I SCORE PRIMM 300 Herbst Takes overall By Judy Smith Photos Trackside Photo Craig Turner had to adjust his suspension on the first lap but then had no problems at all and took the win in Class 7 Cory Susag and Doug Siewert led the big pack of Class 7A trucks to the finish line taking the win in their Chevrolet by 11 minutes Troy Herbst drove his Smithbuilt Class 1 Ford powered Truggy to first place in the overall standings at the SCORE Primm 300 in September A somber mood prevailed as racers gathered for the event just four days after the World Trade Center tragedy While many sporting events were canceled or delayed the PrimnY300 which didn t fit the parameters of those that were put off went on as planned Since the race would not be filling up a huge stadium and thus creating a target it was not considered unsafe And since n lost of the co1npetitors and others involved in the event could get there without using conunercial airlines another reason just did not pply Many tea1ns arrived with American flags flying from their tow vehicles and race cars and SCORE handed out small flags to fly from the race vehicles also They also planned to set up a blood donor station during contingency but the team that would have co1ne was so busy taking donations in town that they couldn t get to Pri1nm A 1no1nent of silence the national anthem and the playing of taps just before the start reduced many folks to tears but then it was time for a deep breath and 1noving forward The tace course nowadays determined by the BLM was the same as in previous years That means it meandered northward to a poiI lt about 10 or 12 miles north of Jean near what used to be called Sloan turning into the hills for a bit but spending a lot of time on the dusty dry lake It totaled just a sliver less than 70 miles and most classes ran four laps Classes 3 3i 11 9 Stock Full and Stock Mini all elected to run only three laps There was an 11 hour time limit and that was none too long for so1ne The course see1ned fast at first look but as the great clouds of dust billowed up it soon beca1ne a 1natter of self preservation to slow down drastically There were plenty of booby traps in the fonn of rocks and as always the threat of running up too fast on a disabled or limping vehicle that was hidden in the dust In order to get the full field of 138 entries off the line before the fast cars came around again SCORE started only seven classes 30 seconds apart the balance went off the line into the dust or i ly 15 seconds behind one another Not long after classes took off spectators watched in horror as a spiraling plume of black smoke rose above the dust Somehow the Class 1 car of Ryan Stewart had caught fire Even with the help of the water truck which was in the area the flames were tough to douse and the car was a total loss though we re happy to report that there were no injuries In the rneantitne Dave Ashley was enjoying a dust free first lap in his Ford Trophy Truck He d been first off the line and was now talking to himself reminding himself co be patient and careful He and codriver Dan Smith had talked a lot about the dangers of running into another vehicle on this dusty course At the end of the first lap Ashley had the lead but he had only three seconds on Brian Collins in his three seater Chevy truck Ashley s time at 1 10 59 was the quickest for this class Tim Herbst in a Ford and newly lettered with the slogan God Bless America in big letters on both sides ran third another two minutes back They represented the entire Trophy Truck entry On the second lap as they caught up with the slow classes all their lap times slowed and Herbst moved Ernie Negrete and Gerardo lribe paired up to win the 5 1600 class with a very steady drive and no problems to slow them down into the lead but he had just 41 seconds on Ashley while Collins having flat tires fell to third another five and ahalf minutes back Smith took over for Ashley on the third lap ana he found it a tense situation to be watching for the slower cars Nevertheless he was back in the lead at the end of the lap and moving a little quicker as traffic thinned so1ne and a breeze picked up Now he had ten 1ninutes on Collins who was second while the Herbsts worked frantically to replace a transmission and front differential on their truck Smith ran another steady lap having no trouble at all an cl the Duralast team got their win finishing 19 minutes in front of Collins who had lost all his passenger side glass from driving on flats The Herbst truck showed up nearly three hours later third reporting four flat tires in addition to all their other problems but still getting a finish The Class 1 cars were next to go with a starting field of 28 cars In addition to Ryan Stewart Brian Brown Tim Rockenbach and Jimmy Nuckles in Josh Waddell s car all failed to get through the first lap But of those stiH moving the lead belonged to Jeff Darland in his Jimco He had 21 seconds on Doug Fortin Jr with a V4 powered J imco who was tied exactly with Chuck Hovey in ar iother V4 powered Jimco In fourth place it was Ronny Wilson in still another V 4 powered Jimco only 36 seconds behind him And in fifth it was John Marking in the Steve Sourapas Jimco now with the big 35 tires on the front and a reworked suspension and being pushed by a V6 Chevy On the second lap they lost Kory Scheeler who had a new V6 Chevy in his J imco and Dale Dondel in the Nye Frank with another six cylinder Chevy and Gary Weyhrich in a big motor Chenowth who ran up on a slower car unseen in the dust til too late and had a bad crash Again no serious injuries but the car was finished And the lead changed on Continued on page 1D Craig Stewart and Mark Newhan drove their Ford Ranger to third Ronny Wilson and Lee Pat ten teamed to drive their V4 powered Jimco Richard Wizman led Class B for two laps but then rolled the truck and place in Class 7S which enjoyed an entry of 21 trucks for this event to third place in George Seeley drove a 11 the way in his New Beetle Baja Bug and even without third gear he took the win in Class 5 the second lap as Troy Herbst who started 21st in the lineup began to 1nove up as the dust thinned a bit and now he had two and ahalf minutes on Bob Lofton in still another V6 Chevy powered Jimco Hovey ran third now 26 seconds later followed by Ronny Wilson and then Darland Herbst had a flat on each of his laps so far but the others were reporting no trouble Eric Solorzano and Ramon Peyreya teamed up in Solorzano s car to take the victory in Class 11 with no problems at all The third lap saw the demise of Buddy Feldkamp Steve Kuker and John Gaughan Well it wasn t Gaughan himself but Curt LeDuc driving a buggy for the first time and really en joying it until a rear arm broke the wheel took off and he coasted to a stop almost in front of the Buffalo Bill s grandstands Herbst had another flat or two but continued to hold the lead and was now just under three 1ninutes in front of Mike Julson who d taken over for Lofton Wilson s codriver Lee Patten