Introduction

In the atlas of the alternate world, we will introduce you to the continent of Tripolar.  Here, the countries of Keith Cox, Colton Kennedy, Tyler Thrasher, Walter Berthelson, and Jeffrey Walker are scattered throughout the continent.  We will show you what we have done throughout the year in regards to our alternate world.  We will include the many aspects of Human Geography to inform you about the subject so you can better understand our presentation.  Also in this presentation, we will show you in creative ways, how our continent and the people on it have evolved over time through different transition stages to become like any other continent on Earth today.

World Continents

In the world of Nunca, there are six continents. They are respectively named in order from left to right: Florin, Hruska, PB&J, Concord, La Cloche, and Tripolar

World Regions

In the world of Nunca, the regions located on the continents separated in ways much like the real world. These countries separated based on physical barriers, political barriers, and belief barriers.

In the made-up world of Nunca, the early continents looked a lot like they did on earth. The continents started off in a large concentrated mass. This alternate Pangea however broke apart very differently than the real Pangea did. Instead of breaking apart into the current continents of the real world. The continents of Nunca split off from a center point and formed their own continents. These movements are due to a continual force inside the earth's crust.

Tectonic Plate Movements

Climate Maps

On the continent of Tripolar, there are three major climate zones as well as some subsections to those. The top portion of Tripolar is comprised of hot and tropical climates. These include the desert, the tropical rainforest, and the savannah. the second portion and middle of the continent is comprised of the cooler and milder climates. This area encompasses the marshes, the grasslands, and the rainforest. The last area on Tripolar is made of the colder climates: the deciduous forest and the polar region.

Topography Map

On the continent of Tripolar, we have a varied landscape. The top of the continent is mostly high mountains and plateaus. The middle of the continent lowers out and at points goes below sea level. These points are shown as the small lakes and the crater that is on the bottom edge of the continent.

Transportation Infrastructure Map

On Tripolar, transportation is open. Trade among the settlements is encouraged and is a very important part of all the economies on the island. Between each settlement there is a straight path, whether it be a road or a set of railroads. In each settlement there is definitely a way to get around the island.

Linguistic Diffusion Map

On the continent of Tripolar, there is three linguistic hearths. One located on the settlement of Panja. Another located in Lugar. While the third is located in Altuve. This third hearth is the most active as it has had the largest spread. This hearth spread to the countries of Brightfield and Xander.

Land Use Map

On this map, the different resources are shown. These resources go from rice and wheat to titanium and oil. Each settlement has their own set of resources. The crops each settlement has is based on their environment and climate. The more rare resources, like the metals and fossil fuels, were drawn from Mrs. Ybarra and have now become one of the more prominent parts of the settlements economy.

Population Density Map

This map shows the dispersion of people across a place, and the density of those people there. The population dot map has the majority of people in cities rather than in rural landscapes because of the stage our countries are in on the demographic transition model. The majority of people are centered around the capital cities, and the cities that have the most people are centered around places with the best agriculture and environment to provide for the country.

Political Boundaries Map

Using conquest points and a lot of negotiating, the borders of our countries were created. After doing so, this map was created to represent the size of each country. Altuve was able to gain the largest amount of land but that does not mean that it was of the highest quality. Much of it is in the arctic region. Panja gained a good size piece of land and it is mostly coastal region. Lugar has the upper right corner of the continent and it is mostly a jungle region. Brightfield has the upper part of the continent but it is mostly desert region. Xander has the small plot of land on the right side of the continent and is mostly coastal region. If the border of Panja is crossed there is no consequence. If the borders of Brightfield are crossed they will be sent into concentration camps and will work there until they die. If the borders of Xander are crossed, they will be sent to prison for a maximum of 30 years. If the borders of Lugar are crossed you will be sent into slavery. If the borders of Altuve are crossed you will be enslaved until death. Each border was negotiated for a specific purpose and each country benefited in its own way.

Week 5 Reflection

The settlement has begun finding more resources around its linear village.  During explorations of caves along the coast, they discovered large deposits of natural gas.  They were able to burn it for candle light, and easier fires to keep away predators.  While they were trying to build with sedimentary rocks, they discovered streaks of titanium throughout the rocks and began to extract and purify it.  They then used it to craft weapons and armor, stronger than anything they previously had.  Also, in igneous rocks, the people noticed pretty, white metals known as platinum and used it to create fine jewelry and decorations.  Other resources in their around their settlement were foods, like bananas and jack fruit, located in the jungle.  They had always seen them, but animals that they noticed eating them, caused them to start harvesting that.  They also noticed food along the coast side of their village, and learned how to fish.

Because of the abundant resources, they set up an oligarchical style of government.  They divided land into sections based on resources, and gave large, land owning people control over a certain resource.  They would come together and make decisions affecting the village as a whole, but smaller decisions could be made by individual leaders of resource sections, affecting only that section.  This is a federal government because it maintains a large central government, but keeps smaller control over sections.  The large government will come together and periodically decide if changes in boundaries need to be made in order to gain more resources, and they will decide the new distribution of the resources amongst their people.  They also collect taxes from each leader who has collected from their section.  The individual leaders make decisions based upon how to harvest and gain resources efficiently, for their resource, and they decide how many people they need doing what jobs.  The large government also decides the uses for all non-edible resources by voting on individually proposed ideas.  The central government came together and sent out a new village down river from a branch off a few miles away.  They set up a village along the river, about 100 miles away from a neighboring settlement, so the new village became a walled village.  It has a similarly styled government; an oligarchy, resource based, but the central government from the original village has deciding vote on major decisions of the new village.

