99th Men’s State Amateur Championship Mountain Brook Club, Mountain Brook, AL June 11-14, 2015 Leading after every round, defending champion Will Cannon successfully defended his title in the 99th State Amateur Championship at Mountain Brook Club. The UAB rising senior and Hoover resident had rounds of 65-68-7268--272, good for 12-under-par 272, and a four-shot win over Patrick Martin (68-71-69-68--276). He becomes the first player since Montgomery resident and former University of Alabama golfer Hunter Hamrick to win back-to-back State Amateurs, with Hamrick doing so in 2009 and ‘10. Cannon indicated he hoped to go for three in a row next year when the 100th State Amateur will be hosted by the Country Club of Birmingham. Sam Farlow is the only player to have won three in a row (1986-88). Cannon had a share of the lead after round one with Matt Johnson. He then led the rest of the way on his own as he successfully kept his challengers at bay. Martin, the reigning State High School 7A individual champion, recent Spain Park High School graduate and soon-to-be freshman on the Vanderbilt golf team, put some pressure on Cannon, getting within two shots on multiple occasions, but could get no closer in what turned into a two-horse race. University of Alabama rising senior and Mountain Brook resident Tom Lovelady fired the low round of the day, a 66, to move to Will Cannon five-under-par overall and a third place finish. Cannon’s UAB teammate Taylor Eyster, who played for Mountain Brook High School and will be a sophomore for the UAB Blazers, finished in fourth place. But it was Cannon’s day. After three pars to open his round, he caught fire with birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 6. After a bogey on hole 8, he rebounded by a birdie on No. 9 to go out in 33 and lead Martin, who started with three birdies in his first five holes, by three. Cannon played the back nine in one-under-par with bogeys on holes 10 and 15 against birdies on 11, 13 and 18, to close out in style in front of a large group of spectators. “It really is very special to win the State Amateur,” a jubilant Cannon said. “It makes all the hard 19 work I put in worthwhile. This is why I do work hard…for days like this. “Patrick put a lot of pressure on me and I was glad to hold him off. I was trying my best to not worry about what he was doing and to play my game, stick to my game plan, but he made it tough. He just didn’t make any mistakes.” Martin was pleased with his performance. “I hit a lot of good shots, but it was tough to get at pins. I’m pleased though with my game and my consistency. 33rd State Four-Ball Championship Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club, Killen, AL May 6-9, 2015 The team of Matt Gourgeot and Tony Olive won the 33rd State Four-Ball Championship at Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen. On the final day, Gourgeot, who lives in Decatur and played golf the University of North Alabama, and Olive, who lives in Florence, first beat William Sellers and Steven Setterstrom Jr., both on the University of Alabama golf team, in the semifinals 3 & 2 and then beat Joey Holley and Chase Rogers by 5 & 3 to win this Alabama Golf Association championship. Holley and Rogers beat Patrick Twesme and Austin Sparks in their semifinal 1 up. Gourgeot, 29, plays golf at Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, while Olive, 55, plays at Cypress Lakes in Muscle Shoals. It was their first time to pair up in the State Four-Ball and it’s safe to say it won’t be their last. “In the final we got off to a hot start (4 up through eight holes) and that was huge as we never let them back in the match,” Gourgeot said. “College kids may be used to six matches in four days, but we are not. We got a little tired the second 18 both days, but got through it.” It is the first state title for both players. Gourgeot said he made a lot of birdies in the match play format and he was freed up to do so by Olive’s consistency. “Tony understands the game so well. He hits it straight, doesn’t Tony Olive (left) Matt Gourgeot (right) 28 make many mistakes and is usually in every hole. That’s key. He’s a really smart, great partner.” Gourgeot used to play Turtle Point while playing on the golf team at UNA every week, but it has been a number of years since he played there. “This is really special for us both,” Gourgeot continued. “I made it to the semifinals of last year’s State Match Play (before bowing out) and I know what that felt like. I’m thrilled to have gone on from there.”

18th State Senior Championship Musgrove Country Club, Jasper, AL May 15-17, 2015 David Hancock shot the lowest score of the week as he ran away with 18th State Senior Amateur Championship at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper. Hancock of Greenville carded a closing 67, added to his earlier rounds of 71-70, to finish on 208, five-under-par. Hancock competed in the 50-56 age group and won that age group by nine from Claud Cooper of Birmingham (71-73-73--217). He won the overall title by five from Steve Hudson (69-74-70--213) and Mike Greer (73-72-68--213), both of whom play in the 57-64 age group. Hudson won a multi-hole playoff to capture the 57-64 age group. Wayne Gardner of Mobile shot 71-74-72--217 to win the 65+ age group. This was Hancock’s second win in an AGA championship; he also won the State Senior Four Ball with Ralph Matthews. “I drove the ball very well again,” Hancock said. “I kept it in play and had (birdie) chances all day. I didn’t make any mistakes. No three-putts all week. I could have shot a really, really low score. David Hancock “I’ve been in the lead in the final group on the final day multiple times and not got it done. I’ve not been able to close the door. I finally got one done. My brother (Phil Hancock) has won just about every AGA championship (State Amateur and State Junior). It’s very nice to get one too. “ Hancock credited Moore’s Mill 32 (in Auburn) teaching professional Will Blackmon with a helping him with his game. “I got a lesson last week and it really helped me. This win has inspired me to keep working harder and harder on my game.”

