Urban Brain and Body was founded in 2012 as a wellness center focusing on the mind-body connection.   It is our belief that health and happiness stems from a strong foundation of both the mind and the body.  Our main focus is on neurofeedback and behavioral health.  By coupling neurofeedback with other health and wellness practices our clients are leading healthier, more fulfilling lives.  We found collaborating with other health and wellness professionals served our clients much more than we ever dreamed.

Connections
Shortly after opening our doors, our focus on connecting went way beyond the mind and body.  We partner with all types of health and wellness companies in order to ensure our clients are taken care of to the best of our ability.  We also noticed a need for uniting these providers to better serve our clients.  Thus, UBB Wellness Network was born.  We also noticed a need for business help for these same professionals.  UBB Startup was developed.  We are deeply involved in the health and wellness world and are constantly looking for ways to improve the lives of our clients and our collaborators.

Neurofeedback Training
Neurofeedback has been such a success for us we developed our neurofeedback training courses and workshops to help spread the word.  The information available is wonderful, if you know where to look.  We found that most of the time it is difficult to understand just what neurofeedback is by doing online research.  That's where we come in.  Our goal is to help practitioners and potential clients understand just what neurofeedback is, how it works and how it can help.

Our commitment above all is to educate, enhance, and better the lives of our clients and collaborating providers.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback (NFB, also known as neurobiofeedback or EEG Biofeedback) is a type of biofeedback that uses sensors placed on the scalp to measure brain waves. NFB uses realtime displays of EEG to exhibit brain activity and teach self-regulation.  A signal is produced that can be used as feedback on brain activity to teach self-regulation.  NFB is commonly provided using video and/or sound in order to provide positive and negative feedback for brain activity.

Neurofeedback helps the brain function more effectively and more efficiently through guided brain function training. Whether we are talking, focusing, reading, problem solving or any other cognitive, behavioral or emotional function our brains are continually changing frequencies throughout our day.

Using software, neurofeedback gives audio and visual feedback that involves increasing or decreasing certain brain wave frequencies.  This allows the brain to function with greater stability and control and enhances its function through its regulation of thoughts, feelings, and focus.
Neurofeedback has helped people with serious, and sometimes debilitating, neurological problems when no other therapies seem to work.

How does neurofeedback work?

Most neurofeedback systems apply electrodes to specific areas of the scalp and ears using a special conductive paste in order to monitor brainwave activity.  The sensors transmit brainwave signals to the computer software which records and measures the frequencies during the protocol. The sensors are not inputting anything, nor removing anything, from the brain. The client then sees the frequencies on the screen. Most systems do this through video games or morphology feedback.  During neurofeedback, the client either plays the game or manipulates the feedback to shape the brainwave activity to a more regulated and desirable state. As the desired brain wave is acheived, the brain learns to direct itself toward a more desirable performance level. Each individual is set up to target specific frequencies dependent on their wants and needs. Neurofeedback is completly holistic, non-invasive, and painless.

Neurofeedback addresses problems of brain disregulation. Typically, when the brain wave frequencies move into a desired frequency pattern, symptoms may be greatly decreased or completely eliminated.  Often, it is only a matter of getting the brain to function better, rather than curing a condition.  With neurofeedback, your client does not necessarily have to have a clear diagnosis.  Instead, neurofeedback focuses more on the specific symptoms of each individual and improving those symptoms.

Success
Neurofeedback is gaining popularity due to its high success rate. We have high expectations when it comes to administering neurofeedback.   Nearly everyone should see gains of some sort in their sessions (provided they are attended with some regularity.)  If this success level is not being met, there is usually a reason. With some tweaking of the sessions most clients will see gains that they, and those around them, notice.

Medications
After successfully completing their sessions and working with their prescribing doctor, many clients can either decrease their dosage or stop using their medication.  The brain starts to take over the role of regulating itself.  Instead of changing the chemistry of the brain like medications, neurofeedback helps change the brain to its more effective and efficient state.

