Underwriting Enhancements that Deliver Underwriting Enhancements for Preferred Criteria and APS Guidelines In addition to the underwriting enhancements that we recently announced, we are pleased to let you know about new underwriting changes to our Preferred Criteria, which will be available on August 16, 2016. We believe these changes are another exciting step forward in evolving across all aspects of our business to help protect our customers and help you grow your business. Please note, that these changes will apply to applications received on or after August 16, 2016. A NACIS software update will be available on or about August 16, 2016. Changes to Underwriting Criteria for Super Preferred, Preferred Non-Tobacco, and Preferred Tobacco (Effective August 16, 2016) Old New Separate preferred and build guidelines were used for Term/Custom Guarantee® Universal life and Universal life. All products will now use one set of guidelines for ages 70 and under and one set for ages 71+. Up to 12 cigars a year were allowed for the preferred classification for all ages. Up to 24 cigars a year will now be allowed for the preferred classification for all ages. The history of alcohol or drug abuse treatment criteria was 10 years for the preferred classification for all ages. The history of alcohol or drug abuse treatment criteria is now 7 years for the preferred classification for all ages. Multiple age categories were used for the blood pressure criteria, and treatment for blood pressure was not allowed for the super preferred classification. Blood pressure criteria will use a simpler approach, and treatment is now allowed for the super preferred category. Cholesterol was allowed up to 220 and 240 for all ages. For those 70 and under and for the term and Custom Guarantee UL products, the cholesterol/HDL ratio was set at 4.5 for super preferred and 5.5 for preferred categories. Cholesterol will now be allowed up to 300 for all ages. For those 70 and under, the cholesterol/HDL ratio has been raised to 5.0 on super preferred and 6.0 on preferred for all products. “Diagnosis” was included on the family history criteria for coronary artery disease and cancer on the super preferred classification. “Diagnosis” is no longer included on the family history criteria for coronary artery disease and cancer on the super preferred classification. No past cancers were eligible for the preferred classification. Some past cancers will now be eligible for the preferred classification. FOR AGENT USE ONLY. The preferred build chart for the Term and Custom Guarantee UL product was previously three pounds less for ages 70 and under. The substandard build chart was more conservative. The preferred build chart for all products was increased by three pounds for ages 70 and under. The substandard build chart now allows for improved ratings. The kidney function parameter for ages 71+ for super preferred was more conservative. The kidney function parameter for ages 71+ has been loosened to allow more applicants to qualify. One driving violation on a motor vehicle report was allowed for super preferred. Two driving violations on a motor vehicle report will now be allowed for the super preferred classification. Tobacco rate definitions were three years for super preferred and two years for preferred for Universal life products. Tobacco definitions were five years for super preferred and three years for preferred for Term and Custom Guarantee UL. Tobacco rate definitions will now be five years for super preferred and three years for preferred for all products. Term and Custom Guarantee UL products will remain the same. APS (Attending Physician Statements) guidelines for age and amount required medical records more frequently. APS guidelines for age and amount are now more lenient and require medical records less frequently. View the Updated Underwriting Requirements While the changes above are effective as of August 16, 2016, as a reminder, the following underwriting enhancements are already effective: We will no longer offer table 1 ratings. Going forward, risks assessed at table 1 will be offered a standard rating. Recreational Marijuana Use: Users qualify for non-tobacco rates starting at age 21. Those under age 21 will be charged tobacco rates. Depending on the frequency of use, a rating may be required. Preferred and super preferred are not available. Treadmill EKG’s and MD exams are no longer required at any age or face amount. Applicants that have medical conditions that are not severe enough to cause them to be table rated may now be considered for a preferred underwriting class if they meet the preferred criteria. Examples of these medical conditions include things such as non-ratable asthma and sleep apnea. Medical and financial evidence can be accepted for up to 12 months for risks through table 8 and through age 70. Medical and financial evidence can be accepted for up to six months over age 70 provided an APS is obtained. When determining total line for requirements, we will only include “applied for” and “in force” coverage within the past two years. Pregnancy & postpartum cholesterol: During the second and third trimester and up to two months postpartum, cholesterol may be up to 350 and still receive a preferred rating, as long as the ratio meets the written criteria.
