Forward in Faith Fr Jerry Herda Shortly after I arrived as Pastor of St Eugene I read the book Good to Great by Jim Collins It is a book about leadership of companies and what makes some companies good while others are great I realized at the time that our parish was good actually very good but I thought we could be great and even more we could be doing great things for Christ Nine years later I believe with my whole heart that St Eugene is a great parish We have a vibrant community with a dedicated staff an excellent school and an excellent high school grade school religious education program We have terrific liturgies with wonderful music great preaching and full participation We have formed a very strong and lasting twinning relationship with our sister parish in Uganda We help the poor we care for the sick we mourn with the grieving we are a loving and caring community I am so proud to have been the pastor of this great parish for the last nine years This retrospective is a way for us to show all that has happened within our parish over the last year but for me personally it is a chance to brag about all that we have done for nearly a decade When I think about the number of Masses funerals anointings baptisms and weddings I have celebrated over my time as pastor it is quite the number Our parish membership has grown our Mass attendance numbers have increased and our financial giving has been on the rise You have taken my challenge to be Committed to Christ and to become a disciple of Jesus Christ serious You have embraced stewardship as a way of life and for all of this I say thank you I cannot thank you enough for the love and support you have shown to me over the years We have prayed together laughed together cried together But I leave you with another challenge keep it going continue to be a great parish The greatness we have achieved is not about me as your pastor it s about us as a community loving and serving the Lord So continue to give of your time talent and treasure continue to grow in holiness as disciples of Jesus Christ and continue to be the great parish that God is calling St Eugene to be Committed to Christ Fr Jerry Herda

Fr Jacob Strand Fr Andrew Linn As I reflect upon my 3 years in Fox Point and Whitefish Bay I am inclined to write a simple letter to express sentiments of gratitude to God and to the parishioners of St Eugene and St Monica for the many blessings I received during my brief assignment as associate pastor Have you ever looked forward to something for years Maybe marriage or a new career or a child or a particular school Whatever it is the longer you think about it the more you imagine the possibilities and build expectations of what life will be like when you finally achieve your goal I have wanted to be a priest my entire life Not that discernment was simple and I never wanted to be married or to have a professional career but behind it all I have always wanted to be a priest So I ve had thirty years to imagine what life would be like Undoubtedly I learned a lot about diocesan priesthood during my assignment and I hope that I grew in my ability unworthy as I am to faithfully serve as a priest of Jesus Christ For the many lessons I learned through successes and failures I am very thankful I also was given the gift of witnessing the faith of countless parishioners which was especially evident during life s challenges To believe during moments of darkness and hardship is a beautiful testament to the abiding presence of Jesus Christ The beautiful faith of many parishioners and families was also apparent and personally inspiring when I noted their unshakable commitment to the Sacraments particularly Sunday Mass and Confession Given the rise of secularism this is no small achievement Finally so many people who selflessly gave of themselves each day through loving service to those in need and to their families and friends encouraged me very much I will always consider my assignment at St Monica and St Eugene a great blessing I m honored to continue praying for the parishioners of both parishes and I hope they will also remember me in their prayers as well In Christ Fr Jacob Strand My first year at St Eugene and St Monica has been everything I hoped I have loved getting to know hundreds of people I ve loved preaching and saying Mass and hearing confessions I ve loved meeting people individually and offering them my time presence prayers and encouragement I ve loved how people I ve never met before have invited me into their lives and shared with me their joys and sorrows Most of all I have loved seeing God work through me drawing people closer to Himself using me to reveal His love for them In the past year one way God has revealed His love for me has been our pastor Father Jerry He has welcomed me into the parish and the priesthood and has given me the freedom to jump into anything and everything that has interested me He has encouraged me when ministry was frustrating or challenging whether I was trying to call forth conversion or to comfort the sorrowful He has encouraged me to celebrate the Mass with love in a way that is sincere and authentic giving me freedom to celebrate differently than he He has given me the freedom to offer confession frequently and I think every parishioner knows my passion for this Sacrament He has set an example of self sacrificial presence warmth and love for parishioners even when at times I know he d like to go home and watch the Brewer game I thank God for Fr Jerry s presence in my life and I ask God to bless him in his priesthood I will miss our weekly dinners with Fr John Paczesny and pray for him in his future ministry In Christ Fr Andrew

