INTRO I n the past our Milestones publication has served as a medium to reflect upon our events from our previous semester of events From September to December PBSN has provided its members with a plethora of events ranging from competitions workshops speaker panels and socials that have helped to shape our member base for the duration of their university careers We truly hope that you have gained great value as a PBSN member and continue to join us for our second semester your second year and beyond Last semester PBSN became a ratified club of the USC rebranded its mentorship program to the Members Network hosted a community Tree Planting Event with TD Tree Days and launched its very first post on the PBSN Blog With even more planned for the Winter semester we look forward to a strong finish for the 2015 2016 Academic Year PBSN would like to formally thank all of the VPs and Executives that came together to execute our events and write this report our gracious alumni that have provided continuous support over the years and our sponsors listed on page 30 for their generosity and investment in PBSN Sincerely Cassidy Ishmael President 12

SUMMER DINNERS 13 P BSN s Summer Dinners were held across several cities across Canada this summer as an opportunity for incoming first year students to meet current VPs and future classmates before their term at Western University began The aim was to help students transition into first year by facilitating an event where people could get to know one another and become friends We offered dinners in Toronto London Mississauga and Vancouver to engage incoming students with one another and offer an opportunity for them to have all their questions answered as well as receive advice from current Western students HBA students and PBSN alumni We really loved the connections that we saw being built at all our dinners and were happy to see some familiar faces at our events during first semester To all those that attended we really hope you had a great time and established connections as well as friendships that helped you transition into first year annual general meeting P BSN officially launched on September 24th with our first General Meeting Welcoming hundreds of attendees of both returning and new members we introduced each of our nine portfolios as well as outlined our major events for the entire year Sponsored by Sushi Galore this event was an opportunity for members to find out about executive opportunities meet with each other for the first time and get pumped up for the entire year The directors loved getting the chance right at the beginning of the school year to be able to talk to so many interested members face to face and enjoyed a strong start to our year 14

branching out 15 T his year PBSN rebranded our Mentorship Program to create the Member s Network Program Along with the rebranding we restructured the organization with a focus on tailored quality relationships rather than a large quantity of connections First year students were paired with a group of complementary P BSN hosted their first ever treeplanting event Branching Out with ReForest London and the City of London at Neptune Crescent PBSN was joined by other Western clubs local businesses TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and residents of London Students departed on a school bus equipped with sunscreen a full water bottle and a hat in the early afternoon for a full day ready to give back to the community The day began with speeches given by the London mayor and sponsors followed by a lesson on the importance of planting native trees and connecting woodlands and training on how to properly plant a tree PBSN members spent the rest of the afternoon working diligently to plant and mulch hundreds of trees Some members were interviewed and photographed by local media outlets to describe the initiative By the end of the day Neptune Crescent was filled with trees ready to grow for the years to come aiding ReForest London s goal in planting One Million Trees mentors consisting of second year students and headed by an Ivey HBA student Through the program PBSN built a support system for first years that helped them answer questions about academics future goals summer jobs transitions in university and transitions into Ivey The Members Network aims to nurture growth for the members network all participants first year students are able to leverage the upper year students experiences while upper year students are presented with an impactful leadership opportunity The Member s Network continues to help students gain deeper insights about vital life skills prospective career paths and professional development opportunities 16

the pro bono consulting program 17 P BSN s Pro Bono Consulting program is the go to educational and interactive experience for first and second year Western students interested in a future consulting career This year applications were open to every student regardless of experience or credentials The selected associates were analytical detail oriented as well as natural problem solvers and were given the unique opportunity to learn the fundamentals of consulting through workshops projects and inisghtful feedback from HBA2s experienced in the field This year s client is Universe a social marketplace for ticketing that has raised over 2 million in venture capital and has recently been acquired by TicketMaster NYSE LYV We are also very excited as on March 8th the CEO of Universe will be making his way down to London to listen to the pitches of our associates careers in business A t this year s Careers in Business Workshop PBSN gave students the opportunity to gain valuable insight and advice from second year students and Ivey HBAs who spoke about their experiences in a variety of industries Attendees learned about career paths in different field of business such as finance marketing technology nonprofit and consulting They were also able to ask questions about the specific culture at a diverse array of companies such as Unhaggle SmithStreet Solutions Boston Consulting Group The Walrus Unilever and Deloitte This workshop was a fantastic opportunity for participants to explore the various industries especially if they were uncertain about the specific sector they would like to pursue PBSN would like to thank Rohan Gawri Mikayla Johnson Zakariya Ahmed Rachael DiMenna and Karen Yu as well as our members for their participation 18

