just in the middle in some sort of murky waters I didn t really want to explore that part of my identity before I gave Hillel a try The strength or beauty of Hillel is that it is this network of different Jews of all different backgrounds and there is no one Jew fits all type of thing where you have to be religious or you have to be observant to fit in It s a place for anyone who s tangentially Jewish maybe who does not even identify as Jewish who wants to explore that identity A place where anyone can come and learn more about the faith and they can feel comfortable in the fact that they re not a Hasidic Jew and still feel like they re being a good Jew Which was big for me Jonathan Davydov Junior 2
LEADERSHIP For young Jews coming to campus can feel isolating and lonely Having a community is a powerful feeling Hillel s ability is to be there for students from that first year and become a platform for each student to develop their own capacity as a leader and a learner With Hillel students have the ability to selfauthor their Jewish experience Growing up mixed made it difficult to belong Throughout my life while attending Jewish activities and events many people thought I was the non Jewish person tagging along with my Jewish friends As I readied for college I did not expect anything different Within just a few days I realized I could not have been more wrong Cornell Hillel welcomed me with open arms Through my involvement with Hillel I have made amazing friendships explored my Judaism and found a home away from home As Hillel President I get to work closely with the ten other members of our Student Executive Board and collaborate with dozens of diverse Jewish student leaders throughout our Hillel community Together we foster a welcoming and supportive community for all Jewish students Cornell Hillel President Avi Kupperman Junior Members of Hillel s 2020 Student Executive Board 3
HILLEL AT HOME Once Cornell University announced that campus would close Hillel was quick to adapt to virtual programming immediately providing ways for students to engage with each other and continuing weekly programs like our Jewish Learning Fellowship Our staff also reached out to over 1 000 individual students to remind them that we are here for them and that we are all in this together We watched movies played games checked in with elderly alumni celebrated holidays pursued racial justice and learned together all from the safety of our own homes We took the promise of a Hillel without walls seriously and worked tirelessly to make good on those promises In these difficult weeks away from campus and my friends Hillel s staff and online programming have helped me stay connected Despite being away from school and living without in person experiences Hillel has helped me stay in touch with my peers and have virtual Jewish community experiences Raphy Gendler Junior Creating and Praying Together Rabbi Hayley and Lizzie created consistent interactive online programming out of Base Ithaca such as yoga sessions Jewish cooking classes and art workshops culminating in a weekly musical Kabbalat Shabbat service and Havdallah
BASE ITHACA In August Rabbi Hayley Goldstein and her partner Lizzie Sivitz moved into the new Base Ithaca home in Collegetown Base is a Hillel initiative and movement to provide a home based pluralistic Jewish family environment for students Base Ithaca is a Jewish community experience that provides musical Shabbat services delicious home cooked Shabbat dinners and weekly Jewish learning programs that range from Tacos and Torah study to sofrut Hebrew calligraphy and art classes led by both Rabbi Hayley and Lizzie Base Ithaca provides more welcoming Jewish spaces at Cornell and has allowed students of all backgrounds who may have been intimidated by the size and scope of Hillel programming to find a point of entry on their own terms Rabbi Hayley and Lizzie have also run a number of programs for the Queer community and allies such as a virtual Queer Seder and a Queer Talmud fellowship As the only female and liberal rabbi on campus Hayley has broken barriers and broadened Cornell Hillel s scope immensely allowing us to provide meaningful Jewish experiences to everyone 430 students participated in Base programs this year The Base Ithaca Sukkah was an extraordinary addition to this year s High Holiday season Lizzie a talented artist along with some of our artistic students designed and decorated this gorgeous Sukkah Students were invited to eat learn and celebrate the joyous holiday 5
Base Student Story I thought from a young age that Judaism was something I needed to be ashamed of I literally never wanted to be a part of anything Jewish in my whole life I stopped going to Hebrew School in the second grade because I told my parents I hated it I never willingly stepped into a Jewish space until Base Ithaca I saw their post on social media and I just felt like it was something that would make me feel at home And it was It feels like I m putting down something really heavy I pulled back this curtain on this big cavern inside of my body that I didn t even know was there and there s so much work to be done in that very sensitive spot of my soul It feels simultaneously that I have my work cut out for me but also a relief I feel like I m coming into my own I went to Shabbat dinner on campus a couple of times Freshman and Sophomore year and I just felt that everyone there knew each other Everyone there was welcoming and warm but some part of me didn t feel like I belonged there The moment I walked into Base Ithaca I just felt completely at peace I just felt so warm and definitely a part of that is because it is a queer safe space I could just show up with every part of me instead of leaving some of my stuff at the door I knew that every part of me was allowed to be who I was truly deeply in that space I think that through feeling that safety I had this emotional foundation that I can t really put into words It was a very abstract feeling I have a safe place in Judaism Somewhere in my body somewhere in this world there is a place for me Still having that foundation I felt like I could launch off on these thoughts that were painful and hard to have There s somewhere for me to land Lindsay Borman Senior 6
