This booklet is one of the final outcomes of LLP - Comenius Bilateral School Partnership project titled as "Eco-friendly Planet... This is our Home, Keep it Clean!” There are two schools from Bulgaria and Romania involved in two year project (2012-2014). This project has focused on developing a greater understanding of eco-friendly environment. Choosing an eco friendly lifestyle is the first step towards saving our planet and protecting human lives in this planet.

Page 3 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! First Clean-up Campaign in Bulgaria The first clean-up campaign in Radomir, Bulgaria was held in April 2013. The students, participants in the project together with their teachers created a big event inviting representatives from the municipality, parents, friends and other guests to share with them the opening of the clean-up campaign. The headmistress of the school, Mrs. V. Stoilova, introduced the main objectives and goals of the project as well as the program for the coming months. Guests of the event were the four elements - Mrs. Earth, Mr. Fire, Mr. Air and Mrs. Water who debated about the importance of keeping our planet Earth clean and safe. Mrs. Earth opened the debate with the proverb “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children”. They discussed the greenness of the forests, the freshness of the air and the clean water exposed to the continuous harmful and dangerous activity of man damaging and devastating this extraordinary, marvelous planet and its environment where we live. In fact, we, the people, ruin and pollute our own home – our planet Earth. Due to the immense human and industrial activity tons of rubbish are wasted into the nature and we together with coming the generations face a serous ecological catastrophe because we have caused severe damages to the planet. Now is the time to act and do something all these devastating for the environment processes to stop. We must act quickly and with caution and change the way we live. We must save the planet for the future generations.

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 4 First Clean-up Campaign in Bulgaria After the official part of the campaign was closed, the students and teachers proceeded to the next step and started cleaning the territory around the school. Armed with brooms, shovels, spades and garbage bags our students worked with enthusiasm and strive. The territory for cleaning was divided into sectors and working groups of students worked hard and changed the outlook of the space making it cleaner and looking nicer. The final part was planting flowers in front of the school. The benefits of such initiatives are numerous. The students not only get aware of the ecological issues and problems. They broaden their horizons and educate to be responsible young people living and studying with the notion that they should keep the environment clean. This is not only true for the students. This is true for the teachers as well as the parents, friends and the community in general. Working together teaches them how to cooperate and work in teams, to divide the work into fair parts, to be creative, initiative and productive. Let’s not forget the fun the students had and the numerous jokes and the good mood which made the campaign an unforgettable event. This was a day to remember...

Page 5 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! Second Clean-up Campaign in Bulgaria On 8th October 2013 students and teachers from Nikola Vaptsarov Vocational School, Radomir participated in the second clean-up campaign part of the activities of the bilateral Comenius project “Eco-friendly Planet… This is our home, Keep it Clean!”. The students and their teachers cleaned the territory around the school. Before the start of the campaign the territory was divided into sectors. The students worked in groups. Each group had its own task to do. Some had to gather the littered rubbish. Others threw it into the rubbish bins. Third used shovels and removed the dry grass around the pavement. The weather was warm, sunny and suitable for work and fun. They spent the afternoon after the classes working, smiling and laughing. The successful first clean-up campaign was continued during the second one too. Our students worked with incredible enthusiasm. Everybody wanted to give their share into the preservation of the environment and particularly the area they live. Many of our students say that since the beginning of this project they have changed their way of thinking about nature, the conservation and preservation of the environment and now they try to live a more ecological way of life. And it is true not only for them. They teach their younger brothers and sisters to throw the rubbish into the rubbish bins. .

Page 6 Second Clean-up Campaign in Bulgaria They tell them about the endangered species in Bulgaria, Romania and all over the world and that we should do our best the save these animals from extinction. Our planet’s future is in our own hands. Let’s not forget the teachers who joined the initiative with no less enthusiasm. They worked shoulder to shoulder with their students, laughed and had fun with them. For the second clean – up campaign our students prepared a special poster which is now placed on a visible place at school. The first thing every visitor notices when enters the school gate is the poster. It symbolizes our students’ thinking for a harmonious life with the nature. The project poster demonstrates our support for a cleaner and safer environment. The students who participate in the project live and study with raised awareness and greater responsibility towards the preservation of the environment. Now they know more about how to cause less damage to the nature and share their knowledge with friends and relatives.