70th State Junior Championship Azalea City Golf Course, Mobile, AL July 28-30, 2015 William Buhl of Fairhope ended up winning the 70th State Junior Championship at Azalea City Golf Course in Mobile after rounds of 69-67-72--208, eightunder-par, by four shots from Todd DeZoort and Alex Green, but for most of the final round the margin was a lot closer. Tuscaloosa’s Jake DeZoort was tied with Buhl, 18, with three holes to go, but his second shot flew 20 yards over the green on No. 16 leading to a double bogey against Buhl’s birdie and the margin was now three. Defending champion Alex Green of Point Clear would move into a tie for second after DeZoort made bogey on the final hole. Buhl will be a freshman on the golf team at the University of Arkansas next year and has won the State High School 3-A Individual Championship the last two years playing for Bayside Academy. He played in his first, and last, State Junior as he will age out next year. “The thing I learned the most today (Thursday) was patience,” Buhl said. “I found myself thinking ahead too many times and that put me in a hole on the front nine as I was pressing as I got off to a slow start.” It was certainly an up-anddown contest between Buhl and DeZoort. After a first hole bogey, DeZoort was quickly three behind, but he had reduced the deficit to just one through seven holes. Buhl made his first birdie of the round on the tough ninth and was two ahead as they made the turn. However, his approach flew the green on No. 10 resulting in a double bogey and a tie. A two-putt birdie on No. 11 put Buhl back in front, before an incredible turn of events on No. 12. Buhl found tree trouble and was 25 yards short of the green in three on the par 4 12th. Staring double bogey in the face, he pitched in for an unlikely par. DeZoort made birdie and they were tied again. “That (chip in) was the shot that kept me in it. Anything could have happened there,” Buhl said. DeZoort birdied the next hole to take the lead for the first time, but he gave it right back with a bogey on No. 14. Things changed again on No. 15 as Buhl found the water with his second shot resulting in bogey and they were tied again. Then came the turn of events on No. 16 which put Buhl firmly in the drivers seat. DeZoort will play golf for the University of Alabama in the fall of 2016 and recently participated in the U.S. Junior Amateur and qualified for match play before losing on the final hole in the Round of 64, felt like he “barely missed a shot, but it just wasn’t to be.” “I had 140 yards out of the rough into 16 and it flew the green by 20 yards with a gap wedge. I couldn’t believe that. I was dead 36 William Buhl back there. “I really felt like I could have shut the door a few times, but never made enough birdies.” Green, who shot 64 in last year’s final round at Gadsden CC to win the State Junior by two shots from Steven Setterstrom Jr., started out strong with two birdies on the first two holes, but couldn’t get any closer and went three over par for holes 5-7. There was no coming back for him and only a late charge got him a tied for second This was the final junior tournament for Buhl and Green, with Green set to start his college golf career at the University of Alabama next month, but DeZoort, 17, will get one more crack at it next year. Andrew Graves of Mobile won the 14-15 age group, with Jacob LeCroy of Anniston second. Mac Scott of Birmingham won the 12-13 age group, with Birmingham’s Evans Gross second.

