Each Shabbat as I work my way through the seven psalms of the morning Pesukei D zimra service I try to recall my week where I was who I was with how I felt what I did Hillel Konigsburg Assistant Rabbi But in general I find it difficult to recall my actions of the previous week Consider for yourself where you were this time last week How were you feeling What did you have for breakfast We often go through life jumping from one thing to the next and we sometimes forget to reflect and remember where we once were If recalling our past week is a daunting task we can imagine the difficulty at recalling everything that happened to us in the past year In the liturgy for Rosh Hashanah we dedicate an entire section of one of our central prayers the musaf amida to Remembrances In this section we say to God Nothing is forgotten in Your awe inspiring presence nothing concealed from your gaze You remember every deed and nothing in creation can be hidden from You It is actually a remarkable theological idea that God not only sees everything but also never forgets anything For a human being who can t remember what he did last week let alone last year it is truly awe inspiring to consider a reality where everything is remembered Knowing that we can t remember everything and that what we do remember comes in little bits and pieces if given enough time the Jewish tradition provides us ample time to reflect on our past year and actions For the entire Jewish month of Elul the month leading up to the High Holidays we sound the shofar each morning and spend time remembering where we have been and what we have done When we give ourselves the time and space to reflect on the past we discover that different memories come back to us at different times Our tradition knows that we can t remember an entire year in a day rather we need to spend the time to allow our memories to resurface While it is indeed humbling to stand before a God who knows and remembers all our deeds I think our liturgy can also serve to inspire us Perhaps the liturgist isn t just trying to scare us into being more perfect in our actions but maybe the liturgist is trying to inspire us to recognize the power of remembering all the deeds of our past There is a certain power to history of not repeating the same missteps and learning from our mistakes There is insight from seeing the trajectory of our pasts and projecting them into the future Maybe as we acknowledge the Divine s ability to know all of the past it is a call for us to do the best we can to remember the past as well As we prepare for the High Holiday season this year we should slow down and give ourselves the time and space to reflect on all the events of our past year It might be helpful for us to go through old to do lists receipts emails or photographs We can look at where we ve been and the experiences we ve had Let us take the opportunity to look back and gain that perspective to show us how far we have come how much we have grown and all the things we have accomplished And then let us project that into the future to figure out where we have yet to go how we need to grow and what remains unfinished 4 B n ai To day Newsl etter I Au g Sep Oct 2017 Natalie Sarnat Executive Director It is hard to believe we are already preparing for another High Holiday season It is true what they say whoever they are the days are long but the years are short As I look to this new year of 5778 there are quite a few things I am excited about for our congregation We have expanded our youth programming for children of all ages Club 345 for 3rd 5th graders will have another fun year of social programming as we build strong comradery and Jewish identity among them The 5th grade will have the opportunity to participate in our Mitzvah Brigade a special social action program The 6th grade will work together to prepare for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs whether it is making tallit together or learning how to give a sermon Kadima had their epic adventure to Disney World for Yom Disney which was a huge success and will return for more fun and I am happy that we will be offering a confirmation program for 8th and 9th graders The confirmation program has been long requested by our congregants These are the highlights of our upcoming youth programs for the next generation those that will hopefully continue the traditions we so closely hold onto today No pressure As we consider the year before us I would be remiss if I did not mention a hope or a wish I have for each of our congregants For me it is simple I hope that every congregant can enjoy and revel in peace I am not so crazy to hope for Peace on Earth as Sandra Bullock so eloquently noted in Miss Congeniality Mine is a wish that I hope each congregant will interpret and receive as they need Peace in your choices peace in your home peace in your personal relationships I hope that every congregant can enjoy and revel in peace I am very excited about a new group which started at the end of last year Boomers This group which was formed by congregants coming to us and asking for more social programming specifically for them Congregants born in 1963 and earlier represent a large contingent in our community Boomers has a full fall schedule from Bingo Bourbon Babka to many classes and fun social get togethers B n a i Tod a y N e w s l e tte r I A u g S Meet Hannah Zale Our New Youth Advisor Alan Smirin president Last May I had a list of personal projects that I wanted to make Sharon Graetz happen in my first year as Youth Family Education Director teen led Shabbat morning service with Rabbi K and the Weber School was another first Followed by a cholent kiddush it was a beautiful morning to watch our young people lead service and enjoy cholent for many a first time The first idea was Coffee and Conversation a monthly series of speakers on hot topics including politics sports current news events the Jewish Film Festival and Atlanta Jewish a member s home It was a beautiful evening and different Shabbat traditions were shared Next year we will have several more in other neighborhoods with different age groups We had our first Casino
