INVESTIGATION ON “TENNIS RANKING”

If you have ever watched a game of tennis on the television, you probably
would have heard statements like “Venus Williams is the number seven
ranked player in the world”.

In this investigation we will look at how the women’s tennis ranking
system works.

RESEARCH

² Who are currently the number one ranked male and female tennis
players?

Ans:-
 1 1 NOVAK DJOKOVIC SERBIA 12,900 2 2 ANDY MURRAY GREAT BRITAIN 10,485 3 3 STANISLAS WAWRINKA SWITZERLAND 5,820 4 6 MILOS RAONIC CANADA 4,690 5 4 KEI NISHIKORI JAPAN 4,650 6 5 RAFAEL NADAL SPAIN 4,380 7 8 GAEL MONFILS FRANCE 3,815 8 7 ROGER FEDERER SWITZERLAND 3,720 9 9 TOMAS BERDYCH CZECH REPUBLIC 3,300 10 10 DOMINIC THIEM AUSTRIA 3,250

² What are the rankings used for?

Ans:- The ATP Rankings, as defined by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), are the "objective merit-based method used for determining qualification for entry and seeding in all tournaments for both (male) singles and doubles, except as modified for the ATP World Tour Finals (singles or doubles)."

KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENTS

Most of the tennis tournaments played are knockout tournaments. There are 128players in the most
important knockout tournaments, but smaller tournaments have fewer players.

In the first round, all 128 players play, so 64 matches are played in total. This is called the ‘round of 128’. The
64 losers are knocked out, and the64 winners advance to the next round, called the ‘round of64’. In this round
32 matches are played, with the 32 losers knocked out, and the 32 winners advancing to the ‘round of 32’.

This process continues through to the quarter finals (round of 8) and the semi-finals (round of 4), until the
remaining two competitors play off in the final.

TOURNAMENT POINTS

Players are awarded pointsfor each tournament they play. The number of points they receive depends on two
factors.

The first factor is how far a player advances in the tournament. The more matches a player wins before she is
knocked out, the more points she earns.

The second factor is the importance of the tournament. There are four ‘Grand Slam’ tournaments each year, and
these are the mostimportant tournaments so they give more points. The remaining tournaments are grouped into
tiers, from Tier 1 down to Tier 4, based on how much prize money is offered in the tournament.

POINTS TABLE

Below is a simplified table showing how many points a player is awarded for a tournament, based on the category
of the tournament and how far the player progressed.

For example, if a player wins a Grand
points.

If a playerloses in the round of 32 in a Tier 1tournament, theyreceive
45 points.

If a player loses in the final of a Tier 2 tournament, they receive 215
points.

Tennis Rankings
2
What to do:
1 How many points will a player receive if she:
a wins a Tier 3 tournament
b loses in the quarter final of a Grand Slam tournament
c loses in the round of 16 of a Tier 4 tournament?
RANKING POINTS
A player’s ranking is not calculated based on their last tournament only. To calculate a player’s total ranking
points, we consider all the point scores for tournaments played in the last 12 months. The player’s 17 highest
point scores are added to give a player’s total score. Players are then ranked based on this score.
For example, suppose Elena has competed in 20 tournaments in the last 12 months, and has scored the following
points from those tournaments:
215, 75, 1, 125, 700, 30, 165, 225, 90, 70, 350, 125, 1, 60, 300, 70, 225, 45, 500, 140
To find the 17 highest scores, we remove the three lowest scores, which are the two one point scores and the 30
point score. The 17 highest scores are added to give a total of:
215 + 75 + 125 + 700 + 165 + 225 + 90 + 70 + 350 + 125 + 60 + 300 + 70 + 225 + 45 + 500 +
140 = 3480 points.
What to do:
2 How many tournaments has Elena won in the last 12 months?
3 Over the last 12 months, Anna, Belinda and Carolina
competed in the same 20 tournaments, and achieved the
results opposite:
a Convert each of the results into a point score.
b Calculate the total ranking score for each of the players.
c Which of these three players will be ranked the highest?
Which player will be ranked the lowest?
DISCUSSION
In addition to the points described above, players used to be
awarded ‘quality points’, based on the quality of their opponents.
In other words, you received more points for defeating the world
number 1 player than you received for defeating the world
number 100 player. Do you think it is a good idea to include
‘quality points’ in the ranking system?