15th State Match Play Championship Montgomery Country Club, Montgomery, AL August 5-8, 2015 Patrick Martin has achieved a great deal in his relatively young golf career, but he had yet to win an Alabama Golf Association State Championship. He rectified that this year by claiming the 15th State Match Play Championship at Montgomery Country Club in a well-contested match with Lee Hodges. Martin will be an incoming freshman at Vanderbilt and this marked his last tournament of the summer before heading off to start his college career. The morning of the final day saw him see off former Vanderbilt golfer Richard Douglas of Trussville in the semifinal, going two extra holes to the 20th hole, before edging Douglas. In the other semifinal current UAB golfer Hodges of Elkmont took down Jake DeZoort, 17, of Tuscaloosa, who will be a freshman on the University of Alabama golf team in the fall of 2016, by a score of 2 up. In the final, after a brief break for lunch, Martin was always ahead and staked himself to a 3 up lead through 13 holes over Hodges. The match and championship looked to be his in a stroll, but Hodges had other ideas rolling in birdie putts on Nos. 14 and 17 to take the match to the final hole. Both players hit the 18th green in regulation, but Martin was close to 50 feet above the hole, while Hodges had around 10 feet left for birdie. Martin’s putt gathered pace and ended up six feet below the cup. Hodges could not hole his putt to force extra holes and Martin made his uphill come-backer to claim the title. “Those (the semifinal and final) were two very good matches,” Martin, who graduated from Spain Park High School in May, said. “I had to play well in both. Lots of good shots, from all players, were on display.” Martin, who finished second in the State Amateur earlier this summer to two-time champion Will Cannon, had to dig deep to close Patrick Martin 42 out the win. “I’ve learned a lot this summer and in this championship about staying in the moment with every shot. I’ve been wanting to win a golf tournament for a while and it was my week to do it.” He thanked his swing instructor, Wayne Flint, and his Dad, Greg Martin, for helping him work on his game. The championship was a true test of endurance as Martin had to survive six matches over three days to lift the trophy.

27th State Mid-Amateur Championship Wynlakes Golf & Country Club, Montgomery, AL September 18-20, 2015 Jeff Taylor led wire-to-wire as he captured the 27th State Mid-Amateur Championship at his home course, Wynlakes Golf & Country Club in Montgomery, after rounds of 68-70-73–211, fiveunder-par. Freeman Fite of Anniston (70-73-71) and Shaw Pritchett of Montgomery (72-71-71) finished tied for second on 214. The last time Wynlakes hosted the Mid-Amateur in 2010, Taylor was also in the thick of the action, eventually losing in a playoff to Steve Hudson. This year, he went one better. He started with an opening birdie, after two towering shots to reach the par 5 in two, and added another birdie on No. 16. In-between, he had bogeys on holes 3, 4 and 11, but managed to get the job done. Former University of Alabama golfer Fite got as close as one through 13 holes, but a bogey on 14 coupled with Taylor’s birdie on 16 meant the eventual difference was three shots. “I know it sounds funny, but I was struggling with my swing so much (in the final round) that I was more focused on that (than the situation),” Taylor said. “Normally I hit a lot more drivers than I did, but I was struggling with what is normally my go-to club.” No matter as his 3-wood stood him in good stead as he made a lot of solid pars to consolidate his position and win the day. “I didn’t know where I stood (in the championship), which is a good thing because I’m a naturally nervous and anxious individuAL I said to myself if I could shoot level par (in the final round) I’d be happy with that and if somebody Jeff Taylor 48 beat me, they beat me. “I enjoy golf. Compettion is fun, but I don’t want to do it all the time. Playing at home is great for me. “My joy lies in my family (his wife Emily and their two children).” Taylor played college golf for Wallace State Junior College from 1989-91 and Troy University the following two years. Born and raised in Montgomery, he now lives adjacent to the 15th green at Wynlakes. He came into the championship riding the confidence of shooting a 65 last week with his usual group of buddies. “I was more nervous the first two days for some reason. I just told myself whatever happens happens (in the final round).” What happened is he is now a State champion. “Some redemption from last time here (when he lost to Steve Hudson in a playoff for the 2010 State Mid-Amateur.)”

She fired rounds of 73-79-76-228 to be beat fellow Tuscaloosa native Lucie King, who shot 7975-79--233, by five. This AGA championship was open to ladies who are 50 years of age and older and featured three rounds of stroke play. West played in both the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur championships last year. She advanced to the quarter finals of the U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur. In the second round she had a big lead, but stumbled down the stretch. This did not deter her, as she played her first 14 holes in her final round in level par, with three birdies against three bogeys, and opened up a big lead again. However, she struggled on the 16th hole for the second day in a row, but no matter as she had a lot of strokes to play with. “I was so pleased with how patient I stayed in the (final) round. I tried hard not to get ahead of myself. The one time I allowed myself to wonder (where she stood in the championship) was on 16 and that did not go well, but I finished with two good pars on two tough holes,” West said. “I love to work hard (on my game) and it is nice to see that work pay off. There are the names of so many people on the (Wom- 58 en’s State Senior) trophy that I admire. What a thrill for me (to have her named added).” Susan West

