Karen JohnsonPresident WMHS FoundationMichele MartzPresident UPMC Western MarylandThis year, we mark our fith anniversary as part of the world-class UPMC network! I am filled with pride for what we have accomplished since our integration and so grateful to the extraordinary people who make it happen here every day. Together, our goal is to improve the lives of our friends, families, and neighbors throughout the communities we serve. Our teams work seamlessly with UPMC specialists and cutting-edge medicine to deliver the best care close to home. In 2024, we: n Celebrated our 5,000th open-heart surgery n Observed 15 years in our beautiful state-of-the-art campus on Willowbrook Road n Launched the $2.6 million Trans-Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) program n Marked our 2,000th robotic surgery n Debuted telemedicine services in stroke, neurology, and endocrinology and facilitated 1,800 visits n Forged new and lasting relationships with area high schools and colleges to help with job recruitment. We know there are areas where we need to improve, and we remain committed to addressing them. We have added new providers in gastroenterology, pulmonology, and other clinical areas. We continue to invest in transformative cancer treatments so our patients don’t need to leave town for their care. And in this report, our Foundation features the vital improvements our Emergency Department is implementing. How grateful I am for the partnership of this Foundation, committed to forging solutions. From our UPMC family to yours, thank you for trusting us with your care!Friends,Each One’s Life Touches S Many OthersEach One’s Life Touches S Many OthersCOVER photo: UPMC Western Maryland Emergency Department sta – from let, first row: Wendy Helms, clinical director; Dr. Rameen Shafiei, DO, director of Emergency Medicine. Can I share a personal story with you? Many years ago, as I was considering potential career paths, I was naïve. Like many, I wanted to change the world. I got a degree in social work, and then a master’s in business administration, and for over 20 years, worked with children in dicult situations. Honestly, I wasn’t happy with the dierence we were making. Children and people hold promise; systems and bureaucracies can squelch that. When I came to the WMHS Foundation, I had no inkling that I would be able to sit here today, with my heart full of gratitude, rewarded every day for the dierence we are making for our patients. How can I express how gratifying it is to help a hospice patient spend their final days in comfort in one of our hospice suites? ... to have the funding to pay a utility bill for a patient suering with cancer? ... to see the satisfaction of Ray King or Junior Collins when their eorts result in significant donations for cancer and dialysis? Our impacts make my heart sing. Working alongside this Foundation sta – Lisa, Sharon, Amanda and Sandy – is a git. And to sit in a Foundation board meeting where every member truly cares about our work and our community is both humbling and exhilarating. Thank you so much for joining me in this journey! I assure you that we are doing extraordinary things for countless individuals and families when they need it most.As you read this gratitude report, please know that, together, we really are changing the world, one patient at a time. I guess I got my wish ater all!

2WMHS FOUNDATIONStrength. Competence. Experience. They are a team of nearly 100 specially trained medical professionals. With an on-site complement of 30 or so at any given time, they handle nearly 34,000 emergencies here every year. They are our friends and family and they care deeply about keeping you alive when you come to the UPMC WMD Emergency Department.Dr. Rameen Shafiei, a Cumberland native, leads the charge, his high energy and big personality a good fit for the Emergency Department (ED). Born to a neurologist and an ED nurse, he earned board certification as an emergency medicine physician and came home to practice. Along the way he married his local sweetheart, now a nurse in Same Day Surgery, and they have two beautiful children, a 5-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. Their community roots – past, present, and future – only underscore his sincere drive to have the best medical care possible locally. He says, “I know the standards I put in place, the achievements we’ve worked toward, will eventually impact my loved ones. We’re doing unto others as we would want them to do for us.”“As an emergency doctor, you have to be good at everything, like a multi-tool Swiss army knife. In a rural setting, you learn to navigate your system and provide the best care possible at home.” Shafiei works alongside Clinical Director Wendy Helms to do just that. Wendy, a master’s prepared nurse, has dedicated 24 years to emergency medicine and echoes Rameen’s heartfelt commitment to our area. “It’s important to me, to all of us, to make a difference in our hometown – we have friends and family in this community.” Each day, they oversee the care of nearly 100 patients, each one beginning with an immediate evaluation, utilizing a process called triage. Triage enables the staff to determine the urgency of each illness or injury (see chart below) and ensures that life-threatening conditions take priority. Unlike many places, an Emergency Department is never “first come, first served.” The UPMC Western Maryland Emergency Department carries an additional designation: Level III Trauma Center. State-certified trauma center staff are trained and prepared to respond immediately