Telling Time

Lesson Objective

Students will learn to correctly tell time to the hour and half hour on both a digital and analog clock, and understand the

difference between a.m. and p.m. Students will also be able to tell time using the minute hand and the hour hand.

Background Information for Teacher

Teacher needs to know the difference between the hour hand and minute hand.

Student Prior Knowledge

Student should be familiar with numbers and they should have prior exposure to time and clocks.

Materials:

● Analog clocks

● Smart board to display digital clock

● Scissors

● Markers

● Glue

● Metal brad

● Clock template (Step 3)

● Telling time worksheet (Step 3)

Step 2: Teach Lesson

Tell the student, today we will be learning about how to tell time reading an analog clock and a digital clock.

Start the lesson by displaying the large digital clock.

Have a discussion with the student and explain the correct way to read a digital clock.

Explain that the first two numbers tell us what hour it is and the second two number tell us the minutes past the hour.

Explain to the student what a.m and p.m means next to the numbers ( a.m. is used for morning and p.m. is used for

afternoon and night time). Allow the student time to ask questions and clarify any confusion. Then move on to the analog

clocks.

Using a large analog clock, guide the student to discuss what all the parts of the clock represent and how they are used to

read time.

Explain to the student what an hour hand is (the smaller hand that tells us what the hour is).

Explain to the student what a minute hand is (the larger hand that indicates the minutes, which tells us how much time has

passed after the hour).

Explain that each line between the numbers represents 1 minute and there are 5 lines in between each set of numbers,

which means there are 5 minutes. Show the student how to count in increments of 5 on the clock.

Teach the Counting by Fives song to reinforce the lesson(the student can watch the video or you can teach the song).

Once you are done with the song, allow time for the student to ask any questions and clarify any confusion.

Practice with the student on how to tell time on an analog clock. Choose different times on the analog clock and have the

student tell the time.

After there is an understanding of telling time with an analog clock, the student will create their own clock using the clock

template worksheet (Step 3).

Once the student is done with the clock give them a time and ask the student to show that time on their own clock.

Step 4: Review. Start the next lesson with the game or activity attached below for review so the student can

demonstrate understanding of this lesson before moving forward.

Time telling (online) game

Counting Time with Mr. Big Bad Wolf (offline) game

Get a group of children.

Select one child to be Big Bad Wolf. Turn his back against the rest of children.

Draw a line about 10 feet away behind the "Big Bad Wolf". Get children to stand behind this line.

Children will shout, "What is the time Mr. Big Bad Wolf?"

Big Bad Wolf shouts "1 o'clock" and turn back.

Other children take one-step towards Big Bad Wolf and freeze when he turns around. Whoever moves will drop out from

the game.

Repeat until 12 o'clock. Big Bad Wolf will have to catch a child while turning back.

Children will have to run back behind the line before caught.
