Alethea Richter: Pulse SytemsApril 9 - May 5, 2025 PARKER Contemporary38 Hope Street, South Brisbane, 4101In response to our post-digital world, Alethea Richter’s Pulse Systems extends her engagement withdigital fluidity and fixed structures through screenprinting. By translating digital marks alongside hand-generated marks, Richter explores the ephemeral qualities of screens—fluctuating luminosity, transientcolours, and movement to create dynamic works of expansion and contraction, that resists staticinterpretation. Central to the print series is an exploration of process, play, material, and iteration bypushing against established structures and the insertion of the artist within this system. Richter beginswith the creation of six interchangeable matrices which are combined to investigate how sequencing, layering, and colour interactions affect outcomes. This interplay between boundaries and intuitivedecision-making reflects her broader inquiry into how much can be derived from within the parametersof a system, and the instability of presumed knowns. For Richter, screen-printing is both an inquiry and an evolving dialogue, where each layer and colourshift influences the next. Responding to what unfolds in the process, she negotiates control andunpredictability, allowing disruptions and subtle instabilities to shape the final composition. PulseSystems embraces rhythm and repetition within fixed parameters, mirroring the logic of digitalconstruction and dissemination while pushing against rigid structures. Through this material andconceptual exploration, Pulse Systems reconsiders how we experience images—how we see, interpret, and feel the digital world materialised in physical form. The compositions resist definitive resolution, instead encouraging dynamic engagement with the viewer—an invitation to slow down and navigate thelayered complexities of contemporary visual culture.Alethea has been selected for multiple group exhibitions including Disruption International PrintmakingExchange 2023 and the Highpoint Centre for Print International Juried Print Exhibition Stand Out Prints2022 and 2024, Minneapolis. She was awarded in 2022 with the Grey Hand Press Internship Award andwas shortlisted for the Iain Turnbull Memorial Prize in 2021. In 2023, Alethea was awarded theRavenswood Australian Women’s Emerging Artist Prize and selected for the Print Council of Australia2023 Print Commission.