networking workshop 21 T he Networking Workshop led by the Careers Portfolio was a great start to the three part Career Series The evening began with a presentation on how to improve on general professional networking skills Students were taught step by step instructions on how to make their future networking experiences a success They practiced their networking skills throughout the event starting from how to prepare for it all the way to learning how to professionally followup With tips from good conversation topics to how to have a good handshake members were given knowldege only found outside of the classroom Afterwards members were welcome to practice their newly learned networking abilities with upperyear students including IveyHBAs andPBSN alumni The exceptionally good networkers were awarded a special pass for the next resume workshop A t the annual Resume Career Workshop the members were taught how to design and develop both a unique and professional resume The workshop began with a lecture style lesson led by PBSN s Career s Portfolio to outline the necessary elements of a resume The presentation also included a humerous example of what not to put on a resume that had inappropriate colours fonts as well as pictures giving everyone a good laugh After the lesson using the knowledge gained from the presentation brave students volunteered their resumes for constructive criticism by audience members In addition to the lesson PBSN invited Ivey HBAs and PBSN alumini to edit resumes one onone with members In the end every students learned effective tips in order to successfully stand out in their future application processes with their newly edited resumes 22

interview workshop L 23 eading up to the renowned annual Scotia Wealth Management s Interview Competition the Career Portfolio held the final part of the Career Series the Interview Workshop It was held to prepare participants for the upcoming competition or simply for interested members who aspired to improve their interview abilities The event began with a classroom style tutorial on how to alleviate the stress and be memorable in interview situations The tutorial began with the use of infamous movie clips of bad interviews of what not to do It followed with explanation of different interview styles the successful STARS approach and how to dress for the situation Students were encouraged to prepare extensively for the interview beforehand and promptly follow up with the interviewer afterwards The high pressures associated with interviewing were lessened after this event and members left more confident in their ability to succeed in the upcoming Interview Competition and in future interviews pbsn entrepreneurship panel A reaction to the growing interest in the start up sector PBSN hosted the PEP for the first time this year The PBSN Entrepreneurship Panel PEP was an event which had a panelist of entrepreneurship success stories where students asked the hard questions From how did you get to where you are to how do you manage school and your business our panelists provided us with the information only those immersed in the business can provide Our panel featured two successful student Entrepreneurs one start up incubator and one seasoned pro The night concluded with a signature PBSN networking session with representatives from Race Roster UnLondon other local start ups and the celebrity panelists themselves Needless to say after participating in the PBSN Entrepreneurship panel PBSN members got a head start in the start up world 24

case competition S 25 uits on and brazening the below zero degrees temperature over twenty teams competed in PBSN s Annual Case Competition The annual competition is designed to provide students with an opportunity to hone their critical thinking skills analytical skills group skills as well as presentation skills As well it allows for students to create quality solutions efficently and effectively Not only is the purpose of this event to help students develop said skills but also to provide students with an opportunity to meet like minded individuals and get a small taste of dealing with a real world business problem This year students worked tirelessly to come up with a solution to a case created by divv formerly CabShare Canada As well students only had a short amount of time before they were to present to HBA judges For the case Divv was looking to increase its market exposure by resonating with students and youth especially after a recent rebranding and relaunch of the company Three cash prizes were available for the top three teams including 300 200 and 100 for the first place team second place team and third place team respectively In addition the winning team was guaranteed a job interview for a summer internship with divv 26

gingerbread competition 27 A s snow began to fall and December arrived the PBSN executive team was feeling festive To spread the holiday spirit we hosted our highly anticipated Gingerbread House Competition Student created teams of four to seven people with the challenge of building the most creative Gingerbread House Within only 30 minutes the teams composed masterpieces with unique architecture a variety of colours and concepts that reflected PBSN s values Reaching a record number of teams the competition became fierce and the winning teams were decided based on their pitches of their Gingerbread house Thank you to all of our members who came dressed in their most festive holiday gear and a special thank you to all of our judges interview competition I nterview preparation is the key to success in landing the perfect job This year we built on the success of our inaugural Interview Competition last year offering two intern positions at Scotia Wealth Management formerly Scotia McLeod for the summer To begin individuals were tested in their group interview and resume writing skills After being narrowed down competitors then completed a one on one interview answering behavioural based questions using their provided fake profile Finally 10 competitors were subjected to a panel interview interviewing as themselves Whittled down from 50 to the top 2 congratulations to Victor Lal and Paul Okundaye the 2016 Interview Competition winners 28