Citizens of the village are all people born within the boundaries, granted, they have one eye witness, who is already a citizen, that can back up their claim.  Anybody that wants to become a citizen must work in the government for five years and swear allegiance to the government.  Another way is to swear allegiance, and pay a 10% increase on taxes for the next three years to become an instant citizen.  A person becomes an adult at the age of 14, and takes on all responsibilities of becoming a member of a section that works to provide the government with resources.  The age is low because the average life expectancy is 45, so people are expected to have kids by age 20 at the latest.  More responsibilities of an adult are to join the army and pay taxes of money as well as 5% of what they harvest.

Week 6 Reflection

At the start of the industrial revolution, my settlement is able to produce armored boats, and bolts for building things.  I can also use titanium to make cars and we could start building guns and use titanium for the bullets and parts on the guns.  We also start testing with explosives.  We can make large factories and using natural gas we can make production mechanized and more efficient.  Platinum is used to make jewelry.  The production of cars and boats from titanium is mechanized in factories.  The agglomeration of industries includes fur trapping places near textile mills.  There are factories that produce boats and cars centered around where titanium is naturally found.  It is also nearby natural gas drills so that they can provide quick energy to power the factories.  The major industrial belt is east of the settlement, almost to the coastline because there are sedimentary rocks that can contain titanium and natural gas is also found near there.

The new industry in this region has caused my settlement to shift into the third stage of the graphic transition model.  This means that industry has started and many new things are being invented.  Also, birthrate is getting lower, but life expectancy is increasing because of new technology.

The following countries are all going through stage three on the graphic transition model.

1.Costa Rica

2.India

3.Ecuador

4.Mexico

5.Columbia

Ecuador is most like my settlement because we are both going through stage three on the demographic transition model, but they are also in mostly the same situation as me.  They are situated next to the coastline, and have a jungle environment, too.  They also are situated over next to many different rivers, and my settlement has a large river that provides for it as well.  The population pyramid is shown below.

Rural Settlement (Agricultural Village)

Urban Settlement (Manufacturing Belt)

In real world industrial revolutions, many men worked in factories, but also women and children were used as cheap labor.  This caused less children to be born therefore creating a lower birthrate.  In my settlement, men would be the main source for hard labor and working in the fields, but we would use women and children to do the work in factories and textile mills.  This would allow us to continue harvesting natural resources, but also create things with them.  In real world societies, social life began changing.  People had less time, and women did not stay home throughout the day to take care of the children.  This caused movements in society concerning rights of women to do what men could.  Power shifted from men to more of an equal stance, but not yet fully equal.  This also caused a big gap to form between the wealthy and poor, and made a much smaller group of middle class citizens.  In my region, because of women and children doing equal labor as men, they started feeling empowered, and men felt their power was threatened.  Living conditions became much worse and there was much poverty because factories barely pay enough to survive.  This caused a huge increase in development, but many people suffered because of it.

Week 7 Semi-Periphery Country

In order for my country to get out of semi-periphery and fully become a core country it needs to lower the birth rates.  To do this, it uses a policy much like the One Child Policy in China.  This allows for birth rates to decrease by punishing those who have more than one child, leading people to stop having as many children.  Now, people mostly die from diseases caught in the workplace. Because most people work in factories and other harsh environments, when people get sick, everyone catches it.  In the country, the gender roles have changed and more and more women can work without persecution.  Many women are actually coming into the workplace as lower grade jobs to fill the gaps needed in factories and other industrial jobs.  It is much harder for women to have kids and still advance in their career, so the birth rates have dropped drastically.  For those that do still have many kids, or any at all, they have to balance their work life with their family life, and will end up having to hire people to take care of the kids.  Below are pie charts that represent the percentage of people and GDP in each section of the economy.

Image result for tractor plowing a fieldImage result for watering a large field

These pictures represent the ways agriculture is done in the country.  Because it is a stage three country on the verge of being stage 4, they have developed many technologies during the industrial period that have allowed them to more efficiently plow and water their fields and sustain larger and larger agriculture.

Image result for law firmImage result for at&t

Services in the country include things like law firms and energy and data providers.  These have shown up and switched the market away from agriculture towards services, retail and industry.  It isn’t to the point of research and bigger development as seen in quaternary and quinary stages, but it does have other services, such as the ones previously mentioned.

The information in the pie charts above impacts the population density in that many more people have moved to urban and industrializing areas rather than stay in rural areas and be a part of agriculture.  This change has affected the population density to center around the major cities so on a map it looks like high concentrated areas around cities and scattered densities everywhere else.

The population map is below.

This change has also affected the urban model of the country.  It is now following the concentric zone model because it has a large inner CBD surrounded by a large ring of industries and factories that the CBD relies on.  Outside of that are the rings for lower class, middle class, then high class families.  The reason for this though is to account for the huge reliance on industry and to be able to build around it for importance and accessibility.  The urban model is included below.

