ROSH HASHANAH MORNING On this Holy Day let us remember the earth s oppressed the weak and the weary all who are imprisoned without cause Let us seek to bring hope to every home and comfort to every heart In a world cold with fear and rage let us never fall victim to despair Let us stand fast against uncertainty and prove capable of unlimited faith mi zO d l Md d Ig n i i d Y KEx A Baruch atah Adonai m chayeih hakol hameitim Blessed are You Adonai who gives life to all beings PLEASE BE SEATED Un taneh Tokef swz dpzpe Today we call it by its rightful name A Day of Dread nora v ayom Unwelcome visitor for we want to live in a sunny world where God is love and all endings are happy But the drumbeat sounds and the words tumble down and even the angels tremble with fear For all things are judged and all things will pass and life ends in a heartbeat and death knows our name At the start of the year in a season of truth comes the Day of Remembrance for all we forget and all we deny and we fall on our knees in the depths of our hearts for we know that the bell tolls for us 17
ROSH HASHANAH MORNING The words are old and the language was theirs but the call is real and the message is ours Take hold of your life while you still have the chance for your story will end and it might be this year in a way you don t know Take hold of your life make things right while you can and don t miss the call of the Day of Dread Un taneh tokef k dushat hayom ki hu nora v ayom Uvo tinasei malchutecha v yikon b chesed kis echa v teisheiv alav be emet Emet ki atah hu dayan umochiyach v yodea va ed v choteiv v choteim v sofeir umoneih v tizkor kol hanishkachot v tiftach et seifer hazichronot umei eilav yikarei v chotam kol adam bo mFI d z Xc w s w Y d Pz pE V PY FaE m i e xFp Ed i M c q g A oFM ie L z Ek ln z n A ei l r a Wz e L q M g i k FnE o Ic Ed d Y i M z n m zFg e a zFk e c r e rcFi e l M x M fz e d pFnE x tFq e x t q z g Yt z e zFg MW Pd x T i ei l n E zFpFx k Gd FA mc l M c i mzFg e Clergy Reflection The unique power of the Un taneh Tokef prayer derives from its starkness It bluntly challenges us to reckon with our frailty and mortality Many of us are uncomfortable with classical notions of God and God s power but this moment of introspection fills us with doubt We may never know if our faults or merits truly affect our fate but there is no doubt that they can transform our lives and the world around us On our minds is the ancient unknowable question who will live and who will die But what if we asked ourselves instead how have I lived and how shall I live That is the awesome and dreadful power of this holy day when we must confront our inner selves in the presence of God Rabbi Yoni Regev 18
ROSH HASHANAH MORNING Let us proclaim the sacred power of this day it is awesome and full of dread For on this day Your dominion is exalted Your throne established in steadfast love there in truth You reign In truth You are Judge and Arbiter Counsel and Witness You write and You seal You record and recount You remember deeds long forgotten You open the book of our days and what is written there proclaims itself for it bears the signature of every human being The great Shofar is sounded the still small voice is heard the angels gripped by fear and trembling declare in awe This is the Day of Judgment For even the Hosts of Heaven are judged as all who dwell on earth stand arrayed before You As the shepherd seeks out the flock and makes the sheep pass under the staff so do You muster and number and consider every soul setting the bounds of every creature s life and decreeing its destiny 19

ROSH HASHANAH MORNING ald zlitz Silent Prayer Hin ni Send Me Someone once cried out to God Adonai the world is in such a mess everything seems wrong Why don t You send someone to help and change the world The voice of Adonai replied I did send someone I sent you We pray for life we ask God for a year of health and happiness We cannot merely ask Tell the Almighty tell the world tell yourself Send Me Hin ni sh lacheini Here I am send me vvv A Teaching on T shuvah Repentance You have to judge every person generously Even if you have reason to think that person is completely wicked it s your job to look hard and seek out some bit of goodness someplace in that person where he is not evil When you find that bit of goodness and judge the person that way you really may raise her up to goodness Treating people this way allows them to be restored to come to t shuvah This is why the Psalmist said Just a little bit more and there will be no one wicked you will look at his place and he will not be there Psalm 36 We are told to judge one and all so generously so much on the good side even if we think they re as sinful as can be By looking for that little bit the place however small within them where there is no sin and everyone after all has such a place and by telling them showing them that that s who they are we can help them change their lives vvv 27