was now third Fortin was fourth and he d had a flat and had to drive on it for about five miles In fifth it was Darland who was regretting that he didn t have a codriver He was getting tired He also had a smaller fuel tank than some of the other folks and had to stop two times to fuel where most of the others stopped only once Hovey got a flat changed it himself and then had another before he could pick up a new spare He ran on the second flat got the tire tangled up in the c v boot and had to have the boot taped up when he finally stopped He lost about 40 minutes Continued on page 13 I I I I I t Rich Severson brought an old Jeep Cherokee out to do battle had a Mike Coleman and Steve 01 iges were part of the big crowd of 7S trucks lot of fun but missed the official cut off time by about 15 minutes racing at Primm and their Ford crossed the finish line in second place Brian Coneen and Tim Lawrence paired up in their Jimco and in spite of brake problems managed a great third place in SCORE Lite I I An Intimate Gem Adjacent to Bellagio Caesars Bally s Ask About Our Special Headliner Show and A Room Packages _ _ __ _ __ __D _ tr Flamingo The Strip West Tropicana Arville 1 888 227 2279 1 800 675 3267 barbarycoastcasino com The Place Las Vegans Call Home orleanscasino com Ask About Our Room Golf Packages 0 l TI _r West Flamingo Valley View Alta Rampart 1 888 402 6278 1 877 677 7111 goldcoastcasino com Page 10 November 2001 suncoastcasino com Dusty Times

Herbst had still another flat but in the drastically thinned traffic he recorded the fast lap time for the day at 1 10 01 and cinched his win Troy s car also sported the big God Bless America slogan on both sides He said there d been lots of silt and dust and he d had at least one flat every lap He finished four minutes and 33 seconds in front of Julson who was re1ne1nbering the Baja 500 on the last lap when he d been catching Herbst and hit a rock that ruined his day This time he was a bit more careful and it paid off with second place for him and Lofton However there was a severely bent front arm that was the result of a meeting with the back end of a small truck Ronny Wilson and Lee Patten finished third reporting that they d lost a header pipe on the last lap but hadn t bothered to stop or do anything about it In fourth it was Fortin who said he d been in traffic all day long and a beat Darland finished fifth Jeff Quinn with a five and ahalf hour last lap was the last finisher in the class and he had an interesting story The upper rear corner of his chassis had let go and a piece of tubing still attached to his rear shock had popped through his netting and s1nacked him in the back of his helmet Jeff got out of the car and went to have the medics check him out wh de his passenger Gary Stuivenga mexicaneered a way to hol d it all together and then h e climbed into the driver s seat and went on His repair broke so he found a log about three inches in diameter and two feet long jammed it up against the r e ar down bar and tied the flopping shock and mount to it It held for the rest of the Marc Stein ran his Ford F 150 in the Stock Full class which did only three laps and took home the first place trophy day though it was a very slow trip since there was essentially no suspension on that corner Jeff pronounced healthy by the medics got back in to get the finish Class 8 started next There were four entries and the best looking truck the black Chevy of Richard Wizeman was the first one around the loop leading by just under a 1ninute In second place it was Jesse Jones in his Chevy and he had a little over seven minutes on Nick Vanderwey in still another Chevy About 20 minutes back it was Dennis McCarthy from Burbank in fourth Wize1nan continued to lead through the second lap and now he had a ha lf hour on Vanderwey who d lost about 25 minutes Jones was third another 40 minutes down struggling with that he initiaiiy thought was a fuel pickup problem but ultimately discovered to be the resu It of a disintegrating fuel cell All his fuel lines fuel filters and fuel pumps were clogged with strands of the stuff McCarthy was still running but lost over two hours on this lap with some disaster Wizeman was lucky to be in front of the group at this point because at about 10 miles out from the start finish area he d rolled his truck at high speed He d got it back on its wheels somehow and came on in but as he went over the grandstand jump his front sheet metal all gone and the rest of it crumpled and bent a spurt of flame appeared He pulled off the course in the area that would be the finish interview spa c e and someone hustled him a fire extinguisher so the fla1ne was quickly out But Wizeman had no desire to get back in the truck and try to finish He d had enough even though the end of his third lap was only a hundred yards away And the idea of trying to go for the final lap didn t interest him at all Vanderwey was back up to normal speed on this third lap and he took over the lead while Jones was really hustling and recorded the fast lap for the class at l 7 39 and ran second about 30 minutes back He was having trouble with flat tires as well as his fuel line struggle And one of his electronic ignitions went bad losing him a lot of time before he figured out what it was But Vanderwey didn t Scott Steinberger led all the way with his Ford Protruck had no trouble at all and took the win by over an hour have things his way either and he broke a centerlink same thing that broke in the Baja 500 and lost an hm tr with repairs J01 ies struggled on his radio not working so he didn t know what the others were doing and then the worst thing of all happened Somehow with all the climbing in and out of the truck to make repairs he lost his external catheter but he didn t realize it Thus when he felt a call of nature and emptied his bladder he was horrified to realize he d peed in his pants After a fourth lap that lasted over two hours he pulled in to_the finish discouraged and spent to learn that he had the win Vanderwey finished about 13 ri1inutes later in second place McCarthy never got there The Protruck Super Sport class was next off the line with four entries They were lucky to have that many as Richard Hoffman who hails from Chicago had his flight plans changed drastically by the attack on the World Trade Center At the end of the first lap Scott Steinberger had his Ford in the lead and he was about ei_ght 1ninutes in front of Hoffman in his Chevrolet Ryan Herzog and Grayson Smith in a Ford were havirig rear suspension trouble and they ran third while Alan Pflueger in a new Chevy lost over an hour Steinberger recorded the fast lap for this class at 1 24 04 on the second lap and built his lead to 3 7 minutes Herzog and Smith ran second with Hoffman in third another 40 minutes down He d hit a stopped race car and flattened a tire Pflueger was another 15 minutes behind him Steinberger was having what he called an easy day the most exciting thing occurring when he came up on a traffic