Lugar is not accepting multinational corporations or help building infrastructure because it won’t have to share any profits it makes.  My country is going to be self-sufficient because it will be harder to start these things up, it can then keep everything it makes later on once infrastructure and other organizations are formed.  My country is involved in Clojam Navy, which is a supranational organization.  This is similar to real world supranational organizations such as Navies that are like the united nations peace keeping organization.  It is like that because this is a way for us to keep peace among nations.

Spatial Distrubtion Model

Feature Concept

Cities and Urban Land Use

This is a diagram of Chicago, and the Concentric Zone Model is used to represent the actual layout of Chicago.  In the CBD, there are labeled major businesses that are in the Chicago loop. In the zone of transition, there are the factories and industries that are from the CBD.  The CBD is located along the coast because one major economical factor in Chicago is the imports and exports from the harbor.  In the next ring of working class families, are the neighborhoods close to the transition zone.  They are typically poorer than most others, and the crime in those neighborhoods are higher than in other neighborhoods.  The next ring after that is for middle class families in better neighborhoods that are further from the CBD.  The last ring was the outer edge of Chicago and was the suburban zone with better neighborhoods and more wealthy areas.

Future of Lugar

Lugar will advance into stage 4 and as technology increases, we will be less reliant on agriculture, and more on technology and research development. This plays an important role in the world as Lugar will try to increase its trading capabilities to trade further and with more continents in Nunca

Connection to Mexico

Mexico is very similar to my country because they are both in stage three of the demographic transition model.  They also are both still somewhat reliant on agriculture, but are advancing into stage four and gaining more industry and advancing their economies into more research and development.

  • I would like to live in my world because I created it and I think it would be fun to do so.

  • Someone could write a novel about people living in my country because it is both a place of great adventure and also great suffering and pain.

  • The most fun part of this project is the creation of the different models to represent the different things that were learned

  • The most interesting part of this project was the learning about the spatial distribution

  • The hardest part of this project was finding real world examples to correspond with the fictional setup of the countries

Personal Evaluation

Panja

A long time ago, there was a settlement along the coast of continent Tripolar. The people of this settlement live as long as 50 years. This lifespan is due to the amount of natural disasters around this settlement. Since the settlement is on the coast, there are hurricanes that will blow into the coast and wreck havoc on the people and their town. There is also a river that runs through this small town that provides fresh water and fish. This however also makes the city very susceptible to floods since the river runs through the town. Children in this town become adults at the age of 18. They become responsible for voting on officials to represent them, supplying for themselves, and also contributing to the society. The responsibilities don’t stop there however. There is also the action of having to train under someone to learn a trade.

This settlement has a republic government. The republic’s members are called “the Law Council This settlement’s republic is very liberal and open to change. The members of this government are elected by a small group of elders. These elder’s identity stays secret in order for the vote to remain anonymous. This republic has control of the trade going in and out of the settlement. The government however has little control over what happens to the resources other than the trade. The Law Council can not decide what is made and how much is brought up.

T

Week 5 Reflection

This trade is the crops, resources, and the metals in and around the settlement. The settlement has a large amount of farmland on the outsides of the city. As well as expansive mines in the plains. These mines were discovered accidentally by a farmer on the outskirts. This farmer thought they were the burial place of the elders of times passed until he fell into one. He then found out about the vast riches in the caves. Finally, there is very productive oil rig on the outskirts of the cove. This rig was discovered due to a failed cliffside mining operation. The miners that discovered the oil reserve were looking for another place to find metal and thought about digging down. They instead found oil. These metals were used to make tools and structures around the settlement. The oil was used to power lamps and fuel the houses in the settlement.

This settlement made a second town closer to the mines and farmlands to help transport and distribute the resources. This settlements trade is heavily monitored by the government to ensure there is no illegal trade out of the settlement. This settlement also has a very strict law system to ensure no rebellions of the workers and citizens.

Week 6 Reflection

1a. The Industrialization

Now that Panja is industrializing, my people are moving forward at an alarming rate. My people are harnessing platinum to make jewelry, and are using oil to help run machines. My people are also very good at processing food and have developed a very successful industry out of it.

1b. The Rise of the Machines

My industry that is mechanized is the production of jewelry. This production requires machines to melt down the ore and pour that into a mold that is later shaped into the desired state. My people have also made machines to help do minor tasks in food processing. Such as sifting through grains, and grinding meat.

1c. Agglomeration for days

The agglomeration works in the following way. The food production centers are close to the crops that they process. While the more industrial facilities are closer to the oil supply. This is because the necessary materials needed to run these industries needed to be located close by so that it is the most efficient.

1d. The Industrial Belt

The oil industry and other main industries are located along the west because that is where the resources are located. The food industry is located between both of my settlements, it the north-east area. This is, because the crops are grown in that area and located far enough from the other industries so that they are far enough away so that they aren’t polluted.

2. 3rd Stage

This great industrial revolution has gotten us into the 3rd stage of the Demographic Transition. It has moved us up by giving us less of a need to have more children to work the farms as many have moved into the cities to find work at the industrial areas. The death rate has also dropped due to medical breakthroughs.

3. Real World Examples: Costa Rica, Mexico, India, Ecuador, Columbia

4. In the Real World

The real world place that best fits the urban side of Panja is Mexico. I chose this for the following reasons. In both pyramids, the bottom is rather wide but quickly thins in the early childhood years to teenager years. The next part of both pyramids is a large work force like blob that encompasses most of the pyramids shape. The pyramid then shrinks back down at the elderly ages.