Committed to Christ Several years ago our parish implemented the process we have come to know as Committed to Christ C2C I initially was not too sure of what C2C was all about I knew the importance of helping people to grow in their faith but it wasn t until I fully embraced it that I was able to see the impact it would have on my life and the life of our parishioners Each of us is called to grow in our faith journey C2C is a process that allows each person to look at where they are currently at in the areas of prayer Mass attendance formation financial giving evangelization and service and then take steps to improve and grow closer to the Lord For the last several years you have heard me challenge you to grow and take steps For me these have not been simply speaking the words that I speak but I have tried to live them out in my life as well I can honestly say I have increased my prayer life during my time as your Pastor I have read more books and have grown both intellectually and spiritually I have given more money to our parish to the larger church and to other needy causes I have done all of these things because I desire to grow closer to the Lord and I m not done and neither are you Please continue to be Committed to Christ each and every day of your life Committed to Christ Fr Jerry Herda

Ministries School Fr Jerry has given St Eugene School many gifts during his tenure as pastor of St Eugene Congregation His love for the children has always been evident in the ways that he finds to show his inner child when around the students Giving high fives after Mass joining in the relay races at the parish picnic and blessing the athletes at Junior Olympics have been times when Fr Jerry s smile said it all He truly enjoyed these lighthearted moments Gathering for our weekly all school liturgies is a treasured time for our school community Fr Jerry relished celebrating Mass with the students and faculty His homilies always made the Gospel relevant He never talked down to the students but instead challenged them to know how God is present in their lives Fr Jerry supported all of the parish ministries and saw how they are interconnected His support for the school ministry was demonstrated by his willingness to find ways to help raise funds for tuition assistance so that families could afford the choice of a Catholic school His leadership pushed our school to be exemplary and innovative while always remaining grounded and guided by our Catholic identity He encouraged school families to be active in both school events and parish events He understood how our school plays a role in evangelization The students observed in Fr Jerry his deep love for God and his deep love for the Catholic Church The students saw a priest who loves being a priest They never saw him complain about his vocation but instead they saw him embrace it What a remarkable example of someone answering God s call Our school community will miss Fr Jerry We will miss his leadership guidance support and pastoral presence We will continue to pray for Fr Jerry and give thanks for the gifts he freely gave in God s name to St Eugene School Godspeed Fr Jerry Reflections on Fr Jerry s gifts to St Eugene School from Principal Rebecca Jones Child As Fr Jerry leaves the parishes of St Eugene and St Monica I have been reflecting on his impact on the children of our parishes When you talk to the kids about vocations and specifically the priesthood they think first of Fr Jerry There certainly are other priests who the kids recall but for many of them at their young age Fr Jerry is their priest Stories of the Brewers and Hank the Brewer s dog Here are some of the things they will remember The handshake or more often the highfive as they exit church after mass Fun at parish picnics racing Fr Jerry in a sack race or the fun of a water balloon fight Learning in the classrooms and at Mass from someone who is able to deliver a homily in a way that both adults and children can understand and relate to Fr Jerry s presence walking down the hall on a Sunday morning followed by his hello and distinctive laugh as he poked his head into Sunday School classrooms just to say hello First Reconciliation being a little less scary because their priest was present Meeting each child where they are at be it loud and boisterous or quiet and reflective Fr Jerry has consistently impressed upon pastoral staff the question How do we bring more people to Mass When considering First Eucharist being even more special when celebrated with their priest future programs this has been a guiding principle I thank Fr Jerry for his ability to think outside the box and develop our vision for Child Ministry We have continued the Sunday School program between Masses and with his support we have added a Family