52nd Girls State Junior Championship Heron Lakes Country Club, Mobile, AL July 7-9, 2015 At just 13 years old, Michaela Morard of Huntsville is believed to be the youngest ever winner of Girls State Junior which she won at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile. And this was the 52nd playing of this state championship. Morard carded rounds of 7672-72--220 to edge Micheala Williams of Athens (74-75-72--221). She played up in the 14-15 age group, so she was eligible to win the overall title, along with girls in 16-18. Morard must like Mobile as she is the reigning State 6A-7A individual champion shooting sevenunder-par at Magnolia Grove in Mobile as a seventh grader in May. In a close contest, Morard fell back after back-to-back double bogeys early in her round on Nos. 2 and 3. “I counted up how many holes were left -- 15 -- and told myself I needed to birdie four or more of them, with no bogeys, to get back in it.” Her math proved prophetic as she actually added five birdies in holes 4, 6, 11, 12 and 15, against a lone bogey on No. 13, to play her final 15 holes four-under-par and win by one. She attends Huntsville Middle School and plays golf for Huntsville High School. She plays golf at both Valley Hill and The Ledges, both in Huntsville. “It means a lot to win as I’m Michaela Morard only 13 and I think (one of the only) other people to win it under (age) 15 was Gabi Oubre (of Mobile), when she was 14.” Morard entered the day with a one shot lead over Williams and that was her margin of victory. They were paired together along with Spain Park High School’s Jordan Susce, who led after the first round and finished tied third with Grand Bay’s Aleesha Smith. After Morard’s poor start Williams took the lead and matched birdies on Nos. 5 and 17 against bogeys on 10 and 16. However, Morard pegged her back and won by the slimmest of margins. Williams, who is from Athens, finished second in the Girls State 61 Junior last year and third in 2013, as well as tied second individually in the 2015 6A-7A State High School Championship, is second after a 74-75--149. Brooke Gober of Orange Beach won the 9-11 age group (nine hole scores of 39-40-40--19); while Carolina MacVicar of Tuscaloosa won the 12-13 (83-87-81-251), by one from Berry’s Erika Allen (86-83-83--252).

25th Women’s State Stroke Play Championship Shoal Creek, Shoal Creek, AL July 21-23 2015 Last year Elaine Wood won the Women’s State Amateur title; this year she claimed the Women’s State Stroke Play Championship. After a multi-hour rain delay, she overtook overnight leaders Alison Hovatter and Micheala Williams to capture the 25th playing of this state championship, with Shoal Creek the host this year. Wood of Spanish Fort and the University of Montevallo fired rounds of 71-7572--218, good for a two-over-par total and a Elaine Wood one shot win 64 over Athens’ Williams (73-72-74-219). Overnight leader and defending champion Hovatter of Meridianville and Ole Miss shot 72-6980 to finish tied third with former two-time Girls State Junior champion Gabi Oubre of Mobile and Mississippi State (74-75-72--221). Wood got off to a hot start with birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 6 before a double bogey on No. 9 slowed her momentum. An up-and-down back nine saw her mix birdies on Nos. 11, 15 and 16 against four bogeys, but it proved just enough to edge Williams, 17, who finished second in the Girls State Junior last year and third in 2013, as well as tied second individually in the 2015 6A-7A State High School Championship.

83rd Women’s State Amateur Championship Gadsden Country Club, Gadsden, AL June 24-26, 2015 Heather Nail defeated Kathy Hartwiger in the 18-hole final of the 83rd Women’s State Amateur Championship at Gadsden Country Club by a score of 1 up. In a closely contested match, Nail led most of the way, but a resilient Hartwiger took her all the way to the final green before coming up just short. Nail, 19, hails from Hartselle and just finished her sophomore year on the golf team at the University of Mobile. She won four times this past year and was named Second Team, All-American in NAIA. This is Nail’s second state title, having won the Women’s State Four Ball Championship (with Suzanne Stanley) in 2012. In match played in searing temperatures on a beautifully conditioned course, Hartwiger, who has won this title a record-breaking 10 times, was trying to add to her legend. She started with an opening birdie to go 1 up, but it would prove to be her only lead of the day as Nail responded with a 20 foot putt for a birdie two on the next hole to square the match. The next three holes were halved with pars, before a Hartwiger three-putt from the fringe allowed Nail to go 1 up through six holes. She would never relinquish her lead. Both players struggled to bogey fives on No. 9 with Nail still 1 up. Hartwiger struggled on the next hole as well, conceding it to Nail, who doubled her lead. It would stay that way until an upand-down for par on No. 15 allowed Hartwiger to cut into Nail’s lead, but an errant Hartwiger second on 16 gave the 2 up advantage Heather Nail right back to Nail. However, the true champion that she is, Hartwiger captured the 17th with a rock solid par. But an errant tee shot far left on the closing hole, followed by Nail’s drive sailing right down the middle, left Hartwiger, literally, with a very tough hill to climb. So it was that Nail was able to three-putt, but still tied the hole and thus won the championship match 1 up. “I thought it was so key to keep the momentum going when I got ahead,” Nail said. “I was able to make some good putts and that’s what mattered. I really wanted to win this championship, but knew I would face a tough match as Kathy is a great, great champion. “I just felt all week that this course fit my eye. I felt like I was able to figure out the greens well. I’m truly blessed to win this championship, especially against someone who is the Jack Nicklaus of 71 Alabama golf. She’s the best ever.” Hartwiger, 49, admitted that the heat and playing four matches in three days took its toll on her, but would take nothing away from Nail’s win. “Heather played a great match and was very consistent. She gave me very few openings and when she did, I wasn’t sharp enough to take advantage. “I don’t play and practice anywhere near as much as I used to and that’s OK. I have my experience (to fall back on) and whatever happens, happens. I still have an awesome family that loves me very much.” She did leave with a parting salvo though. “I’m not done yet. I still think I have one or two (championships) left in me. I just the need some cooler temperatures.”