IMG_5922.JPG484-2016.png

The real world place that most resembles my rural area is Ecuador. This is because, like Ecuador, my region starts out with a very high birth rate. This high birth rate bleeds into the children, making them a larger part of the population. Then both start to have a bottleneck effect as they thin and thin until they reach the more elderly ages.

IMG_5923.JPG218-2016.png

5. Impact

The people in these real world areas used many different people during the stages of the industrial revolution. In the early stages, everyone worked, from the youngest children to the elderly parents. This is not true in my culture. In my culture, there is a designated working force between the ages of 20-64. There is however the similarity of the work hours. In both the real world and my culture there is the very long workday. From 6 in the morning to 6 at night. This fact is true for both my cultures. The social aspects of the real world and my culture differ significantly however. The real world is more focused on making the products and making the big buck. Contrary to this, my culture is more focused on the people and making sure they have enough to get through their lives.

Week 7 Reflection

My country has a column like population pyramid (Shown at right). It demonstrates that the population is starting to reach a leveling point. Not many older folks are dying and the birth rate has steadily declined to what it now is. There has also been an increase in the mature population, the population between 25-60. This has led to a longer lasting and bigger work force for my country.

IMG_6107.JPG

The birth rates are the way they are because the people in my country have realized something. If I don’t have a kid, I don’t have to pay as much as I would have to. So, they have significantly avoided children. Many people also just do not have the space or money to have a child so they have avoided it.

The main cause of death in my country is either natural, like they are getting too old to live, or from disease. My people have furthered the use of medicine so that it is almost like what we have today. It has enabled them to live to their full age and gotten rid of most epidemics. However, there are still many deaths due to diseases that don’t have a cure yet, such as cancer.

The gender roles in my country are pretty lax. The workforce welcomes both men and women. Women are able to raise families and still advance in the work force. These women who want to raise a family and are having kids are given leave for the first couple months after giving birth. Then after this business goes as usual. These women are given the same number of opportunities as the men and both genders succeed greatly in the economy.

meta-chart (2).pngmeta-chart (2).png

The graph on the left shows the percentage of the population in each industry.  The graph on the left shows the GDP provided by each industry. The impact these graphs have is quite simple. Most of the dic length GDP is made in industry so more people are located around the industrial zones in my country. The rest of my population is more centered in the business district. The service, quinary, and quaternary industries are focused here. The last portion of my population is found in on the outskirts where large farms are located. The population has grown more urban and chosen to live in the downtown area. As shown by the map below, the populations have mainly shifted to the city centers and urban areas.

Abstract Explanation

In my, abstract to demonstrate my topic, I drew two pictures. I drew an illustration of Earth that shows two pull factors and two areas that have a large concentration of the population of Earth. The second illustration is of the continent of Tripolar. On this image the settlement of Panja is highlighted and shown. This is because it is the settlement that has the most appeal to it and one of the larger population concentrations on the island. This city is one of the most developed on the continent and has caused the move of many to it. This is the topic I have decided to talk about. The movement of people in modern day is essential in many ways. One of the reasons this movement is essential is because it shapes how a country works. A larger population can lead to a greater work force and more production in the country. This increased production can lead to even more people coming to the country. These factors that draw people to a country are referred to as pull factors. These factors can lead to a large movement of people or a concentration of people moving from one area to another, otherwise known as an emigration. These emigrations can cause the country to suddenly swell in size and help them reach a new era. To go back to my picture, it is demonstrating the similarities of the pull factors and the pull the countries have on others in their respective world. The made-up world has many of the same migration patterns and population densities that can be seen in the real world. People often gather around a world superpower or a country that has a lot of power and manufacturing capability. This leads to people moving from less developed countries to more developed countries. This leads to an unforeseen impact on those countries. Those less developed countries are now staying less developed because they lack the manpower to and resources to develop. This is also true in the made up world. People are moving from less developed countries to more developed countries like Panja. This has led to an uneven population distribution, or differing concentrations of people in countries.

Future of Panja

Panja has developed quite well compared to the surrounding countries. In the near future, it is highly probable that Panja will move more of resources to the rest of the world and its neighboring countries in order to make its presence felt. It will also try and expand its relations with countries on the other continents.

Spatial Distribution and Migration Stimulus

This settlement that is shown is a very bland farming and mining colony. This blandness leads to a boredom in the teenage and young adults. These bored individuals will leave the settlements and never return. Most of these go to the famed settlement Altuve for it is one of the closest settlements and one of the most interesting.

Personal Evaluation

  • I would like to live in my world because the conditions of it are quite nice and seem to be quite nice and enjoyable

  • Someone could write a novel about people living in my country because it has many positive elements  as well as very enjoyable living conditions

  • The most fun part of this project is the discussion and negotiation of the borders and trade routes

  • The most interesting part of this project is the fact that we were able to go from a small tribe of natives to a emerging superpower in the world we made up

  • The hardest part of this project was the development of all the different moving parts, such as the development of a whole new language

Brightfield

Week 5 Reflection

The settlement of Brightfield will have a series of regulations and policies to keep running. First off, the settlement has chosen to be a republic and elect its officials. This makes it a federalist government. This will work best because the citizens can choose the people they feel are best to run the settlement. To elect these officials, you must be a citizen. To obtain citizenship, one must have lived in Brightfield for two full years and have a job that contributes towards the economy. Each citizen is expected to vote and pay their taxes. If a citizen fails to meet these requirements, they will be fined or jailed. To be a full citizen, you have to be an adult. To be an adult, a person must be at least 16 years of age. It has been chosen this way because children start working very young in mines and in the fields. Once they reach 16 years of age, they should have enough experience to take on full adult responsibilities. The life expectancy of Brightfield is 47 years of age. The harsh weather conditions of the desert and hard working have set it this way.