to life-threatening situations; specialized surgeons must be on site within 30 minutes. So critical is the window immediately following a trauma, that it has been termed “the golden hour” and can easily mean the difference between life and death. The presence of the UPMC Western Maryland Trauma Center – the only one within 60 miles – makes an enormous impact in saving lives. With patient volumes and a full spectrum of serious and life-threatening conditions, triage is a never-endingjuggling act. Add to that the challenges of our day –nationwide nursing shortages, the current opioid pandemic, and patients who use the ED for non-urgent care – and EDs across the country are overflowing. Dr. Shafiei, Wendy, and their team are working diligently to manage patient throughput and ED wait times, and at Western Maryland, several of the root causes are being addressed. When Scott Bingaman, a local son, started college in Frostburg, he already knew he would be a doctor oneday. “I think I knew it from the time I was a kid,” he says.As a sophomore in the pre-med track, he was able to work as a scribe in our Emergency Department to gain clinical hours. Scott was attracted to the responsive, flexible environment – staff were constantly adapting to the ever-changing needs around them. “I just fell in love with it,” he says. Up to that point, he had no concept that emergency medicine was a separate field, he tells us. But scribing for the medical staff there convinced him this was where he belonged. Dr. Shafiei was a mentor to Scott, applauding his hard work. He wrote Scott’s letter of recommendation for medical school – the same school that Dr. Shafiei had attended. And he referred Scott to the Foundation’s scholarship program.Through the Ted A. Wolfe Physician Scholarship, the WMHS Foundation is able to provide generous support to outstanding local medical school students, who contract to return and practice in Allegany County, a win for both the student and our local area. Scott Bingaman is among three students currently selected to receive this distinction.During the last two decades, the Foundation has awarded $1.7 million to healthcare professionals through an array of scholarship funds. Today, dozens of nurses, doctors, therapists, and support staff provide expert care at UPMC Western Maryland as a direct result of the Foundation’s support. “I look forward to having Scott join us in the Emergency Department,” says Dr. Shafiei. “He’s an exceptional individual, very intelligent and easy to work with. He’ll be a great addition to our team.” As for Scott, his wife Jessie already works as a nurse in our Emergency Department, and he feels right at home among the staff where he spent four years as a scribe. Next spring, when he finishes his residency, Dr. Scott Bingaman will bring his talents home to UPMC Western Maryland, thanks largely to the generous investment of your Foundation. Would you support scholarships, so that others like Scott can return home to care for our community? In fact, the UPMC Western Maryland ED was cited as having the second most improved patient satisfaction score across all 42 UPMC hospitals for 2024. While agreeing that there is still work to be done, Dr. Shafiei and Wendy shared some of the solutions they have implemented. Vertical Care ensures patients are seen by a provider within 30 minutes of arrival, with tests and treatments being initiated in the waiting room if necessary. At high-census times, diagnostic testing is streamlined using pre-set clinical protocols, as in the story below: Allie showed up with a painful headache. Young and otherwise healthy, she had gone first to urgent care, who sent her to the ED with concerns. Upon initial evaluation, her condition appeared non-life threatening. Vital signs were stable. But the concern from urgent care was a red flag, so the predetermined protocol was followed and a CT scan was ordered. Within ten minutes, an intracranial hematoma – a brain bleed – was revealed. She was immediately ushered into the operating room, saving her life. Thanks to the generosity of the WMHS Auxiliary, the ED utilizes bedside ultrasound (rarely available in community hospitals) which offers immediate scans. Critical conditions, such as fluid in the chest or abdomen, are caught early. A new Admission Discharge Unit cares for inpatients cleared for discharge but delayed by transportation or other needs. This unit frees up inpatient beds for patients being admitted through the ED. Resources of the UPMC network improve care as the ED accesses expertise in pediatric specialties and specialized training for nurses. “When we integrated in 2020, we began sharing ideas and practices between all the EDs,” Rameen notes. UPMC Children’s is ranked in the Top Ten nationally. A new ED TeleStroke program utilizes neurologists who provide immediate consultations for the assessment and treatment of stroke patients. “It’s a challenging environment,” says Shafiei, “but we are constantly trying to find ways to improve and better meet our patients’ needs.” They are strong, competent, experienced friends and family who care deeply about this community… and you. Whether triaging and treating critical patients or spending time with family, Dr. Rameen Shafiei has every reason to be committed to the very best care for his community. Shown here are Dr. Shafiei, his wife Danielle, their son Reza and daughter Soriyah. Will you consider a git to support emergency care? See page 9. Scott Bingaman (right) returns as an emergency doctor at UPMC WMD next summer, when he finishes his residency.