Luther B. (Barney) Lanier received the Joe H. King Award in 2015 Luther B. (Barney) Lanier was honored this year with the Alabama Golf Association’s signal award, the Joe H. King Award. Lanier has long been associated with the game of golf in Alabama and the Country Club of Birmingham. A fine player in his own right, he has competed in three U.S. Amateur Championships (1982, ‘83 and ‘84), won the 1971 BGA Junior Championship and has won the Country Club of Birmingham InvitationAL He has served on numerous Alabama Golf Association committees, and was AGA president in 1997-98. He has also served various roles at the Country Club of Birmingham including chairman, as well as chairing multiple golf course renovation committees at the club over the years. Lanier is a member of the Country Club of Birmingham and will receive his award at a recognition dinner at the club on March 6. “It is such a humbling thing to receive an award named for someone who was such a mentor to me. He was a person I always looked up to. He was ‘Mr. Golf’ when I was coming up in the game. “This award is the highest award given by the Alabama Golf Association and it is not given every year. When I look at the names who have been humbled to receive the award, I’m not sure I belong in such esteemed company. “Golf has been good to me, as Joe King was always good to me. I’ve been delighted to be involved (playing the game and administra- tively) for wow, what must be 30 years now. And I hope to be involved for many more to come. In Memoriam: Jean Miller Jean Miller WAS women’s golf in Alabama, and had been such for many, many years. After a brave fight, she passed away in June and will be dearly missed by golfers far and wide. Especially all the little girls, many of whom are mothers themselves now, who she started in the game of golf. Even later in life, she continued to enthusiastically promote the game through the Ladies Birmingham Golf Association, LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, the Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation, the AGA and other groups she had an integral role in. She received many accolades along the way, and I’ll get to them in due course, but she was far more interested in seeing a young girl’s smile as she made solid contact with the ball -- or made contact at all -- as Miller knew then she had another golfer for the future in her midst. When, in 2012, the Alabama Golf Association recognized her with the Joe H. King Award, their highest award, she told me: “It gives me so much pleasure to watch the little girls learn the game. Beginners who start to advance and, as my great friend Joann Bedow used to say, you give them clues, and their faces just light up when they hit one just right in the sweet spot. Those smiles, that happiness when they know they have done it right. I just Jean Miller love those moments.” Miller, a fine golfer in her own right, spent a lifetime giving back to the game. “I take almost a selfish pleasure (in helping),” she continued with a smile across her lips and a sparkle in her eye. “I have been fortunate that I do what I want to do and that is to help (grow the game of golf). “I like being useful. It’s fun to help and that’s the reason I do it.” Miller, though it sounds simplistic, always got things done and she was so integral to groups such as LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, that introduces the game to girls from ages 7-17. She also worked with the USGA for over 25 years. She served on the Junior Girls Championship committee for 16 years and then their Women’s Committee. You name it, she did it, and always with no fuss or fanfare. One of my favorites was when 81 she recalled an endearing story of traveling to the U.S. Girls Junior many times, with many of girls invariably flying via Atlanta airport. “You could pick out the girls (at the airport). They were invariably tall and looked a little lonely. One year (1994) I met Marcy Newton who was holding a teddy bear and had a tear in her eye. Her parents were from rural South Carolina and she was traveling on her own for the first time. I befriended her. “I saw her again the next year in the airport. She’d grown up a lot, but still was a little unsure of herself. Do you know what, she won that year’s championship!” Always with more energy and drive than most people half her age, she will be truly missed, but did she ever live her life. What a joy it must have been for this humble, self-effacing lady to even have had an inkling of the lives

In Memoriam: Jean Miller (Continued) she touched through golf and her tireless love of promoting the game. Some of her accolades follow: * She was elected into the Birmingham Golf Association’s Hall of Fame in 1980. * She was president of the Women’s Alabama Golf Association in 1991-92, winning their “Special Award” in 1994. * She received the Joe H. King Award in 2012. * She worked with the USGA for over 25 years. She served on the Junior Girls Championship committee for 16 years and then their Women’s Committee for 25 years. Many, many people wished to remember Jean. A select few follow: “’I didn’t know much about Jean Miller’s personal life but, if golf does mirror life, then her personal life had to be meaningful because her golf life certainly was.  It is said that perhaps the nicest thing you can say about a person is that when they are gone, they will be missed.  Jean will be sorely missed.” Buford McCarty, longtime Executive Director of the Alabama Golf Association. “She has made a lasting impression on SO MANY people and helped women’s/girl’s golf in Alabama in ways that we will never be able to measure!  I loved her and her graceful and kind way. So many wonderful memories. She will be missed.” Kathy Hartwiger, 10-time Women’s State Amateur champion. “Such sad news, but it was such a blessing to have known 82 Jean and to have benefitted from all the wonderful gifts she gave to women’s golf. She will be missed, but her legacy will live on in every little girl that plays golf.” Five-time Women’s State Amateur champion Chris Spivey. “She was the definition of female golf in this state. We will all miss her wit, charm, dedication and ability to get things done to foster the love of golf. There will never be a more dedicated lady to golf for women and girls. I will be always grateful to have been her friend. I will remember watching her make birdie after birdie while laughing and talking, hole by hole and never miss a swing! What a wonderful woman.” One of her numerous golfing friends, Warren Cain.