jam and had to blaze a trail around the jam up By the end of the third lap he had nearly an hour on Herzog nd Smith who were having flat tire problems Pflueger had an over four hour third lap but was still moving Steinberger took the win by an hour and 10 minutes with four very consistent lap ti1nes Herzog and S1nith who had five flats in addition to their suspension woes took second They Continued on page 14 Jeff Darland soloed the race in his Class 1 Jimco and thought it was Steve Croll had a good day going in his Chenowth and led Class 1O Darren York drove with Joe Custer in their Ford and led the 7S troops a lot of work He finished Jimco and thought it was a lot of work He for two laps but a broken axle put him out on the last lap for two laps but problems on the third lap put them out of the running finished the day in fifth place Mike Cohen teamed with his future father in law Tom Schilling in a Daniel arid Andrew Myers had a scare when their car quit on the last Ernesto Cervantes had the fast lap for Class 7 in his Ranger but a Jimco and the pair had a good day finishing second in the SCORE lap but otherwise their day went well and they brought the Jimco rollover Dave Ashley and Dan Smith played it cool tried hard to stay out of trouble in the dust and took the Trophy Truck win with their Ford were followed in by Hoffman who broke a pitman arm late in the race Pflueger finished fourth five hours behind Steinberger In Class 10 there were 20 entries and Louis Grivas Eli Yee and Mike Sandoval were out of the race before Lap 1 was completed Sean Sessa reportedly had enough trouble for two laps first having a wheel fall off and then losing his _motor Steve Croll however had his Chenowth in the lead with two minutes on Chris Harrold in his Honda powered J imco Richard Beck was third in his Jimco and Mark Hutchins another Jimco was fourth In fifth it w a s Dan Myers in a Toyota powered Jimco He was fiveand a half minutes behind the lead car Following the Protruck and Class 8 trucks as they were these drivers had lots of dust to contend with right from the start Croll was in command for another lap and led by just under three 1ninutes at the end of Lap 2 But another group had fallen out including Hutchins who lost his motor Mike Williams B J Baldwin Jason Huriter and 1nartin Christensen who was blowing white smoke and decided to quit before it grenaded Harrold was still in second place but he was having a problem with a trick new switch that was intended to turn t he car off if the oil pressure got too low It was acting up and he had to bypass it Shane Brown was l e ss than a Cisco Bio and Sergio Gutierrez drove the Tubular Designs car to first place in Class 9 reporting no problems at all on the very tough course minute behind him in third in his Jimco and Ben Schlimme ran fourth in Danny Anderson s Jimco another 18 seconds back He d had a flat that he d had to fix himself In fifth if was still Myers having a trouble free run just another 13 secands back Harrold recorded the class fast lap on the third loop at 1 18 38 and went into the lead with just about three minutes on Croll Anderson who d replaced Schlimme was now third and Beck was fourth about seven minutes later He was driving a SCORE Lite car in this class apparently in order to take advantage of a s ide bet put together by some of the competitors In fifth place it was the Myers car with brother Andrew at the wheel Somewhere along the way Harrold bent a tie rod but he still led Then he had a flat and had to change it himself on the last lap On the radio he heard that Anderson was very close so he pushed really hard the rest of the way And he got the win by two minutes and 42 seconds Sc hlimme and Anderson who had no problems at all were second 20 minutes in front of the third place Myers team who d had a big scare on the last lap Up to that point their day had been trouble free but then Andrew s knee hit the battery switch and turned the c ar off It didn t take long to figur e o ut what had happened but the ca r didn t want to restart for a long tim e a nd h e w as a fr a id h e s los t a pos ition But t h ey h ad m o ved in to t h ird f inis hing s ix m i nut es in front of t h e four t h pl ace car Th at was drive n by N e il Klein e an exd r ag boa t r a cer wh o says th at o ff r oa d racing is c u s hy a nd 1nuc h sa fe r co1npare d to d rag b oats Hi s four t h place was a nice finish for soineone driving only hi s third race In fifth it was Toby Gaerin in another Jimco about 14 minutes later C roll after starting out so well broke an axle on the last lap Shane Brown who dropped out on the third lap also apparently broke an axle Rick Ellison and John Penner had a mixed day in their Chenowth They broke an upper control arm on the first lap and lost about an hour then had a flat on the second lap On Lap 3 with Penner now in the car things ran pretty well but then on Lap 4 he had a flat John had to change it himself and as he was putting on the spare he happened to notice that his fuel pressure regulator wasn t 1nounted properly and was just hanging by the hoses He got back in the car and went on only to have the wheel and tire come off and go bounding across the desert He had to run 100 yards to get it back It seems he wasn t focused on the tire b e c a use he d been distrac t e d by that fuel regula Eibach Springs is proud to announce it s complete line or ultra high qualitv off road springs Available in 10 12 14 16 inch free lengths with 3 ID Awell designed manufactured spring will last thousands of cvcles even in the cruelest desert environments That s whv top chassis builder Mike Julson chooses Eibach Springs He knows what it takes to win Now so do VDU Spring to Success IIIKt Sprlnp Inc Phone 949152 8700 Page 14 Ols1rllutor Parller 909 360 1854 November 2001 Dusty Times
tor and hadn t tightened up the lug nuts properly A very e1nbarrassed Penner brought the car to the finish in ninth place the last finisher in the class Beck who ran so well for a while dropped to seventh after changing a broken axle In the SCORE Lite class there were 15 starters and every one of th em tnade it around for the first lap The lead was in the hands of Kory Halopoff who had recorded the quick time for the class at l 21 05 in his Comfort Chassis Steve Greinke was a little over three minutes behind him in second place in his Porter and in third it was Shad Kennedy in a Raceco another minute and 20 seconds back Vic Bruckmann was fourth in Arturo H0nold s new two seat Ji1nco Unfortunately the tea1n didn t have a new 1notor and were using the old 1776cc single seat 1notor for this event Brian Coneen held fifth place in another Jimco They all made it through the second lap also and Halopoff who d had one flat was still in the lead only 32 seconds up on Greinke Kennedy Brucktnann and Coneen who d had son1 e front end trouble held their positions Some of those who were running were a long way back For exa1nple To1n Ridings who d had some kind of problem while going through