Catherine Daugherty Women’s Ministry Sunday we celebrated Palm Sunday, the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem only 5 days before He was nailed to a cross. Bob’s message echoed the ques-tions asked about Jesus that day, “Who is this man?” It is a question that can only be answered by you. Who is Jesus Christ to you? We pray that He is your Lord and Savior. The music was great as always. Jill Johnson sang “Holy Ground” and our New Life Band concluded our service with an arrangement of “This Is Our God.” I was honored to be asked to inform the church that the elders have asked Bob Kapp to lead New Life at the conclusion of my ministry next January. Bob was hired last fall as our executive minister with responsibilities of organizing and expanding our ministries and overseeing the day-to-day operations. Bob and his wife, Joyce, moved to The Villages and he began his ministry with us. He had not been here very long when it became evident that his ministry skills extended far beyond organization and administrative work. So after much prayer and discussion, an invitation was extended to Bob to become the next Senior Minister. He accepted. I said Sunday that I believe he and Joyce are a great fit at New Life. The transition of Senior Ministers at a church can be complicated and difficult. That will not be the case here. I am confi-dent this transition will go smoothly. As I said Sunday, I ask you to give him the opportunity to put into place his ideas for New Life. Nothing will make Connie and I happier than for Bob and Joyce to have a long, successful ministry. It stands for Rest in Peace, a reference to the fact that life is over and one has come to the point of rest from its toils. At the end of the Looney Tunes cartoons, Porky Pig would appear on the screen and say, “That’s All Folks”. In other words its over, there is nothing more, it is time to pack up and go home. Mel Blanc the voice of Porky Pig has that phrase on his headstone, “That’s all folks”. Perhaps that is his way of saying “My work is done, it is time to rest in peace.” One might be tempted to interpret the final words of Jesus from the cross in that way. After all, He has just declared, “It is finished.” Maybe in this final phrase we hear Jesus anticipating a rest from all He has endured in his 30 years of life as God’s Messiah and especially the agonies of the cross. I don’t think so. In the words, “It is finished” Jesus declares that his redemptive work is complete and He takes his place at the right hand of God, “…but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God.” (Hebrews 10:12) Jesus then commits Himself into His father’s hands, not in anticipation of rest, but in anticipation of a different work, interceding for those He has redeemed. “Christ Jesus is the One who died, but even more, has been raised; He also is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us.” – Romans 8:34 Scan the QR code with your phone camera to submit a prayer request!
