www.fivetownslink.com Dear Friends, It's been a crazy few months. Good months! When I started this business venture I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I could never imagine such a great outcome. And I want to thank all of you. All of you, who believed in me and this magazine from the get-go. Before I started this magazine, I was a Zumba Instructor and I was looking to advertise my classes to the Five Towns Community. As I was looking around at the various advertising options, I felt there wasn't anywhere for local businesses to effectively advertise. However awesome my Zumba classes were, Brooklynites and Queensites weren't going to come out here. Another issue was the return of investment. The point of advertising is to make more money, and all I could think of was "When will I ever make my money back?" So that's where it started. Fast forward a few months, and this magazine has grown beyond my wildest expectations! Thank you for your support. Five Towns customers are my top priority, so if you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me. www.fivetownslink.com Individuals in our Community Beryl Ostroff Beryl Ostroff, is a renowned photographer around the NYC area. Beryl and his wife are a team that are famous for their school photos. His work was recently published in the Ami magazine as part of a segment on the Daf Yomi. Beryl lives in Far Rockaway with his wife, Andrea, and their 3 children. Yitty Denciger: So you're a photographer. Beryl Ostroff: Yes, my wife is really the master. She has an eye for art. I was originally in the jewelry business but later came to this profession to help my wife. I always liked photography as a hobby and now I have the opportunity to do it as my career. YD: Where are you from? BO: I am Ba'al Teshuva. I grew up in California. I was a surfer boy, y'know. My mom married my dad, who was 35 years older than her. I don't know if she was looking for a father figure or whatever. Together, they had me and my sister. He passed away when I was 13, so we moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where my mom's from. I've had a lot of Hasghacha in my life. It's very hard not to see it. YD: How did you become exposed to Yiddishkeit? BO: It's an interesting story. One day my mother wanted to go out and see the Jewish part of town. It was very hot outside. I didn't really want to go because I had no interest. Anyway, instead of going the short route she took a longer one. On the way we saw two Rabbis standing outside and we started talking to them. They took us into their office and the rest is history. They sent me to a Chabad camp and made me a counselor. They got me a bed in the dorm in the Yeshiva (which is no longer existent). From there, I went to Yeshiva in Israel which is yet another interesting Hashgacha story. All my friends went to more modern Yeshivas, and I went to a Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. YD: Wow. That's so interesting! How did you ultimately meet your wife and move to Far Rockaway? BO: It's also an amazing story of how I met her. Back in the day, I was on a dating website called J-Date. The way the website worked was that the more you logged in to your account, the more visible your profile became to others. There was basically a list of people and your name would move up the list. I hadn't logged in, in months. Andrea was searching the site and for some reason she scrolled all the way down the list to #397, which was my profile. She emailed me and that's how we ended 8» up married! Her family is from Far Rockaway, so we settled here. YD: Wow. You have such an interesting life story. What is it like working with her? BO: You know, a lot of people ask me that. We work as a team. We make it work. She does the poses and I take the shots. I work with her and I love her. (chuckles.) YD: So you do school photo shoots in many schools? BO: Yes. What I was noticing with other photographers is that they had a 15-20% return rate, for retaking pictures, with their customers. Like for customers who didn't like the pictures, or they blinked in the picture and stuff like that. I figured out a system to get that down to 5%. When I do school photo shoots I have a whole warm-up routine that I do with the kids. Baruch Hashem, I've been successful. YD: Interesting. You mentioned earlier that you were in the jewelry business. Can you tell me a little bit about that? BO: A friend from the Yeshiva I went to in Israel got me into the Diamond business. He's actually one of the biggest guys in diamonds now and he happens to live in the Five Towns as well. Providence, where I was living at the time, was known for its corruption. I went through a lot of misfortune, robberies and that type of stuff. Later, I got into the Diamond District on 47th Street in the City. Still, my commission didn't make a great living. YD: So how did you get into Photography? BO: My wife was doing photography and I decided to join her and help her. Before I got married, I didn't have that many expenses so my job in diamonds was enough. But after I got married, I had more expenses so this led me to find another career. I love what I do. You really have to have to have the talent for it. These days, with digital cameras, a lot of moms think they are taking professional shots. But you really got to know what you're doing. You have to have the hands for it. FIVE TOWNS LINK • 516.331.1885