contingency on Friday and had flnaily determined he d run out of gas The fac1 that it took him over three hours to complete his first lap makes one wonder if there wasn t a bi t 1nore to the problem Mark Kyle and Ron Dalke both used over two hours for the first lap but then went on at a fairly decent pace Ridings however was over three hours getting through Lap 2 also He s a persistent one Most of these cars got new drivers for the second half of the race Halopoff put his cousin Harley Lerner into the driver s seat Ha r ley s a foot taller than Kory so the car has an adequate seat The team still led at the end of Lap 3 though they were having so 111 e fuel p u mp problems Kennedy had 1noved up to second 11 minutes back as Greinke disap peared Coneen s co driver Tin1 Lawrence was now third fighting a brake problem Mike Coneen who d been close to the lead pack struggling with a carbureto r tha_t kept loading up in the rough put his father in lawto be Tom Schilling in and Kearney split the driving in their Jeep and took the Class 3 win but not without some serious trouble on the third lap cracked then the crack traveled around the oil sender losing the ground and making the light go off which gave Arturo a false sense of security Letner had a flat tire during his stint but it didn t slow hi1n much and he went on in front The team took the win finishing 24 minutes in front of second place That was Cohen and Schilling who reported no flat tires And Schilling said I loved it I m back Coneen and Lawrence catne in third only 43 seconds later followed by Stroud in fourth place In fifth it was Jerry Penhall and Jon Kenhedy L J who d broken a head stud early in the day and had been down on power They d also had a flat Shad Kennedy disappeared on the last lap for unk nown reasons Ridings who must have been having a miserable day got his finish the last in the class at 10 hours and 41 minutes Class 5 was practically not there Only the two perennial tea1ns the Outlaw group with Michael James and Mike Kalicki and George Seeley and his New Beetle came to play James recorded the quick time for the class at 1 29 30 on the first lap to put himself about a minute and a half in front of Seeley But he had problems on the second lap and Seeley went into the lead by 1 7 minutes Then even though Seeley s car wouldn t stay in third gear James and Kalicki had worse trouble involving broken limiter straps and they could not regain the lead Seeley had a flat on the final lap but some helpful spectators changed it for him and he crossed the finish line in first place but only by 15 minutes James and Kalicki had a pretty good last lap but it just wasn t enough to catch up Class 7 was next to take the green flag and at the end of the first lap Craig Turner had the lead in his Ford But his suspension had been set up wrong and needed adjusting so he wasn t happy with his time Shawn Wanzek was second in another Ford just under three 1ninutes later and Scott Sells in a Toyota ran third another nine minutes back On the second lap Turner s ti1ne had improved and he held the lead with Wanzek still in second place and Sells holding third Behind them Ernesto Cervantes who d had a front flat that tore up a caliper and left him with no front brakes on the first lap now received the fast tin1 e for the class at 1 28 58 He was playing catch up very seriously Turner was having a good day now that his suspension worked the way he wanted it and he continued to lead Sells was now in second place about 21 minutes down and Cervantes was rolled up in a ball with a broken tie rod He and his passenger were unhurt and the parts and pieces were removed repaired and replaced but it was a five hour lap Wanzek didn t complete the third lap Turner carried on serenely running evenly paced laps to take the win And Cervantes once repaired did a fourth lap in good enough ti1ne to get a second place with a time of 10 3 8 39 Class 1 2 1600 started next with 1 7 entries Only one Bobby Altamirano in a J imco failed to get the first lap done And the lead belonged to Rob MacCachren in his Fraley who had recorded the fast lap for this class at 1 27 08 He had a 1ninute and six seconds on Adam Pfankuch in his Kernco Dale Ebberts in a Chenowth ran third another minute and four seconds later and Rick Boyer was fourth feeling that his Lothringer wasn t getting through the uphill sand as well as he d like In fifth it was Travis Fletcher in a Baja Shop chassis On the second lap Pfankuch had moved into the lead but he had only si x seconds on MacCachren who d hit a rock and flattened a tire MacCachren had to pit for a new spare and since he d foreseen a possible problem like that he d arranged to have fuel for his car at every pit around the track Thus while his tire was re placed the crew also du1nped fuel saving him another stop At this point Ebberts was still third Boyer fourth and Fletcher fifth As it turned out November 2001 Rob MacCachren had just one flat to mar his day and otherwise kept his Fraley chassis moving right along to win the 1 2 1600 class by 22 minutes MacCachren s strategy 1nay have been unnecessary Pfankuch rolled over on the third lap and was unable to set the car back up on its wheels He had no tow strap to tie to his car and allow a competitor to help with a quick tug and at that point no pit crews were being allowed out on the track due to extremely dusty conditions So he sat for a long titne MacCachren was now 19 minutes in front of Boyer who was having a trouble free day And Brian and Joe Jeffrey in a Jimco ran third Steve Roberts was now fourth in his Lothringer and Ken Browne moved to fifth in his Dun rite Fletcher lost an hour and a half on that lap and Ebberts fell out when a valve broke MacCachren had no further problems and stayed in front to take the win Boyer who had a rock stuck in his throttle cable for a while finished second abot1t 22 minutes later In third it was the Jeffrey brothers reporting only one flat and too 1nany bumps Roberts was fourth and Browne finished fifth The team of Kash Vessels and Jason Hatz usually a bit closer to the front had repl aced a trans1nission on the first lap and had then decided to just cruise and ensure a finish They were sixth Fletcher fell to seventh and Humberto Rodriguez was the last finisher in his Chenowth There were surprisingly few 5 1600 entries but t hat may have been partly because so1ne tea1ns had problems getting across the border from Mexico because of tighter than normal security measures Gerardo lribe was teamed with Ernie Negrete and he drove the first lap recording the fast lap for this class at 1 45 08 to be in front by about eight minutes Mario Gutierrez was second and Alla Gregory ran third lribe held on to his lead which was 15 minutes bYthe end of the second lap and it was Gregory who d rolled over and had two flat tires Continued on page 16 OBA Discount Foreign Daniel Gutierrez took over for his brother and held on to third still about 14 minutes down Negrete had a really good fourth lap and