YOM KIPPUR MORNING Meditation on Prayer Prayer is a way of sensitizing ourselves to the wonder of life of expressing gratitude and of praising and acknowledging the reality of God One need not believe that God will interfere with the ongoing process of nature to feel that prayer is worthwhile We may have different understandings of what God is No definition we have is sufficient or answers all doubts and questions To be aware that God exists that there is more in the universe than physical matter that a moral order is inherent in creation that humans are responsible for their conduct and can help to bring about the perfection or at least the improvement of the world and of life that is sufficient reason for prayer Rabbi Reuven Hammer vvv daeh dpy Shanah Tovah 59
YOM KIPPUR MORNING A Prayer for Life Source of all life we pray for life Bless us once more with a year of life so that we may be privileged to complete the year we have just begun Despite the burdens and the heartbreaks the pains and perils we want to live we ask to be inscribed in the Book of Life But even as we pray that years may be added to our lives we ask too that true life may be added to our years May the new year be for us a time for enhancing the quality of our lives enriching their content deepening their meaning Help us to keep our minds alive May we be open to new ideas entertain challenging doubts reexamine long held opinions nurture a lively curiosity and strive to add to our store of knowledge Help us to keep our hearts alive May we develop greater compassion be receptive to new friendships sustain a buoyant enthusiasm grow more sensitive to the beauty which surrounds us Help us to keep our souls alive May we be more responsive to the needs of others less vulnerable to consuming greed more attentive to the craving for fellowship and more devoted to truth Help us to keep our spirits alive May we face the future with confidence knowing that every age has its unique joys and satisfactions each period in our lives a glory of its own Help us to keep our faith alive May we be sustained by the knowledge that You have planted within us life eternal and have given us the power to live beyond our years Whether our years be few or many help us to link our lives to the life of our people and to our eternal faith 60

YOM KIPPUR MORNING swz dpzpe Un taneh Tokef When we really begin a New Year it is decided And when we actually repent it is determined Who shall be truly alive And who shall merely exist Who shall be tormented by the fire of ambition And whose hopes shall be quenched by the waters of failure Who shall be pierced by the sharp sword of envy And who shall be torn by the wild beast of jealousy Who shall hunger for companionship And who shall thirst for approval Who shall be shattered by storms of change And who shall be plagued by pressures to conform Who shall be strangled by insecurity And who shall be beaten into submission Who shall be content with their lot And who shall go wandering in search of satisfaction Who shall be serene And who shall be distraught But repentance prayer and charity temper judgment s severe decree Clergy Reflection It is a struggle for some to read the Un taneh Tokef prayer literally However the prayers and ideas in Judaism can be taken literally or figuratively The text above by Rabbi Maller is an attempt to emphasize the spirit of the prayer May we find comfort in the revised prayer Cantor Ilene Keys 76

YOM KIPPUR MORNING WE PRAY SILENTLY ald zlitz Silent Prayer The Middle of the Road is the Right Path With regard to all human traits the middle of the road is the right path For example Do not be hot tempered easily angered Nor on the other hand should you be unfeeling like a corpse Rather take the middle of the road keep an even disposition reserving your anger for occasions when it is truly warranted Similarly do not cultivate a desire for luxuries keep your eye fixed only on genuine necessities In giving to others do not hold back what you can afford but do not give so lavishly that you yourself will be impoverished Avoid both hysterical gaiety and somber dejection and instead be calmly joyful always showing a cheerful countenance Act similarly with regard to all the dispositions This is the path followed by the wise vvv We Choose We do not choose to be born We do not choose our parents We do not choose our historical epoch the country of our birth or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing We do not most of us choose to die nor do we choose the time or conditions of our death But within all of this realm of choicelessness we do choose how we shall live courageously or in cowardice honorably or dishonorably with purpose or adrift We decide what is important and what is trivial in life We decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions these choices and decisions are ours to make We decide We choose And as we decide and choose so are our lives formed vvv 85