In Memoriam: Jackie Cummings Born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Jackie Cummings, a true legend in the amateur game, passed away in early August, aged 80. Below is taken from a story about Cummings in Ian Thompson’s book, Alabama Golf Association: The First 100 Years. Ironically enough, Cummings attended the University of Alabama, but never hit a shot for the Crimson Tide’s golf team. “I was, what you’d call, a late bloomer,” Cummings said. He’s certainly got that right. Winning the 1990 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship puts him in select company. Cummings didn’t touch a club until he was in high school, even though his parents were members of the old Tuscaloosa Country Club. “A lot of my friends at Tuscaloosa (now Central) High School were skipping afternoon classes to go play golf. I wanted to join them. I was probably about a sophomore. I never had any lessons; I still haven’t to to this day. I just kind of picked it up along the way.” Next came college. “A lot of my good buddies were going to Alabama, so I decided to join them. I was a lousy junior player and didn’t rate a tryout for a place on the golf team. I still played and practiced, but I never did try out.” Some of the players on the team at that time included M.C. Fitts, Buddy Manderson and Jackie Maness. Soon after college Cummings got married and didn’t have a lot of time for golf. His father helped Jackie Cummings him get into an International dealership - selling and leasing large trucks. As he became established in business, he had more time to devote to golf. “As I said before, I never took any lessons, but I did read a lot. Ben Hogan was my idol. I learned so much from his book (Five Fundamentals of Golf).” He became a fixture on the local golf scene, winning his first tournament - the Montgomery Country Club Invitational - in 1958. “I remember I beat Dick Pride in the final (it was matchplay back then). His son Dicky, who plays on the PGA Tour, is my godson.” Other wins followed the same year at Indian Hills and Selma Country Club (where he has a span of 39 years between his first win and last win in 1997). He was now seen as one of the players to beat. Cummings would win three State Amateur Championships, his first coming in 1961 over the 83 West Course at The Country Club of Birmingham. He would beat one of his Tuscaloosa rivals, M.C. Fitts, by one shot. Rounds of 69, 71 and 73 had Cummings comfortably in charge, but he limped home with a final round of 80, which proved to be just enough to still win. His other State Amateur wins came in 1965 at The Country Club of Mobile, where rain meant the championship had to be called at 54 holes, and at Vestavia Country Club in 1971, when two players who would go on to play on the tour - Mike Smith and Charlie Krenkel - came in tied second. “My biggest disappointment was not winning at Indian Hills (still his home course) in 1966. I had a five-shot lead going into the final round, but I shot 77 and Mac McLendon shot a 70 to beat me. But, over the years, I’ve won more than I’ve lost.” He also finished second in the State Amateur to Craig Clemons in 1970. He noted that another disap-

In Memoriam: Jackie Cummings (Continued) pointment was never winning the prestigious Country Club of Birmingham National Invitational; again he had two runner-up finishes there. He did win the Country Club of Mobile Invitational three times 1961, 62 and 68. Cummings had a tremendous amount of success in the sixties, but his game went into a decline by the mid-seventies. “I was working hard, plus I had back trouble. I ruptured a disk in my back and had to have surgery. This forced me to get into better shape as I was put on a physical training program and I did a lot of walking as well. By the time I turned 50 I was in better shape than I was at age 40. Hence, my golf game picked up too.” He was about to enter a new arena - senior golf - one that would show that his golf game never left, but rather was one that improved with age. At age 50 he was now eligible for the Senior Open, but would have to wait another five years to be of age to try for the Senior Amateur. In total Cummings played in seven Senior Opens, making the cut in a very commendable four of them. He had to qualify for four of them and was exempt from 1991 to 93 by virtue of his U.S. Senior Amateur win. His best showing came in 1995 at Cherry Hills when he was the second lowest amateur, just one behind Vinny Giles. Now onto the crowning moment of his golfing career, but it was one for which he nearly missed his qualifying tee time. I’ll let him take up the story once more. “That spring my game wasn’t very good. I’d cracked a wrist and hadn’t been playing very much. I decided to go to Old Waverly in Mississippi to qualify. I’d been there before and thought I knew the way. But come 20 minutes from my tee time I was completely lost and things didn’t look good. Finally a road looked familiar and I thought I’d give it a shot. It was the right road and two minutes before my tee time I pull into the parking lot. I grab my clubs, have my golf shoes in my hand and run to the first tee. “You know, the