The natural resources Brightfield provides are coal, bauxite, and titanium. Bauxite was first found when farmers were plowing their fields. This is because it usually forms near the surface. Coal, being farther down, was first found when citizens were digging wells for water. Titanium was also found shallow in the Earth’s crust by farmers in its ore form. It was later turned into what we know as titanium. Coal can be found deep underground in the outskirts of the Brightfield settlement. These mines will also provide many job opportunities. Unfortunately, bauxite was found in the more rural areas of Brightfield causing the removal of some small farms. The titanium is also found in rural areas, but it is mined in more of the northeastern side of Brightfield, towards the volcano. Coal will begin being used for creating fires that last a long time for forgery but as technology expands it can be used for greater things like steam engines. Bauxite can very easily be turned into aluminum and from there, the people can create household items or power lines and vehicles when technology grows. The elected officials will collectively decide how the resources are distributed. They may use some for trade and some for the well being of Brightfield. Trade will be easy because Brightfield is located at the top of a series of river systems that lead to other settlements.

The settlement of Brightfield will use linear village distribution because of the way it follows the river. The outpost will be located down the river where it forks. It will use the walled village distribution because of its proximity to the other settlements. Big decisions, like where to make a new settlement, will be voted on by the public. The new outpost will likely be located where the river forks. This will give it a good relative location to Brightfield and a reliable water source. A second vote will then be taken upon the people on how to distribute the resources in and among the two settlements. The walls around Brightfield’s outpost will help to protect against enemy raids and help to regulate trade and commerce.

Week 6 Reflection

Brightfield will use bauxite to form aluminum. The aluminum can then be used to pots, pans, cans, and tools. We will then use coal to power ships, trains, and to provide heat. The colony will also use it’s titanium to make the hulls of the ships and for light metal fabrication. The production that would mechanized would be the metal fabrication, aluminum production, and cans/small metal items. The agglomeration of industries includes the aluminum industry. The miners will have to work with the fabrication factories to sell their bauxite ore. The fabrication factories can the use the bauxite to create the aluminum. The aluminum will then be exported to blacksmiths and merchants who can make it into an item or tool and sell it. The industrial belt is located on the Northeast side of Brightfield where the mines are and stretches Southwest down to where the river splits the colony in half. That is where the factories and industries start. This rush of industry has put me in stage three of the demographic transition model. Places that are in the same stage include Costa Rica, India, Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador. My colony best represents India.

I believe the colony of Brightfield is most like india because of the climate and the type of work that is found in both places. In both India and Brightfield, you can find large scale farms that require lots of labor. Over time, this can affect life expectancy which will change the population pyramids making them similar. The climate in the colony is similar to that of Northwest India where they are both dry deserts.

                                          URBAN                                                                                         RURAL

IMG_4302.JPGIMG_4301.JPG

This stage of Demographic Transition can affect people’s life in many different ways. When industries are first developed there is a major need for cheap and tough labor. This job usually goes to immigrants who are willing to work the labor intensive jobs for less money. The people working in the industries in my colony will include the middle to low class. The colony is largely based off industry so it will attract the middle class people to work some higher end jobs. There will still be a need for the harder jobs to be done so this will attract the lower class of people who will work for less money. In the real world, this stage affected people’s social life by taking away hours of their day that might have been used for free time. In my colony it will bring the people closer together because they will all be working together for a chain a causes and will have to rely on each other to get their jobs done. For example, if the miners do not mine the bauxite, the people working the industries will not be able to produce aluminum. The key is to have one big synchronized system of workers.

Week 7 Reflection

My country is currently in stage 3 of the demographic transition model. In an effort to lower birth rates, it will be using the China one child policy. This will keep the birthrates lower, limiting most families to one child. The most common cause of death in my country is cancer and heart disease. Research and technology have prevented death from many diseases but my country is not yet developed enough to fight heart disease and cancer. Men are the main source of income for families in my country but women are just beginning to explore their rights. Women are starting to take low paying jobs in factories and other small businesses. This advancement in their careers makes it difficult to have children and take care of them but it is possible. How it will usually work, is that the men in the family will work during the workweek to make money and the women will stay at home to take care of the children. But on the weekends the women will go off to their jobs while the men stay at home to rest and take care of the children. This is all in the beginning as women are just beginning to explore their rights.

Agriculture by the usage of machinery is just starting to be used in my country. Less people will be required to do back breaking work and the job will be done quicker and more efficiently It will still be performed on large plots of land and harvested in rows. Most of the crops will be exported for money but some will be used to feed my country’s citizens.

Lawyers are an example of the kinds of services provided in my country. They will make the citizens feel safer and cared  for.

Doctors are another service provided to our citizens. They will help the death rates to lower and allow people to feel healthy at all times

This graph accurately represents my country because the places with agriculture will have fewer people and that is where the yellow circles are. There are more of them because there is a lot of agriculture in my country. There is not too many people but still a lot in the service industry which is represented by the orange circles. My country has the least amount of people in industry and that is represented by the red circles because it will take place in the big cities.