Page 7 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! First Clean-up Campaign in Romania All children should have a safe place to play, learn, explore and grow. We hope to transform our schoolyard into well-designed, usable open spaces where the school community can play, exercise, grow food, learn and connect with nature. That is why on April 18th we have started our schoolyard transformation. The idea of this campaign is not only to clean up after those irresponsible individuals who litter and pollute the parks, forests and roads, but to educate and pass a message to friends, families and colleagues on how important it is to keep our town clean. So, our schoolyard was cleaned up by students and teachers from Colegiul Auto, Traian Vuia, Tîrgu Jiu. Now we have a beautiful small garden in our schoolyard and only a few months after the campaign we can admire the results of our work. Inspired by this result we have decided that in October we will also plant some trees.

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 8 First Clean-up Campaign in Romania We all met in the schoolyard and we were given gloves and plastic bags. Then we have split into teams and each team has received a certain aria to clean. And we have started to pick up plastic cups, paper peaces and other trash that probably some of our colleagues have thrown on the grass instead of placing it into the correct bin. We collected over 10 plastic bags of garbage. Once the place was cleaned up we have decided to go further with our campaign and we have planted a few flowers.

Page 9 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! Second Clean-up Campaign in Romania As promised a few months ago, we have prepared ourselves for a new clean up campaign. We have decided to make things different this time, so we have focused on trees: prepared the old ones for winter and planted new ones. By planting trees in the urban environment we can help restore the natural cycle of plant growth, reproduction and decomposition. Moreover, trees contribute to community pride, instill feelings of relaxation and tranquility and adnatural character and beauty through a variety of forms, colors and textures.

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Second Clean-up Campaign in Romania We have found out that the best time to plant a tree in our area is the end of October and beginning of November. This will allow the roots of our new tree to become established before the hot dry summer arrives. That is why we have chosen this day to have this campaign, which is part of the Bilateral project activities. Each member of the team, teacher or student had a specific task. Some of us were responsible of gathering fallen leafs, some to cut off dead branches and others of digging holes for new trees. We had fun doing this and we are aware that with just a little effort we have made our schoolyard look so much better and plus we have contributed in make the air around us cleaner and healthier! We will let you know in spring the effects of our actions! Page 10

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 12 Workshop in Bulgaria Christmas time is coming again. You can feel in the hearts and see in the eyes of the students and teachers from Nikola Vaptsarov Vocational School, Radomir, Bulgaria the sparkling spirit of the coming holidays. The working process is in full swing, but something memorable, fun and creative is added to the cheer and joyful spirit at school – this is the workshop organized and executed under the patronage of the bilateral project Eco – friendly Planet... This is our Home, Keep it Clean! Students from the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade work together, have fun together and most of all learn from each other in the process of creating decorations, ornaments and different things from old newspapers and magazines, old materials in order to prove once again that reusing materials even for decoration can help lessen the tons of waste thrown every year. Each of these young enthusiasts has chosen to spend their afternoons for the next couple of weeks here at school, working and breathing life of their imagination into different objects and items. As you can see from old styrofoam, cardboard and quite a lot of imagination a beautiful eco tree comes to life. There at the near end appears to be a small hill which rises to add charm to the landscape. Did you see the eco house? Old, unnecessary cartoon boxes were saved from being thrown into the rubbish and now they live again in the form of a house. Our students call it with a great sense of humour the “Muffin Factory”. Others laughingly say it looks like a prison for naughty students. Whatever you call it, the students proved again that we can lessen the world pollution by reusing old materials. It’s time to focus our eyes on the marvelous Christmas decorations, cards, fortune slips and decorative gifts made from waste styrofoam. The great contribution here lies in the hands of the girls from the 11th grade. Being fine young ladies, they added style and beauty creating flowers from old magazines and making cards from old paper. The fortune slips were added to surprise the guests of the coming Christmas charity bazaar with positive wishes for the coming holidays. Let’s not forget the teachers, though. The coordinator of the project, Miss Mariana Kolarska managed to involve and inject with enthusiasm the teachers too, who willingly and readily joined the workshop. A Math and PE teacher join forces combining logic and physical force to create a Christmas tree. The tree is given style with the British sense of things which is specialty of the English teacher. It is an interdisciplinary connection of the subjects to see the final products smoothly ordered and ready to be exposed to the public.