took the win by 19 minutes He and his passenger made a nice finish on their last trip through the infield course by waving a good sized American flag out of the passenger side window Gregory and Kobayashi who d had serious clutch trouble for both of his laps were second and the Gutierrez team finished third only 13 minutes later A _ It was a good race for this Bob Land piloted his Isuzu Vehicross to a victory in the Stock Mini Truck class Troy Herbst had a bunch of flat tires on his Smithbuilt Truggy but he still recorded class too bad more of them the fast lap of the day at 1 10 01 and went home the overall winner with a time of 9 41 17 for his three laps weren t able to be there The Class 3 entry was in second place Gutierrez place and dropped to third of front brakes but had no Kobayashi who d taken over Negrete took over for the other trouble He led by just for Gregory They were all small also with only three had lost about 15 minutes with a rear flat in a bad final two laps and he ran out 13 1ninu tes over S teve running very close times starters And Kirk Kovel didn t get is big Bronco through the first lap leaving just two competitors to make their way through the dust Billy Bunch had his Jeep Cherokee in the lead from the get go and his first lap was the quickest for the class at 1 59 42 This group had voted to run around the course only three ti1nes It was a good thing Bunch s co1npetition Rich Severson was driving a vintage racer It was a Jeep originally built for rally use then raced by Don Adams in 1985 in SCORE HORA CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS IN events The legendary CLASS 10 AND CLASS 12 Randall team had then bought the car and raced it a while but for 1nany years it has sat in the Randall s yard part of a vast collection of old off road race cars The st Jeep had a 2 8 liter V6 moCLASS 10 1 PLACE tor and about eight inches of travel One of the reasons CHRIS HARROLD 1006 Severson wanted to race it Jimco Honda Major Performance was that he could fit into it He stands six feet 10 inches tall and doesn t fit many cars So the Kandalls let him use their old toy with the stipulation that any upgrades he made would be left on it when he brought it back Grant Randall also told him that it would be OK 5 CLASS 12 1 T PLACE if they crashed it but he didn t want it burned up KORY HALOPOFF 1214 They had two flats on their first lap and were about an HARLEY LETNER hour and 20 minutes behind Bergdahl VW Dave Bonner Bunch On the second lap Bunch held on to the lead and part way around he got out and let John Kearney who d been riding take over the driving Now they had well CLASS 12 2ND PLACE over two hours on Severson who d broken a MIKE COHEN 1205 steering bolt His pit crew TOM SCHILLING was made up of folks new to the sport for the most part Jimco VW Wik s Racing and while they were willing and eager they weren t necessarily as skilled as a more experienced group might have been Still the Jeep kept moving forward An excellen compliment to off road racing s finest chassis and On the third lap Kearney engines broke the left side lower link which means that The perfect 5 speed gear system fro pre runners and dual while he could go on he sport recreational vehicles needed to reduce his speed drastically He drove The MOS is now available from all authorized Mendeola Dealers around in first and second gear That lap took him three and a half hours 290 Trousdale Dr J Chula Vista CA 91910 619 691 1000 Fax 619 691 1324 Severson might have had a www mendeolaracinq com MENDEOLA RACING S NEWEST OFFERING THE MDS HITS BIG AT THE PRIMM 300 Continued on page 18 Page 16 November 2001 Dusty Times

Jesse Jones had a long hard day with all kinds of problems but still crossed the finish line first in his Class 8 Chevrolet chance except that he was dealing with a mystery electrical problem Kearney and Bunch finished in time to record a win Severson and his crew checked all their electrical bits and pieces but nothing helped Then they noticed a wisp of s rnoke fro1n behind the dash that worried hirn because he d promis e d Randall he wouldn t burn it up but at least it gave them a clue They finally determined that they d lo st a ground So they re cri mped th e ir connections and everything worked But sadly when they got to the finish line they were about 15 m inu res too late to be official finishers In Class 3 1 there were just two cars but it looked like a good race in the making Clive Skilton had his Jeep there and lku a Hanawa fro1n Jap an was racing the Pri1nm for the first time in his Mitsubishi Montero Skilton had the lead at the end of Lap 1 but on ly by seven 1ninu tes and then on the second lsip as he gained farniliarity with the terrain Hanawa zipped off the fast lap for their class at 1 50 42 and put himself into the lead He d also made an adjustment to _his shocks so things were working better Unfortunately Skilton broke a front end on the last lap this class ran only three laps and didn t get to the finish Hanawa ran another good lap and reported a troublefree race but he agreed with the Jeffrey brothers in the 1 2 160 0 car who d sa id there we re too many bumps Still he went back to Japan with a victory under his belt He plans to be back for the Baja 1000 Class 7S had a whole herd of trucks on hand for this event Bruce Landfield worked some magic got a handful of special con tingency type prizes just for this class and attracted 21 of them to Primm The group held a pit crew competition on Friday night a nd the finishing order of that competition deter 1nined the start order of the trucks on Saturday morn ing So in add iti on to their prize for first lace the winning team that of Jesse Rodriguez got to start at the front of their class Of the 21 trucks all but Javier Sacio Kevin Davis who blew a motor and Joel Stankavich who rolled Cousins Harley Letner and Kory Halopoff drove their Comfort Chassis two seater to the SCORE Lite win leading every mile of the way over in Landfield s truck made it thr ough the first lap At the end of the lap the lead belonged to Darren York in Joe Custer s Ford and he had recorded the fast lap for the group at 1 36 59 In second place it was Co ry Susag in his C hevy followed by Rodriguez in his Ford and then Craig Stewart in the Brown and O Brien Ford was fourth Fifth place belonged to Ron Smith in an S 10 Only 16 minutes separated first from fifth place so it looked as it a hot race was developing But it was fraugh t with challenges On the second lap they lost six more competitor s including Smith York was still leading and the team had even had time to correct a fuel pressure problem because he d built a good le a d He had 15 minutes on seco nd place Susag who had thought h e d like to win the 1 000 prize that was up for the fast lap but figured he d rather be the winner at the end of the f0urth lap Rodriguez was still third Stewart fourth and now Mike Co l eman and Steve Oliiges were fifth in their Ford Another four teams fell out of the competition on the