The new urbanization impact has caused my country’s cities to use the concentric zone model above.

My country is not accepting multinational corporations and instead it’s helping to build its infrastructure. This will better benefit my country because it won't have to share its profits.  My country is joining the supranational organization of Clojam Navy. In this organization we will join each others navy's for the purpose of trade and commerce.

Feature Concept

Feature Concept Explanation

This map of the world represents the general flow of migration from continent to continent and nation to nation. There are also illustrations on each continent that represent the culture of the area. By looking at the map you can see how the cultures will mix based on the flow of migration in that area in the alternate world, there are internal migrations and immigrations all around the world. The cultures will then have to mix together. The map will accurately represent this by showing the real world example.

Future of Brightfield

In Brightfield, the future doesn't look good. The government and economy have already started to deteriorate. This will cause Brightfield to degrade into a previous stage of development and lead to the rise of terrorist organizations in the country and surrounding area.

Personal Evaulations

  • I would not like to live in my country because of the condition that it is in. It is slowly degrading into almost unspeakable conditions.

  • Someone could defientely write a book on my country. This person could write a legnthy book about the struggles and hardship people face

  • The most fun part of this project would probably have to be the making of our own governments and policies.

  • The most intresting part of this project was the way that we had to come up with our own trade patterns and borders that lined our countries.

  • The hardest part of this project was the process of deciding what our population would be like and how it would develop and evolve.

Week 5 Reflection

In my settlement, the government is a mix between a monarchy and an oligarchy. The settlement is broken up into sections, oligarch members have control over their section of the settlement and can create laws and controls the construction created in his/her settlement. The oligarchs are chosen by the King or Queen and must consult with the king and his/her fellow oligarchs before making any changes to his/her section. However when it comes to control of the entire settlement the king/queen has full command and can determine the number of sections in his/her settlement, go to war with other settlements, and can veto or remove oligarchies from their post.

In my settlement, People become official adults at the age of 14. When a person becomes 14 in my settlement, they are thrown a big party and celebrations are held every month in the settlement to celebrate adulthood for the people who turned 14 that month. The responsibilities of an adult is to pay your taxes, keep up with your land, help out in your section with local projects, and show up to any invitation or order given to you by the government. If you do not complete all of these requirements, your citizenship is stripped and you must regain it by good deeds. When you are not a citizen of my settlement, you pay a much high tax, you cannot own land, and you may sometimes be drafted into the military. The average life expectancy in my settlement is 33 years of age for men and 31 years of age for women. The people in my settlement are killed by flooding, diseases, war, animals, and giving birth.

The nearby resources that surround the settlement is Coal, Nickel, and Uranium. The nickel is located in the hills around the settlement, while the coal and uranium is located just off the coast in the ocean floor. The settlement found nickel when digging up farmland in the side of hills. Coal and uranium were discovered when build irrigation. People were digging trenches for irrigation when at the mouth of the river they found bits of coal and uranium. The nickel is used for Construction of cooking pots and pans, construction of beams for homes and buildings, and sheets of metal again for construction. Coal is used for the use of building fires and to heat homes and other buildings, coal is important for the cooking process in my settlement. Lastly, uranium is used for coloring glass yellow and green. My settlement cannot harvest the full power of uranium yet, so it is perceived as useless in my settlement until nuclear energy is understood. The king/queen gives each section the same amount of resources, however it can be distributed however the oligarch in control of the section wants it. Most often coal is given at the same amount unless it is a government building therefore needing more coal to heat a larger building. Small amounts of nickel are given to citizens for home improvements or repairs. The government uses nickel for more local buildings and expansions to the settlement. Uranium is not given to any of the citizens and is only used for coloring glass.

With ideas of expanding farther into the continent, my settlement sets up a walled village farther up the river from where the settlement is. The government uses the walled village as a military training ground and embassy for other settlements to talk about trade and issues. The walled village is not open to citizens unless war destroys the settlement on the coast, or protection is needed. The walled village is given a majority of the nickel and coal, coal for fire and heat, while nickel is used in shields and weapons and building in the walled village.

Week 6 Reflection

My region can produce many alloys using nickel and copper that lays in the ground around multiple of cities in my region, which those alloys would then be used for machines and other structures, the uranium that I have access to can be used to make the shading in photographs and lethal weapons, also the coal I contain in my region can be used for railroad transportation and early engine aquatic transportation, and even to heat and run machines in factories and homes. The items that are produced by machines would be trains, ships and boats, beams of metal, other machinery, weapons, and cameras. The agglomeration industries I have is the metal industry, the metal mines are near the factories that produce certain items, those items then go the the specified area for what it will be used for such as housing, more factories, transportation, or other construction, if the metal is to imported it will either go to the coast to be shipped out or will be put onto a cargo train to be delivered. The industrial belt in my region is consisted of the settlements I have on the major river that are settled on the coast of the river.

The industry in my region puts me in the third stage of the demographic transition because of the advancement in technology and medicine. The life expectancy is rising and more families are cutting down from large families to smaller family therefore placing my region in the third stage of the demographic agglomeration.

Costa Rica, India, Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador are all in the third stage of the demographic transition.

I chose Mexico as the closes to my region because it represents my economy and population pyramid in my region. Plus, Mexico also has the same land and water based trading as my region does also.

