The Value of a Number
Lesson Objective
The students will be able to identify the value of each digit in a given number from ones to millions.
Background Information for Teacher
Student Prior Knowledge
Student should understand place value.
Plain sheets of paper/cardboard
Prepare ahead of time: Example sheets of paper with 7-9 digit numbers, some with commas; randomly underline one number on
each sheet of paper, the write each place value written out on a sheet of the same size paper (ones, tens, hundreds, one-thousands,
ten-thousands, etc.) to be used as “labels”..
Step-by-Step Guided Lesson
Step 1: Start Video
(Tips: Interact with the video by pausing, to ask questions or discuss information viewed with student.)
Step 2: Teach Lesson
Display a 7 to 9-digit number for the student to read aloud. Use a number with an interesting meaning (Distance from a planet to the
Sun, etc.) Ask the student if they can guess the significance of the number. Allow the student to identify the place value for each digit.
Hand out the example sheets of paper w/digits. Then have the student label the number.
Next have the student complete the worksheet in Step 3.
Once the student has completed the worksheet, discuss the importance of understanding place value, why numbers have different
values, etc.

Step 4: Review. Start the next lesson with the game or activity attached below for review so the student can demonstrate
understanding of this lesson before moving forward.