With this workshop we’ve proved we have the skills of the 21st century knowing how to cooperate, communicate, be creative and possess critical thinking. Our students understand in a deeper way the fact that we must be cautious and careful about nature. They know now that all you need is a bit of enthusiasm and imagination to recreate useless at first sight things into works of art. Learning and fun, all in one!

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 14 Workshop in Romania Be 'ECO' and modern at the same time! That was our motto. Did you knew that you can recycle household stuff while creating your own jewelry in a unique and modern style? Just look into the toolbox or kitchen drawer for safety pins, washers, copper wire and even small coins to turn them into jewelry ingenious. We are going to do our part to help the environment by giving some materials another use before they ultimately end up being recycled! We are going to each create our own product using recycled materials. So, using empty plastic bottles and pieces of leftover fabric we have created a few bracelets and other jewelry. As a project activity, we took old magazines and newspapers to make decorative objects. We have had a lot of fun creating a project using materials that would otherwise be recycled or thrown out. We hope we have inspired you to try to do at least one at home! And remember that any leftover fabric or plastic bottle you have may be transformed into a nice bracelet!

Page 17 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! Christmas Bazaar in Bulgaria Christmas….lights, candles, carols, songs… the world is changed as if enchanted and grasped in the hug of a fairy tale. The last few days before the Christmas holidays…Wherever you turn your face you see radiant faces, peacefulness and joy. Christmas is the time of the year when people turn their faces to charity, the time to give without expecting to receive, the time to be good and do good. No more different is the atmosphere at Nikola Vaptsarov Vocational School. What e better way to start the holidays organizing a Christmas charity bazaar at school. That is what the team of Eco – Friendly Planet…This is Our Home, Keep it Clean! did. The special date is18th December 2013, the place is Nikola Vaptsarov Vocational School. The English study has changed its purpose for a single afternoon giving space for a noble purpose. Desks transformed into stalls stand neatly ordered along the walls, covered with the items and products prepared by our students during the workshop, ready for their new owners. All is quiet. Some students and teachers stand expectantly in the room. Where are our dear guests? The door opens…wow!!!.. a swarm of young pupils and their teachers, older students, more teachers, all of a sudden the study is filled with clamour and noise. There are moving figures from stall to stall. You can see items, gifts, decorations, Christmas gifts in every hand. Everything is sold. The eco project team is happy, happy, happy! There is nothing more satisfying than to see that someone has appreciated your efforts and work. But what comes next? The money gathered during the bazaar are spent for the old people living in the Home for Old People in Radomir. Our students have prepared surprises: fruits, music and dances. The old people are stunned. In the Eve of Christmas they feel they are not forgotten. The young people from Nikola Vaptsarov Vocational School show their respect to the older generation, their understanding and support. We are extremely happy to see pleasure, smiles and even tears of joy in the eyes of so many old people. We would like to express our gratitude to the young pupils and their teachers from Hristo Smirnenski Middle School, Radomir for visiting our Christmas bazaar; the Mayor, Mr Plamen Aleksiev and his administration for their support during the bazaar and not on the last place the director of the Home for Old People in Radomir, Mrs Vaklinova and her staff for their warm welcome and hospitality.

Page 19 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! Christmas Bazaar in Romania We all love winter, especially because it is the holiday season. We enjoy decorating and spending time with family and friends, while spreading the holiday cheer. But we must also think about our environment, so as long as we are not cutting down a tree and we are using the one (a plastic tree) from last year it is OK. Before you go out and buy something new that will get thrown away before the New Year, consider giving another chance to the tree that you have used last year and make sure it has been carefully passed on for the next years. Decorating the Christmas tree it is fun! That is why we have all gathered in a classroom and we have started crafting some ornaments out of recycled paper. Using paper decorations for the holidays is cheap, easy and creatively freeing — we can choose whatever colors we want, make them whatever size we want, and make as many or as few as we want. All of these ideas make great Christmas tree ornaments, or string a few together to make a garland, or make a whole collection to hang in a window. For now we have made enough to decorate the Christmas tree we have at school.

