College Essay Writing Workshop

Summer 2014 PREP FOR SUCCESS College Essay Writing Workshop Testimonials Students “By the time senior year came, my essay was 100%  complete... I watched as all my friends stressed out in September. Meanwhile, I wasn’t worrying at all. The workshop also motivated me to complete my applications early. This definitely made my senior year easier than everyone else’s. I had confidence in my essay, which put my mind at ease. I strongly suggest taking advantage of this workshop…I promise, it   doesn't get any better!”   “The College Essay Workshop is definitely something everyone should take advantage of. It made my first semester of my senior year a lot easier. When I started senior year, I had one less thing to worry about. The instructors are great! They really help you out and keep in touch with you till your essay is completed to perfection.” There were some big changes last year to the Common Application essay—five new essay prompts and a strongly enforced word limit were introduced. Colleges want to see essays that clearly and concisely distinguish students through their own unique voices. They want to know something apart from courses, grades, and test scores. After two years of research the Common Application Board of Directors created five new prompts. These prompts are meant to inspire and structure student essays, helping them to stand out in a sea of applicants with similar résumés and transcripts. Since our inception in the summer of 2010 our goal here at Prep for Success—in conjunction with St. Anthony’s High School—has been to help rising seniors masterfully compose a unique and effective college essay before the stress of senior year commences—guiding them from the brainstorming and outlining stages straight through completion and final edits. With a team of talented high school English teachers and Guidance counselors working together, we have already helped hundreds of students through this daunting process and look forward to helping many more. 1 “The college essay workshop helped me tremendously. My essay was finished in August, and that took a lot of stress off my shoulders…it encourages you to do the college application process early. Senior year is filled with stress, and the fact that I didn’t have to worry about my essay was awesome. This workshop was amazing and definitely worth it.” Parents “A program well worth doing! Our son's college essay was complete and ready to go before he began his senior year, and he got into his first choice college! It doesn't get any better!” “My daughter participated in the course…We highly recommend it, without reservation! This program allowed our daughter to formulate an outstanding essay, which by the way, didn’t detract from the summer’s activities. By the fall, the essay was done and it's one less anxiety provoking issue for your child, as well as yourselves.”

Summer 2014 What is the College Essay Writing Workshop? The workshop begins as a three-hour working session at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington. During this time students will be assigned a college essay writing specialist. We have carefully selected these writing specialists and their credentials support their expertise in this area. The student-to-teacher ratio will be approximately 10 to 1. This workshop will take students from concept formation to preparing the rough draft. The remainder of the program will continue with a one-on-one on-line exchange (via email) between teacher and student to refine the college essay over the course of the next four-six weeks. About halfway through the process teachers will be available for an additional individual face-to-face meeting—more than likely to be held again at St. Anthony’s High School. These meetings will be scheduled based on the individual needs of each student and the availability of the teacher. By the end of the six weeks a final essay will be completed (as long as students have followed the calendar of due dates given to them at the commencement of the program) and will be e-mailed to both student and parent, and senior year can begin with one less stress!