4WMHS FOUNDATIONFilled Filled ttoo OverfloOverflowiwingngFilled Filled ttoo OverfloOverflowiwingngAt thirty-one, Mitchell Mast was the picture of health, a Grantsville dairy farmer who had been working his family’s 450-acre tract since he was old enough to trail alongside his father. Now an athlete, coach, husband, and father of his own young children, he knew his priorities – faith, family, and farm – and was living them each day. How could he have known that all of that could change in an instant?Through a sudden fall in November 2023, Mitchell cracked his skull, snapping the fragile right temporal bone over his ear. An artery bleed immediately filled the narrow space between brain and bone, and Mitchell suffered a series of seizures as he lay all but lifeless on the floor.Thirty minutes away in Cumberland, Neurosurgeon Dr. Kheder Ashker received an on-call page: prepare for a patient with a traumatic brain injury, quickly declining, intubated, and 100% non-responsive. Dr. Ashker was in the Emergency Department in five minutes, he tells us, and the OR team was already prepped and waiting. He underscored how critical each moment is in this type of injury. “We are trained for this,” he said. “We know For three hours, Dr. Ashker and his team worked rigorously to save Mitchell’s life. Their original plan to cut away only a small area above his ear had been dashed when they found that Mitchell’s blood had begun to clot. To relieve the pressure building inside the skull, the surgical team would need to make a significantly larger incision. The brain had begun to collapse under pressure, and as surgeon and team worked against time, they cut away a large enough section to siphon the trapped blood. At last, the brain bleed was stemmed, and a great load lifted. In the twenty-four-hour period following surgery, his wife remembered the many ICU nurses who were attentive to his need, but Mitchell remembered nothing. He was holding his own body temperature, a good sign. The surgical team planned to extubate him, another positive step. But in his confusion, Mitchell was disoriented and combative with the clinical staff – a natural response to brain trauma – and he tried repeatedly to get up and leave – to get back to work, he told them. He remained in critical care as they waited and watched. At last, as the days went by, Mitchell awoke more lucid. “My first real memory following the accident was hearing what to do.” At any given time, two surgical teams are on standby and ready to do what is necessary to save a life, he said.Mitchell’s wife, Sara, rushed in just 10 minutes after the ambulance. Grounded in faith, she reached out to family and friends for prayer and journaled each step, sharing through Facebook. Her first post read, “When I arrived, he was already getting a CT scan. Thanks be to God for the swiftness of the staff where he fell, the wisdom to call the rescue squad, the promptness of the trauma unit, and the presence of one of the area’s best neurosurgeons.” Sara was struck that the surgical team began taking care of her husband before they even knew his name. Mitchell & Sara Mast are grateful to be back to their busy lives ater a fall nearly claimed his life.
ANNUAL GRATITUDE REPORT 20245Dr. Ashker’s voice, telling me I was lucky to be alive,” said Mitchell. He remembered he and Sara had bought new cows and wondered if he still needed to go pick them up. He was able to take a call from his children, all four of them talking at once and reassured to hear their father’s voice. A mere five days from his near-fatal fall, Mitchell was released to go home. Sara was overjoyed and shared the news with family and friends. “He is doing so well!” she said. “I reviewed his medical reports – from the ER, OR, and ICU – and I am overwhelmed all over again by just how close he was to such a different outcome.” As a Level III Trauma Center, the only one in a 60-mile radius, UPMC Western Maryland is equipped to respond immediately to a life-and-death situation like Mitchell faced. Last year alone, UPMC treated 1,128 trauma patients – 252 with traumatic brain injury. It’s been more than a year since the accident which nearly took his life. Last September, family and friends hosted a picnic to celebrate his recovery. Dr. Ashker shared how wonderful it was to be part of such a joyous occasion, among nearly 300 people. “I’m glad I was on call when he needed me,” said Dr. Ashker, “when he needed us.”Mitchell marvels that he was given another chance to see his children grow. One day, he hopes, his faith will become theirs. Through seasons of plenty or want, these young, bright-eyed children – Malachi, Amy, Libby and Micah – have their strong, healthy father back, thanks to the responsive skill of the WMHS Trauma Center, Dr. Ashker, and the surgical team at UPMC Western Maryland. In Memory of Thomas B. Finan, Jr.Foundation board ocerand Legacy donorOur hearts are grieved by the tremendous loss of a dear friend and colleague in April 2024. Tom Finan faithfully served on our board for over 20 years and lent his wisdom and dedication to many organizations across our community throughout his lifetime. Notably, Tom served as co-chair in the 1994–1996 eort to create the Western Maryland Health System from the merger of Memorial and Sacred Heart Hospitals. The caliber of healthcare in this community would not be what it is today without his strategic, unflinching direction. Tom and his wife Mary Kay have been dedicated supporters of UPMC Western Maryland since its inception and joined the Foundation’s Legacy Society in 2018 as founding members. With his resolute commitment to this community and his generous esteem for all who knew him, truly Tom’s life was a life well lived. Karen Johnson noted, “I knew I could rely on Tom’s wise counsel, his measured responses, and his astute guidance. He took his role as a board member and leader seriously, asking prudent questions and shaping the trajectory of our Foundation with quiet, firm strength. I was taken aback by the humility of this highly accomplished man – he told me once that his job was to make mine easier, and he certainly did that. I felt his support and was stunned at his loss; the impact cannot be overstated.” Tom’s legacy in this community will be felt for many years to come – through education and economic development, and in support of our local healthcare. Thank you, Tom, for pouring your life into our community!Dr. Ashker (right) pauses with the Mast family at our annual Foundation THANKSgiving event. You can support lifesaving trauma care.