U.S.G.A. doesn’t mess around about those things. If you’re late, you’re out. I made it just in time and with no practice swing I pushed my tee shot into a ditch and started with a big, fat double bogey. But a strange thing happened after that, I never missed another shot and ended up shooting 70 to qualify by a shot. “So I headed to a place called Carefree, Arizona and the Desert Forest Golf Club. It was hot even though it was in October and the wind was blowing. It was the hardest course ever for a Senior Amateur, with the medalist shooting 150. I shot an 80 the first day, but followed that up with a 74 and made it into matchplay with ease. Things just kept getting better and better for me as the week went on.” He beat two-time Senior Amateur champion Clarence Moore of Winnsboro, S.C. in the quarter-finals and Rick Jones of Youngstown, Ohio in the semifinals to set up a clash with Bobby Clark of Asheville, N.C. 84 “It was (and still is) an 18-hole final and we both played poorly on the front nine after which we were even in the match. I got my game together on the back nine and had seven pars and a birdie to win the match 3 & 2.” Indeed he closed out the championship with the only birdie of the match, a six footer on the par 5 sixteenth. “I felt I could be competitive in the national Senior Amateur as the year before Bob Lowry of Huntsville had lost in the semi-final, as had Amos Jones of Dothan another year. I knew I could play with those guys. You know, it was just my week.” His win gave him a five-year exemption into the championship and he made through into match play every year. Twice he had good runs before losing quarterfinal matches, but now laments the fact that he can’t compete with the younger guys. His record through the years stands alone in statewide circles. Sam Perry and Sam Farlow may have won more State Amateurs (four to Cummings’ three), but no one in the state has likely won as many invitationals as Jackie Cummings. When asked exactly how many he threw his hands up and said he had no idea, but he did reel off the following list just for starters: Tuscaloosa seven times, Florence once, Vestavia three times, Selma three, Mobile three, etc., etc. He received the Joe H. King Award in 2001 and was inducted into the Birmingham Golf Association’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

Long-time Alabama Golf Association Executive Director Buford McCarty retired at the end of 2015 Long-time Alabama Golf Association Executive Director Buford McCarty retired at the end of 2015. The Alabama Golf Association has been in existence since 1915, but it was not until December 1985 that its first, and only, paid executive director was hired. McCarty, when he retired, was in the job for right at 30 years. His mark has been immense. The State Amateur Championship began in 1915 and will celebrate 100 years in 2016 (it was not played for two years during World War I). The State Junior began in 1946 and the State Four Ball in 1983. All other championships have been added under McCarty’s watch. They are the State Mid-Amateur (started in 1989); State Senior Four Ball (started in 1995); State Net (started in 1996, but discontinued a few years later); State Senior Amateur (started in 1998); and State Match Play (started in 2001). Of course, the AGA has also run the five women’s state championship since 2008 when the Women’s Alabama Golf Association merged with the AGA to form one entity. The AGA also runs and/or officiates at countless other events including the State High School championships and prominent college events such as the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and the Graeme McDowell/Shoal Creek Invite, plus all area USGA qualifiers. Also, McCarty is the Executive Secretary of the Southern Golf Association, so his role is a dual one. “I am very proud of the Southern Amateur, our flagship event. While always a prominent regional championship, it has risen to a top 10 ranking in the world, currently at No. 8, with only the U.S. Ama- teur, Western Amateur and NCAA’s ahead of it in this country.” Other services offered by the AGA are myriad including the rating of golf courses, a resource for Rules questions, statewide computing of the GHIN handicapping system, seminars in regards to their tournament pairings program and Rules of the Game, administering Player of the Year points, etc., etc. And, of course, their most visible service is conducting the previously mentioned state golf championships. McCarty’s affiliation with the AGA goes back to 1980. He was appointed as an associate director that year, at the urging of Jim Spader, AGA president at the time. The venerable Joe King was the executive director of the AGA, which he did on a volunteer basis. “I was a member at Riverchase Country Club at the time and was appointed as a liaison between the club and the AGA for the State Amateur we were hosting. Richard 86 Anthony was president of the AGA and he approached me about a fulltime position with the AGA. My circumstances were such that I wanted to do it and could do it. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time,” McCarty recalled. In recent years McCarty, although he would humbly say he was just doing his job, has been rightfully recognized for a job very well done. “All I was doing for the most part was taking care of the steering wheel while a lot of successful and smart AGA Officers and Directors were my navigators,” McCarty said. Upon finding out he had been chosen to be a recipient of the Joe H. King Award in 2009, he was moved to tears. This is akin to the AGA’s Hall of Fame and is their top award. “Joe was my mentor and I would not have been doing what I’ve been doing for the past 25 years (and counting) without him.” McCarty is very proud that the USGA asked him to come to its headquarters in Far Hills, N.J., for a number of years to teach a class entitled “How to Conduct a Championship.” It’s quite the commendation when golf’s governing body asks you to educate USGA interns and staff members on the best practices to run championships. Plus, in 2011 he received the USGA’s Ike Grainger Award for 25 years of service to the USGA. And in 2014 the Birmingham Golf Association inducted him into their Hall of Fame. McCarty’s influence has seen the AGA grow beyond all recognition during his time in charge.

Andy Priest named as Executive Director of the Alabama Golf Association It was announced in 2014 that long-time Alabama Golf Association Executive Director Buford McCarty would retire at the end of 2015. Andy Priest of Pinehurst, N.C. was announced as his replacement and he officially began his role Nov. 1. The Alabama Golf Association has been in existence since 1915, but it was not until December 1985 that its first paid executive director was hired. Of course, the AGA has also run the five women’s state championship since 2010 when the Women’s Alabama Golf Association merged with the AGA to form one entity. The AGA also runs and/or officiates at countless other events including the State High School championships and prominent college events such as the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and the Graeme McDowell/Shoal Creek Invite, plus all area USGA qualifiers. Priest’s first love growing up was baseball and he played college baseball at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. However, his father, on faculty at N.C. State, introduced him to the game as there is a par 3 course on the campus in Raleigh, N.C. At Campbell, his enjoyment of golf was furthered by the fact that there is a golf course on that campus too and he played many a round on it. “It was my sophomore year at Campbell and I came to the realization that professional baseball was not in my future. I already loved golf and when I went on to graduate school at Campbell I took a position as as a Grad Assistant for Operations. That got me connected with the University golf course.” One thing led to another and longtime men’s and women’s head golf coach at Campbell, John Crooks, advised him to check into an internship at the Carolinas Golf Association. Priest applied and got the job in 1997. When his internship ended, the CGA didn’t have a full-time position available. He found a job, uniting his passion for the game of golf and its operations, with the International Junior Golf Tour based in Hilton Head Island, S.C. He stayed with them for two and a half years before his boss at the CGA, Jack Nance, contacted him to see if he would come back to the CGA. Priest accepted and has been with the CGA, under Nance, since 2000. While there he has overseen many varied roles and had risen to second in command, as Assistant Executive Director. The CGA has a full-time staff of 14 people and runs upwards of 250 tournaments a year across North and South Carolina with 700 member clubs and 140,000 individual members. Suffice to say, it’s a big operation. When McCarty first announced he would be retiring, the job as his successor was posted. Priest was interested and applied. “Such positions are few and far between, even more so in this geographical area. The opportunity was intriguing and I threw my name into the hat. I’d gone as far as I can go here (the CGA) and I wanted to do more.” 87 Priest aims to bring his own ideas and thoughts to the role, as well as keeping what is already in place working well. “I’m extremely excited to get started. I’m humbled by the support I’ve received here as well as there (in Alabama). I can’t wait to get started.” He expects to visit the AGA multiple times in the coming months before getting started full-time in November. Carrying a 10 index, and playing about 20 rounds a year, Priest is not the best player in his family. His wife, Tiffany, is a former golf club professional, who applied for and received her amateur status back. She has played in the U.S. Women’s MidAmateur and is also involved in golf administration as she is the Director of Women’s Golf at the CGA. “Tiffany is making the biggest sacrifice for me to take on the role at the Alabama Golf Association. She has worked for the CGA for 14 years. She’s a USGA Rules official (as is her husband) and loves golf administration, so she’s giving up a lot.” Priest indicated he thought she would be involved in local golf in some fashion, but that was to be determined in due course.