YOM KIPPUR MORNING A Few Holds Hold on to your hand when you are about to do an unkind act Hold on to your tongue when you are ready to speak harshly Hold on to your heart when evil persons invite you to join their ranks Hold on to your temper when you are excited or angry or others are angry with you Hold on to the truth for it will serve you well and do you good throughout eternity Hold on to your character for it is and ever will be your best wealth vvv Soul Searching Most of us are experts at denying our faults We ignore our shortcomings we hide from them we blame others for our own failings With our blinders safely in place we make our way through life But the story always takes a similar turn When things go wrong we wonder why we keep making the same mistakes The answer is simple Without honesty without soul searching we can never hope to change or grow If we want to transform the plot of our lives we have to learn to become experts at facing our faults Self exploration is painful and it takes time and enormous strength But just imagine yourself freed from self defeating patterns Imagine yourself responding differently to situations that always tripped you up in the past Imagine yourself refraining from behaviors that are selfish cruel and unworthy of you Imagine yourself coming closer to the goodness to which you aspire vvv 86

YOM KIPPUR MORNING I make it with those who are standing here with us today before the Eternal our God and equally with all who are not here with us today For this commandment which I command you this day is not too hard for you nor too remote It is not in heaven that you should say Who will go up to heaven for us and fetch it for us so that we can fulfill it Nor is it beyond the sea that you should say Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us and fetch it for us so that we can fulfill it Rather it is very close to you it is in your mouth and in your heart so that you can fulfill it See I have set before you today life and good or death and evil For I command you this day to love the Eternal your God to walk in God s ways and to observe God s commandments God s statutes and God s ordinances so that you will live and increase and the Eternal your God will bless you in the land to which you are coming to take possession of it But if your heart deviates and you do not listen and you will be drawn astray and you will prostrate yourself to other deities and serve them 100 EpO r d R F pW i xW z i M Epi d l d Fd i i pt l mF Id c n r mF Id Ep O r d R EP pi x W z e i k p x W z Gd d ev O d i M e d z lt p l mF Id L Ev n l e d dw gx l e L On i n x n l e d m i nX a Ep N d gT ie dn in X d Ep N d l r i d PU r pe D z Ep rn W ie i n x n l e d m I l x a rn l e d gT ie m Id x a r l Ep l x a r i d PU r pe D z Ep rn W ie Ep N c n x aC d Li l aFx w i M FzU r l L a a l a E Li t A mF Id Li pt l i Y z p d x aFH d z e mi Ig d z xW rx d z e z e Od z e da d l mFI d L E v n i k p eik x c A z k l l Lid l d Fd i z ei z Tg e ei z ev n x n Wl e Lk x a E z ia x e z i ig e ei hR W n E d Y x W ux A Lid l d Fd i d pt i m e D Y W x l d O W a Y g C pe r nW z l e L a a l mix g mi d l l z i eg Y W d e m Y c a r e

YOM KIPPUR AFTERNOON In their fright the sailors cried out each to his own god and they flung the ship s cargo overboard to make it lighter for them Jonah meanwhile had gone down into the hold of the vessel where he lay down and fell asleep The captain went over to him and cried out How can you be sleeping so soundly Up call upon your god Perhaps the god will be kind to us and we will not perish The men said to one another Let us cast lots and find out on whose account this misfortune has come upon us They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah They said to him Tell us you who have brought this misfortune upon us what is your business Where have you come from What is your country and of what people are you I am a Hebrew he replied I worship the Eternal One the God of Heaven who made both sea and land The men were greatly terrified and they asked him What have you done And when the men learned that he was fleeing from the service of the Eternal for so he told them they said to him What must we do to you to make the sea calm around us For the sea was growing more and more stormy He answered Heave me overboard and the sea will calm down for you for I know that