Sundays component where the whole family participates after attending Mass together These Sunday mornings are beautiful as they exhibit what the Catholic Church is all about faith worship prayer Bible study service and community You will find very few parishes who offer both programs Thank you Fr Jerry for the vision support and empowerment that you have developed in all of us staff and parishioners In gratitude Jeanette Lambrecht Director of Child Ministry Youth Our parishes have been so blessed to have a pastor who has a love for youth ministry Not many people know that Fr Jerry considers himself a youth minister at heart as that is where his ministry truly began in fact before becoming a priest he planned to be a youth minister He has invested not only the parishes resources but his own time into our high school teens With his encouragement guidance and support youth ministry has grown into a community of the youth the young church and is establishing deep roots With Fr Jerry s initiative 66 teens will attend the National Catholic Youth Conference in the last 4 years When a teen is struggling with the decision to be confirmed Fr Jerry is always willing to meet to listen and discuss their questions He has built an extraordinary relationship with our teens They love when he joins them for teen nights study group bon fires dinner and even a few rounds of laser tag They know that he cares about them His love for our youth his priestly gift to them is a reflection for The Father s love This is something that is rooted in their hearts because of him that they will always know there is a place for them in Our Church Thank you Fr Jerry Meaghan Turner Capital Campaign Once again thank you for your generosity In 2015 our parish embarked on the Forward in Faith Capital Campaign which sought to raise 1 5million for capital improvements to our physical campus plus an additional 10 for outreach and endowments By the end of the campaign pledges from 387 parish families totaled just over 1 6million To date almost 1 1million in pledges has been paid The most critical need of the campaign was the roofing on the campus The church and rectory tar and stone roofs were replaced with metal roofing and the school roofing was repaired and resealed The budget for the roofs was 350 000 and the cost came to just over 330 000 Our second project are the parking lots The west parking lot was completed in the summer of 2016 A new drive by the west entrance provides a more quiet and natural environment before entering the church and an island for more comfortable pedestrian traffic Additional handicapped parking spots were added Since our lot had little to no slope we constantly struggled with water issues on and below the surface of the lot In order to alleviate the water issue and create a slope six areas were identified as soft spots which required deeper digging and additional stones and the removal of 15 dump truck loads of soil to create a pitch The budget for the east and west parking lots was 300 000 The west lot costs came to 282 000 The east lot is slated to be completed in summer of 2017 with an anticipated cost of 78 000 The Mackin Hall kitchen was also renovated during the summer of 2016 Thanks to the generosity of Palermo Pizza Co we fully gutted the kitchen and replaced original equipment with modern functioning equipment One of the favorite new features is the ice machine The budget for the kitchen was 75 000 and the costs came in at 74 000 One project was completed ahead of schedule due to the failure of equipment The campus was fully equipped with new state of art wifi units The budget was 42 000 and came in at 42 000 thanks to the generosity of SWICKTech Remaining projects include the renovation of our sanctuary and sound system school security plan 450 000 Mackin Hall renovation completion 50 000 air conditioning for the school library 10 000 and pipe organ repairs 90 000 At this point due to the parking lot cost overrun we will not be able to repair the pipe organ 10 of the funds received have been allocated as follows 30 000 for the school and parish endowments 30 000 for capital improvement fund 30 000 to our sister parish in Uganda Our Lady Queen of Apostles for a new roof and 10 000 for our Human Concerns Committee grants If you were not able to pledge in 2015 but would like to participate today please visit our website and under the giving tab you will find the campaign page where you can make your pledge or donate Thank You for your generosity Thank you to the families who have responded so generously to our campaign

Looking Ahead The members of St Eugene are proud of its history its community ministries and accomplishments but we are even more optimistic about what the future holds for our Parish We have faced challenges and have some today but our faith in God and one another has consistently seen us through to brighter outcomes and a deeper commitment to our mission More importantly we are excited by the prospect of joining with a new pastor and shaping the next stage of Saint Eugene s future We aspire to offer our new pastor a welcoming parish family a strong foundation of lay leadership and resources and members who seek personal connection and growth