Introduction to Neurofeedback

Our autism course is designed to address the applications of neurofeedback as a training tool for disregulated states for people on the spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has shown a dramatic increase in prevalence.  Autism is defined as a neurodevelopment disorder characterized by impairment in social interaction and communication. People who fall within the Autism Spectrum appear to be extremely over aroused.  This is often related to their sensory overload, hyper focus, and difficulty processing the subtleties of relationships. In the most severe cases they are forced to retreat into a trance-like world because their system is overloaded by sounds, movements, and even physical touch. These issues seem to respond best to neurotherapy that exercises slower frequencies. This can teach them to slow down their excessive processing speed so that they don’t feel so overwhelmed by the world. In contrast to behavior therapy, positive outcomes as a result of neurofeedback training are achieved over the course of several months rather than a year or more of intensive training.  The training outcomes of neurofeedback training are maintained over time and tend not to reverse after treatment is ended as in drug therapy, diet therapy, and supplementation with vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.

Our courses are designed to be hands-on, interactive, and educational.  Upon completion of this course you will:

  • Have the ability and knowledge to run your own neurofeedback sessions on your clients
  • Learn about and use protocols to decrease arousal
  • Help reduce client's time in therapy
  • Understand how and where to market neurofeedback in the autism community
  • Provide support for clients and their families
  • Empower ASD clients to more readily engage in their communities

Introduction to Neurofeedback and Treating Addiction

Our Addiction Course is designed to examine neurofeedback and its application in addiction treatment. Neurotherapy is a powerful adjunct to other effective structured programs for addictions, eating disorders, smoking cessation, abusive relationships, character disorders, and issues related to one’s discipline for or resistance to change. Many leading alcohol and substance abuse treatment centers now utilize neurofeedback services that can help underlying issues and do not just focus solely on addiction recovery. These underlying issues can often become obstacles to addiction recovery. Help in healing these underlying issues frees the newly abstinent to be more present for the drug rehab program and significantly increase their average length of stay. This also applies to other addiction recovery programs other than drug dependence such as eating disorder treatment, gambling addiction, computer addiction, sex addiction, shopping addiction, compulsive behaviors, pain medication addiction and alcoholism.

Our courses are designed to be hands-on, interactive, and educational.  Upon completion of this course you will:

  • Have the ability and knowledge to run your own neurofeedback sessions on your clients
  • Learn the protocols proven effective in the large UCLA Addiction Study
  • Help reduce client resistance to therapy
  • Understand how and where to market neurofeedback
  • Improve client retention (short and long term)
  • Improve abstinence rates
  • Improve aftercare compliance
  • Enable your clients to begin to live the life they want to lead

Post traumatic stress disorder is defined as an anxiety disorder that some people get after experiencing or witnessing an event “outside the range of usual human experience”.  People with post traumatic stress re-live the trauma in their mind, body and/or sometimes even visualize it happening over again.  A traumatized person may begin efforts to avoid thoughts, feelings or conversations about the event.  He or she will often engage in a very busy life, because it is during idle moments that intrusive thoughts and memories haunt them.  Triggers that originally frightened them may begin to generalize to other things and activities, which causes their world to shrink.  They usually become increasingly cautious and phobic.  Neurofeedback, specifically the alpha-theta protocol, is a training process that has been scientifically-proven to improve post traumatic stress disorder.  Alpha-theta brings on a deep calm witness state where people can often observe or think about their dislodged memories in a safe dream-like state.  With alpha-theta, clients train their brain to let go of negative response patterns that are based on old or false beliefs so they can enjoy life with a new and healthier perspective. In addition, the brain becomes receptive to complementary psychological therapies that might otherwise have created avoidant or defensive reactions.

Our courses are designed to be hands-on, interactive, and educational.  Upon completion of this course you will:

  • Have the ability and knowledge to run your own neurofeedback sessions on your clients
  • Learn about and use the alpha-theta protocol and its use in treatment of PTSD
  • Help reduce client resistance to therapy
  • Understand how and where to market neurofeedback
  • Be able to help your clients feel more connected, have more inner peace, and have less fear undertaking new endeavors
  • Accelerate client progress
  • Enable your clients to begin to live the life they want to lead
