My grandmother was a good housewife She made winter and summer clothes for her young growing family From all the furs that my grandfather caught my grandmother sewed to make parkas snow pants kamiks sealskin snow boots and more After the 1950s dog slaughter she had to start buying most of her sewing materials from the store Sometimes my grandpa would Sewing go out and hunt or catch seal or caribou for my grandmother to sew Those animals would also provide plenty of traditional food to eat Around that time is when my grandmother developed her passion for sewing My grandmother used to make Inuit sewn dolls and brooches in the shape of small kamiks Lizzie Shem Tooktoo April 14 1926 January 27 1991 I came from a grandfather who became an alcoholic after the dog slaughter days a man who did not get the chance to teach me how to hunt with a dog sled team and my grandmother who never drank but kept busy sewing and keeping the family together I have learned to go out into nature with my family s friend s parents and my great uncle and I am now passionate about ice fishing Almost every weekend during winter I would go out to the lakes or rivers to ice fish with my ice fishing buddy Parsa Kitishimik Our ice fishing trips have expanded to include hunting for caribou and geese Daphne Tooktoo little kamik 2017 Unfisnihed little kamik borchure by Late Lizzie Shem Tooktoo 1940 1950 Daphne Tooktoo Inuit Doll made by Lizzie Shem Tooktoo 2017 4 Daphne Tooktoo Graphic and Web Design John Abbott College 2017 Daphne Tooktoo Graphic and Web Design John Abbott College 5