this terrible storm came upon you on my account Nevertheless the men rowed hard to regain the shore but they could not for the sea was growing more and more stormy about them Then they cried out to the Eternal Oh please Eternal One do not let us perish on account of this man s life Do not hold us guilty of killing an innocent person For You O Eternal One by Your will have brought this about And they heaved Jonah overboard and the sea stopped raging The men feared the Eternal greatly they offered a sacrifice to the Eternal and they made vows The Eternal provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah and Jonah remained in the fish s belly three days and three nights Jonah prayed to the Eternal his God from the belly of the fish He said 128
YOM KIPPUR AFTERNOON In my trouble I called to the Eternal And God answered me From the belly of Sheol I cried out And You heard my voice You cast me into the depths Into the heart of the sea The floods engulfed me All Your breakers and billows Swept over me I thought I was driven away Out of Your sight Would I ever gaze again upon Your holy Temple The waters closed in over me The deep engulfed me Weeds twined around my head I sank to the base of the mountains The bars of the earth closed upon me forever Yet You brought my life up from the pit O Eternal my God When my life was ebbing away I called the Eternal to mind And my prayer came before You Into Your holy Temple They who cling to empty folly forsake their own welfare But I with loud thanksgiving Will sacrifice to You What I have vowed I will perform Deliverance is the Eternal s 129
YOM KIPPUR AFTERNOON The Eternal commanded the fish and it spewed Jonah out upon dry land The word of the Eternal came to Jonah a second time Go at once to Nineveh that great city and proclaim to it what I tell you Jonah went at once to Nineveh in accordance with the Eternal s command Nineveh was an enormously large city a three days walk across Jonah started out and made his way into the city the distance of one day s walk and proclaimed Forty days more and Nineveh shall be overthrown The people of Nineveh believed God They proclaimed a fast and great and small alike put on sackcloth When the news reached the king of Nineveh he rose from his throne took off his robe put on sackcloth and sat in ashes And he had the word cried through Nineveh By decree of the king and his nobles No man or beast of flock or herd shall taste anything They shall not graze and they shall not drink water They shall be covered with sackcloth man and beast and shall cry mightily to God Let everyone turn back from his evil ways and from the injustice of which he is guilty Who knows but that God may turn and relent God may turn back from God s wrath so that we do not perish God saw what they did how they were turning back from their evil ways And God renounced the punishment God had planned to bring upon them and did not carry it out This displeased Jonah greatly and he was grieved He prayed to the Eternal saying O Eternal One Isn t this just what I said when I was still in my own country That is why I fled beforehand to Tarshish For I know that You are a compassionate and gracious God slow to anger abounding in kindness renouncing punishment Please God take my life for I would rather die than live The Eternal replied Are you that deeply grieved Now Jonah had left the city and found a place east of the city He made a booth there and sat under it in the shade until he should see what happened to the city 130
YOM KIPPUR AFTERNOON The Eternal God provided a ricinus plant which grew up over Jonah to provide shade for his head and save him from discomfort Jonah was very happy about the plant But the next day at dawn God provided a worm which attacked the plant so that it withered And when the sun rose God provided a sultry east wind the sun beat down on Jonah s head and he became faint He begged for death saying I would rather die than live Then God said to Jonah Are you so deeply grieved about the plant Yes he replied so deeply that I want to die Then the Eternal said You cared about the plant which you did not work for and which you did not grow which appeared overnight and perished overnight And should not I care about Nineveh that great city in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not yet know their right hand from their left and many beasts as well BLESSING AFTER THE HAFTARAH Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech haolam tzur kol haolamim tzadik b chol hadorot haEl hane eman haomeir v oseh ham dabeir um kayeim shekol d varav emet vatzedek Al haTorah v al haavodah v al han vi im v al Yom HaShabbat hazeh v al Yom HaKippurim hazeh shenatata lanu Adonai Eloheinu lik dushah v lim nucha lim chilah velis lichah ul chaparah l chavod ul tifaret Al hakol Adonai Eloheinu anachnu modim lach um var chim otach Epi d l i i d Y KEx A mi n lFr d l M xEv m lFr d K ln l d zFxFc d l kA wiC v d UFr e x nF d o n Pd l MW m Iw n E x Ac nd wc v e z n eix aC l re dcFa rd l re dxFY d l r z AX d mFi l re mi i a Pd d fd mixER Md mFi l re d fd Epi d Fl i i Ep l Y z PW d li gn l d gEp n le d WEc w l cFa kl dx Rk l E d gi lq le zx t z l E Ep g p Epi d Fl i i l Md l r K zF mi kx an E K l micFn 131

