PARKS RECRE Get Outside Balyeat Field Rogers Park 152 N State St Sparta Rogers Park is a spacious 4 acre park dedicated in tribute to William Rogers a longstanding resident and businessman in Sparta This park hosts a beautiful community band shell playground pavilion volleyball nets and winding paved trail along the trickling Nash Creek This park is a popular venue for weddings concerts reunions and family picnics throughout the year Thanks to grant acquisitions the Village of Sparta is investing in Rogers Park and adding a Splash Pad Construction is scheduled for Spring 2017 10 190 Olmstead Sparta Balyeat Field named after 0 E Balyeat a longtime and beloved Superintendent of Sparta Area Schools is home to two soccer fields Sparta Town Country Day Fairgrounds and the volunteer operated Ice Skate Rink in the winter Library Park 80 N Union St Sparta A quiet pathway that winds around the Sparta Library connecting Balyeat Field and Rogers Park A beautiful gazebo is the perfect place to stop to rest or enjoy overlooking the soccer fields nearby The Garden Club of Sparta planted the original plants in memory of the souls lost during September 11 2001 www facebook com Sparta Michigan

History of Sparta he first settlers arrived in the Sparta area in 1844 to Tutilize the rich land and abundant streams The Township of Sparta was formally organized in 1846 the year Jonathan Nash the founder of Sparta came to the area He first called the settlement Nashville and built a sawmill on Lick Creek whose name was changed to Nash Creek As there already was a Nashville in Michigan the state legislature suggested the name Sparta Mr Nash was the first postmaster and the first village president He had the village platted in 1867 Sparta was finally incorporated as a village in 1883 The first railroad to reach Sparta was the north south Grand Rapids Newaygo and Lake Shore Railroad in 1872 Farmers brought cattle and hogs to stockyards along this track to be shipped to Chicago slaughterhouses The first east west railroad the Toledo Saginaw and Muskegon came through in 1888 Its station is now the Railroad Museum and listed on the State Register of Historical Sites The railroads contributed a great deal to the progress and prosperity of the Village of Sparta and to Sparta Township The fertile land in the area attracted more and more settlers most of whom were farmers In 1873 the principle products were wheat corn and other grains potatoes hay wool and maple sugar with fruit and vegetables playing a minor role in area farming Dairy farming became and still is a major agricultural activity in the area By the turn of the last century many German and Swedish immigrants were farming in the area They turned to growing fruit mainly apples and peaches In the early part of the century fruit was hauled by horse and wagon to Grand Rapids markets Looking for more history of Sparta documents Visit www spartahistory org 24 www facebook com Sparta Michigan