www.fivetownslink.com KEEP YOUR VEHICLE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE DRIVING CONDITION The lights, tires, brakes, windshield wipers, defroster, & radiator are especially important for winter driving. KEEP YOUR WINDOWS CLEAR Don’t start driving until the windows are defrosted & clean - even if you’re only going a short distance. DON’T USE YOUR CRUISE CONTROL IN WINTRY CONDITIONS Even roads that appear clear can have sudden slippery spots and the short touch of your brakes to deactivate the cruise control feature can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. DON’T GET OVERCONFIDENT IN YOUR 4X4 VEHICLE. Remember that your four-wheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster. Many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. PAY ATTENTION. Don’t try to out-drive the conditions. Remember the posted speed limits are for dry pavement. SLOW DOWN when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady spots. These are all candidates for developing black ice — a thin coating of clear ice that can form on the pavement surface that may be difficult to see. AVOID EXCESSIVE ACTIONS while steering, braking or accelerating to lessen the chances of losing control of the vehicle. SPACE OUT! Leave plenty of room between your vehicle and others. It takes more time and distance to stop your vehicle in adverse weather conditions, so use your brakes carefully. Brake early, brake slowly, and never slam on the brakes. Many needless rear-end crashes occur on icy streets because drivers forget to leave stopping space. CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE THROUGHOUT THE WINTER. In cold weather, tire pressure naturally drops. Tires that aren’t fully inflated can have a slower reaction time when you’re trying to steer, which could be dangerous when there’s ice on the road. Check your tire pressure every few weeks to make sure they’re fully inflated. 10 » FIVE TOWNS LINK • 516.331.1885

www.fivetownslink.com MY PERSONAL CHANUKAH MIRACLE David Elazar Simai, M.D. In honor of Chanukah, I wanted to share with you an event that took place exactly one year ago. A story that illustrates the Divine Intervention that accompanies us in every generations.   For years, I tried to avoid “going under the knife.”  I have been suffering on occasion from pains relating to a hernia that had developed over the years, but being in “solo practice”, as many of you know, does not allow many sick days, and that was the main reason that I avoided the surgery.  last year however, my abdominal pains lasted longer and became more painful, so I decided to see a surgeon and scheduled the surgery for Thanksgiving weekend. I picked Thanksgiving because my colleague once mentioned that it would be the perfect time to take a few sick days.  Families are away and the office is generally quiet on this weekend. Last year however, the First night of Hanukkah fell on Wednesday night, the eve of Thanksgiving.  I realized that I will be away for at least 3-4 days and arranged for office coverage during our shortened office hours.  My assistant Batsheva Kramer pitched in and graciously filled those hours.  But only one issue remained: on night following my surgery, Batsheva was to travel upstate and would not have good cell phone reception to be able to answer pages.  I imagined that on that night, I would be in some considerable pain and would take some painkillers which would make me drowsy (from what I remembered from my previous 12 » operation  - wisdom teeth extraction 10 years ago….).  I was not sure if I could effectively answer messages in that state, but I felt that I had no choice, Batsheva might not get messages in a timely fashion and even though I generally do not get many pages overnight - “you never know” - I decided to stay on call. My surgery went well - thank G-d.  But as soon as the anesthesia wore off, I realized that the recovery will not be so easy.  I had 2 hernias and the surgeon recommended an “open” approach, using the traditional (larger) incisions.  A few days before, my nice neighbour offered me his “post operative rope” - he said that despite having a minimally invasive - laparoscopic surgery with small incisions, he had to use a rope to get around the house for a week.  I quickly realized what he was talking about.  The pain was unbearable, especially when getting up from a sitting or laying position. Initially,I felt faint each time I attempted to stand up.  The painkillers only slightly diminished that pain. But despite all that, I was so happy to make it safely out of the Operating Room.  A week before going under the knife, I viewed hernia surgeries online and was thankful that at least FIVE TOWNS LINK • 516.331.1885 continued on page 14

www.fivetownslink.com to my knowledge the surgery was “successful”. So many things could go wrong during an operation, starting with the anesthesia and ending with any small diversion of the scalpel that could lead to chronic pain and suffering.  Lighting the candles that night, although with tremendous pain, my heart was full of thanks that I was home, surrounded by my family. We lit the candles and even though I was not able to dance or sing, the kids put together a concerted effort to make the atmosphere joyous. continued from page 12 The pain quickly forced me back to my room, where I was hoping to get some rest for the rest of the night, but I was barely able to lay down.  concerned mother of a newborn that was literally the last patient I examined before my operation.  She was concerned because “her 5 day old baby was not keeping anything down.” I quickly called her back, and asked her to explain the situation.  She replied “Dr. Simai, since I saw you with the baby yesterday, he has not stopped vomiting.”  I felt so horrible to hear this, initially it sounded like the baby may have caught a certain virus in my office - how terrible would that be!!!   on further questioning, I learned that the vomiting was after every single feeding, it turned yellow/ green in the past few hours. The baby was very cranky and uninterested in nursing. There was no fever. He stopped making bowel movements and his urine output seemed to be diminished as well (his diapers were not as heavy as before).   I usually tend not to be overly cautious, but putting together all this information made me suspicious that the baby has a serious intestinal blockage or as we call “intestinal obstruction.” The signs of intestinal obstruction are pain, persistent vomiting and lack of bowel movements (the obstruction does not allow any food to pass through - hence no bowel movements are formed).  I explained to the mom that we are dealing with a situation that may require immediate surgical intervention, and asked her to take the baby to Cohen’s Childrens Medical Center Emergency Room.  