YOM KIPPUR YIZKOR SERVICE The Wisdom of Our Tradition Our tradition shows great wisdom in teaching us to gather for services of remembrance on Yom Kippur and on Pesach Shavuot and Sukkot the three pilgrimage festivals These moments that mark the seasons of the year and the seasons of our lives awaken strong memories of relationships that shaped us sustained us and sometimes challenged us and of holy days we shared with loved ones and cherished friends When they are gone we can still affirm the beautiful and lasting values we learned from them and remember them in all their humanness We do that by coming together as a community of comfort and care From its inception a thousand years ago when it was prayed by Ashkenazic Jews on the morning of Yom Kippur Yizkor has had two profound themes God s embrace of the loved ones who are beyond our reach and our commitment to do the good deeds in their memory When we say Yizkor may God remember we proclaim our faith that those who have died have significance now and forever 147

YOM KIPPUR YIZKOR SERVICE Silent Prayer It is a fearful thing to love what death can touch A fearful thing to love hope dream to be to be and oh to lose A thing for fools this and a holy thing a holy thing to love For your life has lived in me your laugh once lifted me your word was gift to me To remember this brings a painful joy Tis a human thing love a holy thing to love what death has touched vvv Yeish kochavim she oram magia artzah rak kaasher heim atzmam avde v einam Yeish anashim shaziv zichram mei ir kaasher heim atzmam einam od b tocheinu Orot eileh hamav hikim b cheshkat halayil heim heim shemarim laadam et haderech ri Bn mxF W mi ak FM W i m nv r m d xW M wx d vx mi W p W i m pi e Ec a x W M xi n mx k f ei fW Epi k Fz A cFr m pi m nv r m d z MW g A mi wi da O d d N zFxF mi x OW m d m d li Nd Kx C d z mc l There are stars up above so far away we only see their light long long after the star itself is gone And so it is with people we have loved their memories keep shining ever brightly though their time with us is done But the stars that light up the darkest night these are the lights that guide us As we live our days these are the ways we remember vvv 155
YOM KIPPUR YIZKOR SERVICE If every life were like a drop of rain each of us a small solitary self then death would be for return back to the ocean whence we came Some raindrops soft and gentle as the showers of spring others hard and raging like summer storms of hail and thunder Each life a separate journey back to the beginning and back to God Picture God as a great ocean teeming with life in the ebb tide and flow where each raindrop begins and ends and begins again and again In the dance of waves we dance forever not I as I nor you as you and yet together rising and falling soft and peaceful hard and raging a dance we only dimly see to music we but faintly hear together and forever And if all this were so if God were like the ocean and each of us like rain and mist Would my heart not break at losing you Could the ocean contain my tears vvv 156
YOM KIPPUR YIZKOR SERVICE vvv Deep contemplation of death can elevate the soul it may even lead to peace of mind Above all it helps us see our lives in a truer light For all things that appear trivial in light of death are already without significance in themselves Annoyance that someone has slighted us envy over others achievements how inconsequential it all seems when viewed from the perpective of our mortality To pass each day solely in pursuit of material success this is life lived in what the poet calls the shadow of a shadow Rather when death is near may each of us carry this truth in our hearts I have contributed to the work of tikkun olam I have done my part in the struggle for goodness No act of kindness is too small to count no act of love is without power The world needs every heart and every hand and though we can never know the final outcome of our deeds the fruit of our service will be gathered in by those who come after us At this sacred moment reflecting on the impermanence of our lives let these words serve as affirmation of the quiet ways in which each of us joins the great quest of humankind The growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life and rest in unvisited tombs vvv 157