third lap arn ong them York s ride Owner Joe Custer had got in but he broke a tie rod and when the tie rod was fixed the truck wouldn t start That was the end of their day Susag s partner Doug Siewert moved into the lead a nd they had a small problem with a water line that came loose but made a quick repair and an addition of water and they were leading by seven minutes Stewart and his co driver Mark Newhan moved up to second place and Coleman and Olliges were now third about four minutes behind them In fourth it was Miguel Alvarado in his Jeep while Cody Swanty in another Jeep ra n fifth only a minute behind him Rodriguez had some hard luck a nd his third lap was three hours a nd 26 minutes long Th en he couldn t get a fourth lap done Susag and Siewert went on to take the win finishin g about 11 minutes in front of Cole1nan and 01liges a tough team who d run a steady pace all day In third it was Stewart and Newhan another 10 min utes out and reporting that _their motor was going away They were followed in by Alvarado in fourth place a nd Swanty who finished fifth Jirn Wirnmer was sixth in his Toyota and Jason Hutter from Colorado was seventh also in a Toyota and none of the others got to the finish Class 9 started next with only four entries and the y were to run only three lap s which was plenty for this class The lead was held by Cisco Bio at the end of Lap 1 his Tubular Designs car about eight minutes in front of Arturo Velazco in a Chenowth In third place it was John Scharf in another Chenowth who d had so much trouble it took him five and a half hours to do one lap He d been stopped in the infield area near the bleacher seats for a long time because he d heard the death rattle of his ring and pinion but was finally convinced to go the last 100 yards or so to get credit for a whole l ap Ivan Gomez who d been expected to do well in his Raceco had been near the end of his first lap when disaster hit He d just been passed by a faster car when a Class 1 car not realizing he was there in the dust came up on him way too fast to stop and ran into him ending his race day The Class 1 car was finished also On the second lap Bio and his co driver Sergio Coyote Gutierrez had another good tim but by now they were by the1n se lves Velazco didn t finish the lap and there was no one e lse Bio at d Gutierrez had a trouble free day not even any flat tires a nd ran a good third l ap to secure their victory In the Stock Full class there were only the two entries of Marc Stein and his Ford and John Griffin and the big white Hurnmer Brothers Brian and Joe Jeffrey found the course too rough for their taste but still managed a nice third place in Class 1 2 1600 in their Doug Fortin Jr had a flat tire and a lot of traffic but he kept his Jimco Steve Greinke was looking good in his Porter running second in Jimco moving forward at a good clip and finished the day fourth in Class 1 SCORE Lite but some disaster put an end to his race on lap three Bob Lofton and Mike Julson tried out their new four speed Adam Pfankuch got his Kernco into the lead of the 112 1600 class transmission and liked the result They finished second in Class 1 in and then rolled it over a fatal error because he was never able to get Rick Boyer bad trouble with the uphill sand but managed to move his their Jimco back on his wheeis again Lothringer fast enough to finish second in the 112 1600 class Page 18 November 2001 Dusty Times

VDRRA Yeringtc n 200 Steve Souza was a long second after lap 2 but his competition went away and Steve was able to take the coveted Class 9 win Mike Lehners was the Class 10 and overa 1 winner at Yerington and he squeaked out the win with only a minute to spare The atmosphere in Yerington for the end of the summer last race of VORRA s 2001 desert series was much more relaxed than the previous two desert races The racers were surer of what to expect from VORRA s new pro1noters and vice versa Dennis and Bonnie Kordonowy were much more relaxed and expectant of the task at hand of running the race The racers were relaxed knowing how the show was to be run and run just as it had before very smoothly and without a hitch Leading up to the race the race track was laid out and much to m y disbelief was all new I ve been racing riding pre running and through the years marking courses in the Yerington area since VORRA discovered the town over 15 years ago I didn t know that there could be an all new course out there Well 1naybe not all new but it was 25 new As Terrie Tavis put it a technical course Sixty five miles in length 45 miles of twisty silty rocky rough roads with hill climbs and downhills the balance being fast wide open stretches The highlight of the new section was the hill climb back into the start finish For years we ve been racing up the same stretch of road but now a new wash was found Prior to the race it wasn t much of a road and at some point you couldn t see a road it was narrow rocky and straight up At the end of the race there was a still narrow but established road with more rocks and holes and now it was littered with race cars that broke trying to make the climb At the drawing and welcoming party Friday night the folks at J B Machine Shop in Carson City gave away a free entry to the last driver pulled from the can This race lucky winner was S teve Brunner driving a Class 8 Dusty Times truck VORRA would like to third John Tavis 1017 was EL PREZ SEZ Ain t no Wahzoo I ve been asked on many occasions if when cut do I bleed checks answering that question always seemed thoughtless yes In the scope of the inhumane acts of senseless terrorism that have so greatly affected all of humanity that has been implemented against our great country I feel I should clarify my answer to that question I when cut bleed red white and blue and would also like to say God Bless America and all who defend our freedom It is a freedom that gives us so many choices in our lives such as that to pursue a life of o ff road racing I for one am not prepared to give up that choice to some cowardly terrorist any more than to a tree hugging lobbyist The only thing that can pale my pride as a _Checker is that of being an American My heart goes out as does that of our membership to all of humankind whose lives are forever changed or lost we honored all dedicating a moment of prayer and reflection at the closing of our September 12th Call for Every Day Year Round THE BEST IN THE DESERT Page so meeting We grow ever stronger together The Primm 300 line up had a few changes from my original copy in last month s column the disadvantage of an early press deadline Robert Harman pitted instead of racing The Ridgecrest Rocket Torn Koch and Jarnrnin Jimmy Hook filled out our racing line up along with President George Seeley Jr We had a Main Pit and two outlying pits to cover the course and tend to biz Our race radio relay was put on hold due to Jim s affiliation with airlines and the prior week s acts of terrorism He unfortunately had to work and was unable to brief anyone