JEWISH VALUES Learning Tikkun Olam In November Hillel took its commitment to Tikkun Olam on the road when a delegation of 5 students traveled with our Assistant Director to the Southern Border in San Diego The delegation consisted of Jewish students Latinx students and a Latinx Jewish student The group spent their time with local migrant communities volunteered at NGOs and met members of the Mexican Jewish community in California Our students gained invaluable insight into the national refugee crisis With Hillel these students were able to approach the issue through a Jewish lens and understand more about the Jewish advocacy effort towards supporting migrants 7 One of our favorite initiatives the Jewish Learning Fellowship concluded another successful year and two unique semesters The Fall semester saw the return of our three JLF tracks taught by rabbis and educators on staff Our students learned about Social Justice asked Life s Big Questions and discussed Sex Love and Romance through a Jewish lens Second semester we introduced a fourth track a Queer JLF for members of the LGBTQ community taught by Base Ithaca s Rabbi Hayley Like many of our other initiatives JLF was adapted to be an online program at the onset of Covid 19 Students appreciated the sense of normalcy that came with their weekly JLF cohort meetings
BUILDING COMMUNITY Freshmen Feature Cornell Hillel hosted 52 freshmen for our pre orientation event First Year Fest an overnight experience at the Hoffman Challenge Course Our staff student leaders and Hillel Orientation Team bonded with the new students over the low ropes course an evening bonfire and interactive icebreakers More new students and their families joined us the next day back on campus for a big orientation Shabbat dinner Even our overflow room was full We were overjoyed to welcome the Class of 2023 warmly into the Cornell Hillel community We hosted programs throughout the semester to ensure new students had opportunities to meet their Jewish peers and find their home away from home at Hillel First Year Fest Family Weekend Brunch In February 25 freshmen baked delicious and unique challot in the kitchen of a dorm Later that month following a large snowstorm freshmen gathered in a dining hall on North Campus for a special Shabbat where they laughed about sledding on Libe Slope while eating challah drinking grape juice and celebrating Shabbat with their friends 8
HOLIDAYS Ringing in the Jewish New Year We started the year with an awesome line up of High Holiday programs From a massive Rosh Hashanah dinner to a carnival array of activities on Ho Plaza and an extraordinary musical service led by Rabbi Hayley it was clear that 5780 was off to a great start Followed by the stunning Base Sukkah and a Simchat Torah dance party the fall semester was filled with joyous celebration Shabbat Holiday Meals In addition to Hillel s large weekly Shabbat dinner Shabbat at Base Ithaca and our many other special holiday and Shabbat meals Shabbat Across Cornell thrived this year and the popular program was expanded to sponsor Jewish holiday meals as well Through SAC Hillel provides funding and resources that empower students to host Shabbat and holiday meals in their dorms apartments and Greek houses This year SAC enabled students to host nearly 100 meals for their friends from themed Shabbat dinners to Yom Kippur break fasts serving 635 students Hosting Shabbat meals is just about my favorite thing and it s all thanks to Shabbat Across Cornell There s no better way to be with my friends while being my full authentic and Jewish self Rafi Jacobovitz Senior 9
Celebrating Purim We were lucky to celebrate one last time together before the sudden campus closure with multiple Magillah readings Hamantashen bakes and a spectacular Purim carnival in Willard Straight Hall which boasted intricate balloon creations and mishloach manot care packages for refugees recently relocated to upstate New York Holidays Apart Passover was the first time we celebrated together as a dispersed community after campus closed For those students isolating in Ithaca Hillel provided 50 Seder kits of all the necessities to make the holiday less stressful in addition to many virtual offerings Finally we celebrated Yom Ha atzmaut Israel Independence Day by hearing from four of Cornell Hillel s past and present Israel Fellows and sharing on social media thoughts from our students about why Israel is special to them Although we celebrated from a far this year we gathered as a community in spirit 10
ISRAEL Travel to Israel 65 Jewish Cornellians spent their summer in Israel through our Big Red Birthright trip and Cornell Hillel Onward Israel Internship Program and nearly 50 Cornell students traveled to Israel with us this winter through Birthright and our annual Perspectives Israel trip Perspectives is an educational interfaith trip for student leaders on campus and views Israel through a multifaceted lens The students who traveled to Israel with Cornell Hillel this winter were immersed in the country s history beauty culture and complexities through rich first hand experiences Big Red Birthright Conflict Conversation Series After launching the series this fall Cornell Hillel welcomed thought leader and author of A Letter to My Palestinian Neighbor Yossi Klein Halevi and coexecutive director of The Abraham Fund Mohamad Darawshe for a conversation between a Jewish Israeli and an Arab Israeli who shared their complementary narratives about their attachment to the land of Israel Perspectives Trip Israel Learning Fellowship 11 During ILF this semester I had the opportunity to explore the unique contributions of various Jewish immigrant communities to the Israeli identity It was interesting learning about the melting pot that Israel has become and this class has expanded my view on Israeli identity I enjoyed how Hillel s Assistant Director Oded and Israel Fellow Omer structured this class By the end I felt that I better understood the history of Israel could engage more thoughtfully with others about current politics in Israel and could begin imagining what Israel may look like in the future I think every Jew should have the opportunity to engage in discussions about Israel and the sort of country we imagine it to be and I thank ILF for giving me the space to do so Aiden Kolodziej Junior
MAJOR SPEAKERS This year we welcomed two incredible major speakers to Cornell In the Fall we heard from celebrity chef Duff Goldman Duff spoke about his career and his connection to Judaism for a room of over 200 students faculty and community members in Uris Hall The talk was followed by an audience Q A with question topics ranging from the most challenging cake Duff has made to dealing with anti Semitism as a celebrity chef Duff spoke about growing up in a Jewish household and how he became interested in baking In January former Saturday Night Live cast member Vanessa Bayer spoke to over 700 audience members about the many roles that she played on SNL She spoke about her famous character Jacob the BarMitzvah Boy who performs a rehearsed speech with cheesy jokes Bayer also spoke about the power of Jewish humor When discussing the use of her Jewish cultural identity in her comedy Bayer stated it s a way of relating to people who are Jewish and not the cultural part of it has really influenced my life and my comedy so much I m very grateful for that 12