    Agriculture Village            Manufacturing Belt

In real world industrial revolutions, many men worked in factories, but also women and children were used as cheap labor. This caused less children to be born therefore creating a lower birthrate. In my settlement, men would be the main source for hard labor and working in the fields, but we would use women and children to do the work in factories, textiles, and other home goods or everyday needs.  This would allow us to continue harvesting natural resources, but also create things with them. My settlement would benefit from this largely. In real world societies, social life began changing.  People had less time, and women went to work, therefore they could not take care of the children. This caused movements in society concerning rights of women to do what men could. Power shifted from men to more of an equal stance, however it did not complete a fully equal society. This also caused a big gap to form between the wealthy and poor, and made a much smaller group of middle class citizens.  In my region, because of women and children doing equal labor as men, they started feeling more of an importance and realized their worth, and men were forced to work together with the women. Children were released from the duties and laws were created to keep them in school and to encourage finishing school at universities.  This caused a huge increase in production because of the want and will of the women who are getting equal pay, and an increase in education because children have to go to school by law. Society will be a much more unified place with no discrimination because of gender or origin.

Week 7 Reflection

Xander is a semi-peripheral country, and is on the verge of becoming a stage 4 country. Xander’s leading causes of death are CVA (Stroke), ischemic heart disease, and road injuries. Xander’s work force from factories to medical professions is split down the middle between men and women. Expected lifestyle roles for men and women are the same, with women being high contributors to the country's economy. Also, with women wanting to pursue their chosen career and raise a family at the same time,  there are incentives that are given out properly by the government. The incentives include flexible work hours, paid vacation days that fall into the local school system, and increased pay.

Agriculture in Xander is done mostly by large machines and specialized equipment. The farms in Xander are getting larger and larger due to the growing population. Large machines and large companies are taking over the farming industry, but many farms are still family owned. Most farming is on the large plains in Xander and is then transported to wherever the product is to be delivered. Food grown in Xander is also traded with nearby countries and its allies.

Image result for doctors office

The services in Xander include simple things such as doctor offices and law firms. These services provide easy access to services that are needed. Many services in Xander are needed by the public, instead of services that provide luxury such as nails salons. However, as Xander starts to transition to stage 4, there will be more services and more luxury services available.

Connection to real world

My country is most related to Egypt, as it has the same climate and food production as Xander. Plus, Xander and Egypt are in the same demographic transition stage (3). However, Xander has a very different government, and civil rights on its people. Food, and climate are the major connections between Egypt and Xander. Xander is on its way to becoming a stage four nation in Tripolar, but still needs economic development to grow.

Population Density                                                                             Urban Model  (Concentric Zone)

The Concentric Zone model has a distinct area of wealth from low income to high income. The low income houses have to have easy access to transitional zone for work, while high income houses have the ability to commute to the CBD for work. Xander is not accepting multinational corporations because or country is not fond of sharing profits and owing already developed countries. Also, if the multinational corporations do not provide with anything that boost our country's economy, Xander would end up hurting itself. Xander is apart of the Clojam Navy and is working to join the CCA. These two organizations both help Xander by having military power and economic and trade power. These are similar to the United Nations and the EU.

Feature Concept

Political Organization of space is responsible for every single country’s identity and interaction within and around the country. My drawing demonstrates the connections between cities and town that bring the country more information and availability to news, medical technologies, everyday objects as well as food, and other useful objects that improve the environment around people for a better life. The color of my drawing shows the sense of community as it associates everyone who lives in the United States as one nation with the colors of red, white, and blue. The mini pictures drawn in my drawing show the simple activities that happen everyday, such as hospitals, police stations as well as fire departments, Universities and public school systems, and the law itself that protects the rights of people and their well being. The border of the United States shows the territoriality, as there is border control and defined boundaries for countries today that is a major part of its identity. Sense of Community has strengthened throughout the years mainly because of the increase in urban development and advanced communication. The multiple capitals shown in the drawing shows a federal government. A federal government has different section of the country broken up and those sections are allowed to make laws for themselves and have leaders who only have control over that section. While unitary countries only have one main government.

Future of Xander

The future of Xander looks bright. It isn't the most advanced in the world but it has powerful allies that will help it keep evolving into a world superpower. Xander also has many rare resources that will increase the amount of trade and economic activity it has.

The future of the world will be more connectivity as alliances grow, technology improves, and more countries start to stabilize its government and population. Trade will increase, and more international organizations will be in place.

Personal Evaluation

  • I would like to live in my country because it is my own Utopia  that I have created.

  • Someone could definitely write a book about the ever growing war power that is Xander, especially its powerful Commander and Chief.

  • The most fun part of this project was the bargaining and the trade offs that had to happen in order to achieve want I wanted

  • The most interesting part of this project was the different types of map making that we had to do

  •  The hardest part of this project was the original start of it, meaning it took a long time for the settlements to really grow into what we wanted

Conclusion

Xander and Tripolar together, only make up a chunk of this made up world. While creating this world, I learned many different aspects of Human Geography. The creation of this world incorporated what I had learned and showed what I needed to know. Overall, this class and year long project, has taught me more than I thought, and did so while actually enjoying the process.