on the relay system We are in the process of training four or five mern bers the setup and usage of our new rely so it will always be covered from here on This is the who s and what s of the race Main Pit was covered by our Vice President Randy Spahr with helping hands offered up by his brother Steve Spahr Robert Bullhorn Harman Jay Byrd Roger Byrd Steve Scott Mike Duenas Victor Bussey Jirrirny Tucker Doug Brown John Murphy Dick McCool and Billy McCool Pit A was covered by our past Vice President Michael Lee Thompson with the welcomed support of Howard peedburnp Anderson Malcolm Bryce Bob Jordan Tom Dittfield Mark Edwards Reese King and myself Now our very newest member Josh Gilliam was handling Pit B the happy social pit with happy helpers brother Brent Willie Berman Brian Steel Torn Angerman and Mike Wright Now I m not sure how but the McCools made this pit sheet as well Once again in listening to our pit reports I hear of many non Checker repairs being performed on vehicles like that of Dennis Boyle or the 801 truck belonging to Dennis McCarthy It seems as though we worked on these guys in each of our pits bringing me to ask the big question GOT CLUB Our racers had very little work performed Seeley stopped only for fuel and a flat change and went on to win his class Torn Koch was running his final race of the pro dirt series and finished with an impressive third place Torn wound up with a sixth in class in the Primm line up The competition in Class 1 was fierce as always at the Primm and even more so with this being the Pro Dirt finale Now our one time past president Jarnrnin Jimmy Hook was working with his new sponsor DNS and running hard and fast when he began to experience some electrical problems With a quick pit stop and new coil November 2001 and a new driver they began to make up time but ran out of motor 22 miles from the finish when the camshaft broke I know that his new sponsor recognized that they have signed a winner in this young talented and experienced driver by his performance Best of luck to you Jimmy Congratulations to our racers and thank you to our committed pitters and those who have been Jim Cleamons was busy out in the Stoddard Valley putting on his MORE race which attracted a couple of Checker cars on the same weekend of the Primm Billy Robertson and Mike Norris re presented us at this race Jim Greenway along with Dave Knight handled checker pit coverage They set up out by the Slash X It seems that Billy battled his way to a third overall fighting a leaky fuel cell most of the way Mike s day was going a bit differently As it was told to us at the meeting Mike started out in the car and lost third gear about six miles out and returned for a fix then turned it over to Justin They somehow passed the main pit twice blew a motor and nev er completed one lap ending up with a DNF Once again another fine effort by our proud Checkers Billy Robertson raced is Class 1 car at the Snore 250 along with Doug Brown and Glen Rolf It was a rough day fo anything electrical it seems that the regulator went sou th and started eating little things like the Parker Pumper the radio and a couple of batteries but even in the fact of a power crisis our determined Checkers pushed on to take third in class Sponsored by Edison Nope too much power man We had two entries in the BITD Vegas to Reno race The team of Dennis and Matt Crowley with Dan the man Martin represented us Mike Childress also represented the club while racing his bike Our president George Seeley Jr ran a pit at Goldfield and was joined by George Thompson and Jeff Hibbard I won t hear any results from this race until after press time so I will have them next r nonth I will also have all the exciting Off Road Expo highlights to tell of from our Checkers pride booth Speaking of Checker pride one of our proud members is back in town to stay Thumper s home again so I m sure we will be seeing more of him Word is some have seen how he wears his pride This brings me to new prospective Jay Byrd who agreed that upon becoming a full member no pun he would carry on a family tradition Thumper is donating a picture of that tradition I think I would wear my pride more like Tom Angerman Anyhow great to see Thumper back now we have somewhere to go before the AMA races Cool We had another proud Checker come back with us Glen Wolf Glen has been a key member of Rod Hall s Hummer team Great to have these members back once a Checker always a Checker Welcome home We have set a date for our annual Checkers victims of these senseless terrorist attacks on innocent American lives and property Brad and I were wondering if the Primm race was still on the following weekend Turns out it went on as planned Our Pres Brad Inch was invited to drive The Primm with Max Hamburg from Buellton CA I arrived in Primm Friday afternoon there were American flags on everything motor homes race cars chase trucks you name it it had a flag on it Max Hamburg with passenger Bernie Carr started the Primm 300 race in fine fashion keeping the Mirage 1600 car up with the pack of 15 cars He ran trouble free for two laps then put in Brad Inch and Jeff Ehrs a m to finish up the battle Brad got in to start Lap 3 received a fresh front tire and a tank of gas Brad complained about chasing the rear of the car around a little bit but wasn t going Dusty Times
to let it slow him down Then around Mil e 40 a rear trailing arm weld let go Day over Brad called in for the trailer Lucky we had Kenny Freeman around to guide us as to how to get Brad out of the Hidden Valley area We teamed up with Rick Boyer s crew for pit suppo rt Rick ran pretty much trouble free all day Only problem reported is a rock found its way into the throttle linka ge But it didn t slow Rick down a bit consistent lap times all day brought him up to second place by the end of the event Pits as follows Main Pit Brian Smith Nicolette don t call me Nicole Dunn Jeff Mouer Paul Pit B Myself Wayne Nosala Bill Graham Mike Hinson and his son Matt We kept track of lap times helped the Baja pit guys with changing a shock on an open car Pit Rover Kenny and Kerri Freeman Great help on the radio spotting positions calling in times and helping retrieve Brad in Max s broken car A ii in ail a great race to spectate if you had a pit pass Thanks to the Hamburg family for their hospitality The spaghetti dinner was awesome There was also a MORE race on the same date as the Primm The race was set up as a ten lap event 25 miles each Dave Girdner with passenger cousin Jeremy Craig riding had a great day battling it out with two other 1600 racers Dave drove the first five laps taking over the first position within ten miles of the event After the second lap Jeremy wasn t feeling well they stopped to put in Kip Hazlebaker losing some time and fell back to third place The next three laps had many lead changes back and forth between Dave and the other 1600 cars At the end of Lap 5 Dave gave the car to T J Craig TJ promptly set fast lap time in class for the event TJ had