I proceeded to phone the E.R. to discuss the case, and asked the attending on call to expedite the baby’s visit due to the nature of the emergency. I was concerned that if we wait too long to diagnose the issue, a portion of the intestines could lose the blood supply and “necrotize” - die. If this was to The pain quickly forced me back to my room, happen the surgery would have to include cutting where I was hoping to get some rest for the rest the dead intestines out. In an infant so young, this of the night, but I was barely able to lay down.  could lead to a protracted stay in the Intensive No matter at what position I was, the pain would Care Unit and multiple corrective surgeries.  My creep up and overwhelm me. The painkillers were friend assured me that he will take care of the clearly not enough, but there was nothing much baby call me with a report, and I thanked. to do. I was also starting to feel feverish and on As soon as I put the phone down, the baby’s top of everything else, my wound seemed to be parents called me again, asking again for the increasingly more swollen and tender.  I noticed name and address of the hospital.  I sensed that some minor bleeding through the dressing on the parents were in a state of panic.  I tried to of of the wounds.  The images of my father’s re-assure them that we are taking steps that will nightmares with post surgical bleeding had me ensure that the baby gets the care that he needs concerned, but other than pain medicines and on time. I think we spoke once more as they were huge bags of ice, there was really nothing else for approaching the hospital, just to make sure that me to do. they find the E.R. entrance. www.fivetownslink.com I retired back to my bed to try and get some rest.  A few hours later, I called the E.R. for an update and was told that the baby looks o.k. but will get the tests done “just to make sure”.  I asked again to try and expedite the tests as much as possible.  I spoke to the parents and they seemed more comfortable, the baby however seemed to still be in pain. continued from page 12 At approximately midnight, I received a call from the E.R. - the surgical team reviewed the xrays and decided that the baby indeed had intestinal obstruction and will have emergency surgery, Dr. Jose Prince, the Pediatric Surgeon was on his way to the hospital. The mom later recalled to me that Dr. Prince literally ran into the E.R. and grabbed the baby to save time.  He found the obstruction - the baby had malrotation of the intestines.  This is a condition that affects 1 out of 500 babies.  The intestines twist on themselves and cut off blood flow to the area, causing sharp pains and intestinal obstruction.  Very often, the condition is diagnosed after some bowels are damaged and require resection but the baby’s intestines appeared not to have been damaged yet, so no resection was necessary. I woke up again at 5 am from my pains and reached over to my phone.  Dr. Prince texted me a message at 2 am, reporting that the surgery went well and the timing could not have been better.I thanked him for his devotion and expert care, I know that in some hospitals surgeons are reluctant from leaving their houses to operate in such hours.  His timely intervention was crucial for securing a favorable outcome in our case. I spoke to the baby’s parents who tearfully thanked me and recalled what they viewed as a miracle happening in front of their eyes.  It was shocking to everyone how quickly a baby went from nursing and pooping normally and peacefully to being ushered in for emergency surgery!!!  My head was already spinning from all the pain, so I literally had to pinch myself to make sure I was not in some dramatic fantasy…... On Shabbos Hanukkah, 3 days after my surgery, I woke up in the morning and decided to try and venture out to shul.  I took one more pill for my pains and slowly limped to the nearest shul Young Israel of Woodmere.  There, my next door neighbour Aaron Einstein welcomed me to sit 20 » next to him. I was in so much pain that I could barely stretch to put on my Tallis, but I was so delighted to finally be out of my house and join the community. On that Shabbos day, the words of prayer we add on Hanukkah - “For the miracles, the deliverance, the mighty feats, the acts of rescue, the wonders, and the comforting deeds that You have performed for our forefathers in those days in this time” - brought me to tears.  Here thousand of years after the big miracle of Hanukkah, I was in the midst of another miracle, “in this time”. And so, on Monday of that week, I was able to restart working at my office.  And a few days later, on the last day of Hanukkah, to our delight the little baby came back home to his family.  His bris Here thousand of years after the big miracle of Hanukkah, I was in the midst of another miracle, “in this time” was naturally delayed for a few weeks due to his surgery, but little David has come a long way since and today he is as vigorous and strong as any 1 year old toddler i know. I hope he and his family will enjoy this coming Hanukkah and many more singing and rejoicing in their own warm home.  And for my prospective, David’s story will keep my heart glowing with the special light of hope and security that someone is watching over us with the same love that we felt thousands of years ago in the land of Israel. www.fivetownslink.com WEIRD NEWS STORIES of 2014 DOG COUGHS UP MISSING WEDDING RING LOST 6 YEARS AGO Lois Matykowski of Wisconsin lost her diamond wedding ring six years ago. She searched everywhere, as the ring was fairly new and not insured, but never found it. This past June, her ten-yearold dog Tucker swallowed a popsicle stick. Tucker is famous for stealing food and eating anything that isn’t nailed down. A veterinarian advised her to feed the dog a Vaseline sandwich, which she did, and he threw up the popsicle stick. Two days later, the dog threw up again, and this time, Matykowski’s wedding ring came up! It had apparently been inside the dog all those years. DRUNK DRIVER BUSTED BY PARROT Guillermo Reyes was driving home one night, in Mexico City, when he encountered a DUI traffic stop. When police talked to him, they heard a voice from inside the car saying, "He's drunk! He's drunk!" They shone a light into the car, but there were no other passengers, just Reyes' parrot. Apparently he'd heard people say that phrase enough to learn it. The cops gave Reyes a Breathalyzer test, and concluded that he was, indeed, driving while impaired.