Altuve

Week 6 Reflection

My colony is called Altuve and is located in the fork of two rivers. The colony will start out as a hunter gatherer tribe. The life expectancy of the people in the tribe will be between 40 and 50 years. In the tribe, someone will come of age at the age or become an adult at the age of 14. This is because as soon as someone comes of age, they will be able to hunt and assist the tribe in gathering and finding food. This will help make sure that the tribe always has an abundance of food.

The type of government in the tribe will start as a version of Oligarchy and Democracy mixed. It will be part Democracy because the people of the tribe will be allowed to vote for the chief of the tribe. The voted chief will stay chief for life. The tribe will be part Oligarchy because the chief will be allowed to choose a group of elders to help advise him. The colony’s government will continue to progress and evolve as the colony gets bigger. Some of the responsibilities of adults in the community are to vote to elect the chief, help gather food, and to support and protect the community.

The resources of the colony are copper, diamond, and tin. These were discovered when some of the townspeople went exploring, and came back and claimed that they found weird rocks in a cave. The chief followed them back to the cave and the resources were found. The resources are located in caves near the river, and some of the resources can be found in the rivers. Some uses for the copper and tin are turning them into currency, weapons, advanced means of travel or transportation, as well as buildings and daily necessities. Diamonds could be used for trade because they are a very precious metal, as well as using them for jewelry. The government will want to be in charge of the diamonds because the value that they possess, but the government won’t have as much input in the copper and tin industries because they are daily commodities and easy to obtain.

The colony’s outpost will be located down river from the original colony, near the lake. The colony will be walled because it is a military outpost. This way it can be protected. The government is involved in making new weapons and military technologies. The outpost will be very advanced so the colony is always ready for war.

Week 6 Reflection

With the diamonds that my region has can be used for making jewelry and trading. The copper and tin in my region can be used for making everyday materials such as aluminum and other alloys that we use in everyday life. These are used to make anything made with common metals like tin cans, currencies, and weapons. Some of the mechanized industries are metal production, textile production, and vehicles for transportation production. Some of the agglomeration of industries are that cotton production would be right next to textile mills, and metal mines would be right next to places where metal can be transformed into usable material. My industrial belt is right along the river running through my country. It has helped me propel myself forwards in the demographic transition because my country is industrializing very fast, allowing me to move into stage 3 of the Demographic Transition Model.

1- Botswana

2- Colombia

3- Jamaica

4- India

5- Mexico

Mexico is most like my country because it has a similar economy, a large population, it has similar geography in some places, and it has similar politics.

Image result for mexico population pyramid

The people that work in the industries are people that are poor laborers that needed jobs. These people would be the factory workers that were poor and desperate for jobs to support themselves and their families. In my country, these would be the people that did the unskilled jobs of mining and collecting the copper, tin, and diamonds. Then there would also be unskilled laborers in the copper and tin factories, but the diamonds would go directly to skilled laborers that could make jewelry and craft the precious metal. The social life changed in the world with more people doing industry jobs and moving to big cities. In my region, the social life would change because people would flock to industrial cities to make money and work in the factories. Also, mining towns would rise and get large populations of people who were desperate for jobs and decided it was worth the risk to work in the mines.

Week 7 Reflection

My country, Altuve, is in stage 3 and very close to becoming stage 4. However, in order to lower the birth rate, my country will be issuing a one-child only policy. In this policy, each couple will be allowed to have one birth only, or they will be penalized financially. The most common causes of death are cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and infectious diseases such as HIV. In Altuve, both men and women have equal rights. Most countries in Altuve are very forward thinking, and to help women in the workplace, many companies provide daycares and other innovative ways to help women with children. Altuve is accepting of multinational companies as long as they do not go into countries that are enemies of Altuve, the CCA, or the Clojam Navy. Altuve helps the companies build their infrastructure inside of Altuve and help the companies root themselves inside of Altuve.Altuve is involved in the supranational organizations CCA and Clojam Navy. These organizations are like the United Nations in the real world.

This is my country’s population pyramid:

In Altuve, the country has a large population of workforce aged people because of the focus on manufacturing and agriculture, like other third stage countries such as China and India.

These are my country’s pie charts:

This is my Concentric Zone Model:

The new urbanization and focus on manufacturing has led major cities in Altuve to be the focal point, with surrounding cities focusing on agriculture. This is true for the largest city in Altuve, Correa, which follows the Concentric Zone Model.

Image result for ranch imagesImage result for agriculture images

These images show how agriculture would be in Altuve. In Altuve, huge plots of land are dedicated to farming and ranching because they are such a large part of the economy in Altuve. Around 35 percent of people in Altuve are in the agriculture business.

Image result for bankingImage result for teaching

In Altuve, there is not very many services. The services provided are usually simple like haircutting, but there is also higher level services like banking and teaching. However, services make up only a small percentage of Altuve’s economy.

Feature Concept

Future of Altuve

The future of Altuve looks good and seems to be bright. The country is moving on into stage 4 and has plenty of power through trade and other means. This looks to be like a good country to be in.

Personal Evaluations

  • I would like to live in my country because it seems to be in a good place right now and looks to soon be one of the better countries in the made up world

  • Someone could write a book about my country because it is a good place to live and would make for a great read

  • My favorite part about the project was the designing of the borders because it was fun to argue back and forth with the people in my group

  • The most interesting part of my project was the institution of the different assigned events, such as the different population flows and the resources

  • The hardest part was trying to originally split up the continent and not go to war over the little things.