a few flats later in the event but was building a pretty comfortable lead enough to do a quick riders change so they put in Robin McMullin to relieve Kip then cruised to the 1600 win Rob Stapp and Todd Craig had a pretty flawless run in their nine car They fought the front end a little all day but it didn t slow them down a bit they got the Class 9 win by about 15 minutes Upcom ing CORE events Dusty Times as follows Oct 20 Operation Desert Clean up II CORE member Tim Lindsay is helping put There will be some big guns coming down from Vegas to play in our backyard so we need to lend our support to CORE racers here in California that may need fast efficient pit support Also a late news flash Kevin McGilvery and Nills Castillo ran BITD Vegas to Reno Kevin started with passenger Luis Navarro running with no problems N ills and passenger Donny Angel took over the ride in Candelaria running trouble free until getting a flat and shattering a wheel around Hawthorn NV Donny got out and was attempting to change the tire but was having a problem with the lug wrench fitting the damaged lug nuts re su lting in the wrench slipping and giving Donny a black eye The first story I heard was that N ills GAVE Donny the black eye for takjng too long to change the tire Not true but anyway Liberty and Racing in the Desert So let s keep racing There were three races in September that F A l R members participated in the SCORE Primm 300 the M O R E Mighty Mojave 300 and the BITD Vegas to Reno Brian and Brent Parkhouse had both their cars Brian s Class 1 and Brent s Class 1 2 1600 at the Primm although Brent didn t drive just rode Jesse Rodrigu z was also there in his 7S and Tom Ridings of course in his SCORE Lite 12 car Brenr s car had a flat on the first lap and then lost a bolt in the steering on Lap 2 They had to drive very carefully for 25 miles to the next pit for repairs and then broke a torsion adjuster finger on Lap 3 that ended their race Brian s Class 1 car w1ts experiencing overheating problems and was slowed drastically He was able to finish though Jesse Rodriguez had his truck working very well and was running with the leaders when it broke on Lap 3 Not sure what happened but the truck is awesome and very well prepared He s going to be someone to be reckoned with in that class Tom Ridings had a long day A broken tie rod and a lot of other problems slowed him up but he did finish so he s still in the point chase At the Mighty Mojave 300 it was those Fay girls Stacy and Kathy and Harry Dunne carrying the F A l R colors Stacy and Kathy had a lot of flats on their truck and an electrical fire on the distributor but finished and had lots of fun Harry borrowed a Class 9 car cuz he s doing so well in the season points and didn t want to miss a race with his car being down for repairs He was running fast with a 5 1600 when a ball joint broke It took an hour and a half to get one to him Then he lost a cylinder with a broken lifter foot Next it was a spark plug wiring problem caused by putting the distributor in backwards I guess it could have been worse Maybe not Four F A l R cars went to the Vegas to Reno Scott Boyd in his 5 1600 and three l 2 1600s Greg Blakeman in his Mirage John Miller with his Bonner Hawke and Brady Wisdom in Mike Long s Suspensions Unlimited The weather was beautiful only in the high 60s or low 90s at the start in Pahrump There was an accident on the road from Vegas to Pahrump that held up a lot of the later racers and support crews Scott Boyd barely made his start time by just a few minutes It s always nice to start a race with your ulcer s flaring There s enough adrenaline in your system as it is The 1600s that s the 2000 class for BITD all got off the line in good shape But at RM 13 Eric Brown driving John Miller s car got in some dust trying to pass another 1600 and hit a rock The dust was terrible all day The car rolled They got tl e car back on its rubber but lost a lot of time in the first pit trying to fix a bent reverse lock out on the shifter and played catchup the rest of the race Greg Blakeman took the start and had the car in second place at Tonopah Matt took over hanging in there u n ti getting stuck between Mina and Luning There was some big silty hills that are a real challenge especially at night Unfortunately a couple of cars got past them while they were held up During his stint Matt stopped to help one of their competitors get their ca r back over after it rolled and also towed a 7 truck for several miles Its always nice to see good sportsmanship Jerry Longo started in the Brady Wisdom Mike Long car and moved past everybody in front of him quickly to be leader OI the road if not on time But there s always a but the BITD officials stopped him at a road crossing right in the middle of a silt hole that was made by all the cars in fro nt of him Jerry couldn t get out He sat there while all the other cars passed him when the officials decided that stopping there could be a problem After getting a tow out of the hole Jerry raced on and was only about five minutes down to the leader when he arrived at Goldfield their scheduled driver change The pit crew found no flat tires but the right rear and left front wheels were bent so badly that they needed to be changed While changing the rear tire a torn c v boot was found They had a complete axle setup in the car that was used to replace the one with the torn boot Then another torn boot was found on the left side so it had to be replaced This put them down about 30 minutes when Brady Wisdom was finally able to get back in the race Still there was 300 miles to go and anything could and probably would happen It did Continued on page 54 r I I I I I I I I FOR SALE News By Wes Wisdom September 11 2001 has forced each of us to look at our lives with a different perspective There are a By the time they got to Pit 9 at Candelaria Brady was pulling in for fuel just as the leader was leaving the pit Now he was less than two minutes behind Somewhere between Mina and Luning Brady was in the lead car s dust when all of a sudden there was no more dust Apparently the lead car had rolled putting Brady into the lead From there it was just a cruise to the finish for the win During all this the Miller car with Chuck Walty sharing the driving with Eric still had shifter problems hitting reverse does make an ugly sound but kept motoring on and with everybody s problems seeming to even things out came in third The Blakemans were very close behind in fourth place It was a very good competitive race for the 1600 class cars and everybody was very satisfied just t9 finish Scott Boyd in is 5 1600 ran strong the whole race except for some electrical problems It seems that a wire got pinched in the air cleaner housing after the filter was changed out It fried all of the wiring up to and including the dash Needless to say it took a long time to rewire the car But they did and they finished lt was a great showing for our F A I R racers Four for Four finishers with two first place