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 22 Essay Contest in Bulgaria What will the Earth look like in the future ? Every person sees the future in a different way. Some believe that we will live together in alliance or live together with robots. But my point of view is a little bit different. I think that in the future the humans will have evolved more and we will be smarter, faster, and stronger and maybe something strange will have happened to our bodies. We will have tree arms, but we will still be the same in appearance. For me, the future will be a nicer place to live and there won’t be rich or poor, the people will be all equal. In the future there won’t be any wars or maybe diseases, the humans will live their lives in peace. But what will happen with the earth? Some scientists say that the earth will die eventually in the future, maybe because of the sun or maybe the humans will destroy their own home, but even today in the present, we are trying to prevent that, we are even thinking of living on another planet. We all have our predictions about what will happen in the future and almost every prediction is scary, but we mustn’t be afraid because the future is in our hands, the future will be what we do it. As I say, there are many predictions about the future and some of them could be true, but we cannot know for sure. The universe is a very strange place and life is unpredictable. So we can only try to make the world a better place for the generations after us. Stefan Petrov 11a

Page 23 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! Essay Contest in Bulgaria I imagine the Earth in the future a modern place with flying cars and robot-maids. Every family will live in a huge house. I think that every person will be able to fly in the space. There will have been invented medicines for diseases that are now incurable. I wish there to be a button that by clicking your wishes come true. For example, with one click of the button to go wherever you want, to turn into whatever or whoever you want. Robert Frost says in his poem: “Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.” Will our planet ultimately end up like the super- heated surface of Venus, or like the frozen wastelands of Mars, or will it continue to move up and down within a range of temperatures that are hospitable to life as we know it? I agree with Robert Frost. If God has said that the world will end in fire, it will end in fire. If he has said in ice, the world will end in ice. And yet I hope the world won’t end soon and it will continue its development for many years to come. Whatever happens, I’m sure that the Earth in the future will be an interesting place to live on. High technologies, talking and thinking machines, space trips and wonder buttons, all this could be a tiny part of what really expects us in the future. We only have to wait and see... Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 24 Essay Contest in Bulgaria

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 28 Essay Contest in Romania Today is April 22, a day like any other in the calendar. For our future as humans should be a very important day because it is Earth day. How many of us have remembered this? Only a few! Planet Earth is sad, and tells the other Planets: - I am sad because my people have not remembered that today is my birthday. I looked around and noticed that they are not performing actions for my protection nor for saving me! - But look… don’t be upset. Not everyone has forgotten that today is Earth Day! If you look carefully, you'll see groups of people performing various environmental activities for you to stay a planet always alive, said another Planet! - I am happy! My residents have not forgotten this important day for me and especially for them! While the planets were talking, on Earth were held different actions, like: reduce, reuse, recycle three methods which can eliminate waste and protect the environment. Present paper is a very easy to find, but in the past, it was rare and highly prized. Unlike other recyclable paper cannot be recycled indefinitely. Newspapers, magazines, boxes, books and other products we use every day can be recycled to obtain new products. We as people, we have at least three reasons why we should recycle paper: save energy, protect forests, pollute the environment less. Recycled Plastic is a material that is found everywhere. Recyclable plastic waste, cans, plates, glasses, bags, cases. Recycling plastic products help to conserve natural resources of oil. The plastic should be recycled to reduce the amount of solid waste, energy consumption, saving natural resources, reducing harmful chemicals in the air. We as residents of Planet Earth must not forget that plastic products that are discarded and end up in landfills do not break down again. Through our actions we need to reduce the number of landfills and we have more green spaces and a cleaner world. Glass can be recycled indefinitely without losing the clarity and purity. Glass packaging can be recycled without the new glass packaging obtained to lose its quality. Before recycling bottles or jars we must rinse them, remove labels from bottles and the jars, and then gather them in containers specially designed for glass. We try to recycle glass to save energy and reduce emissions of harmful gases in the atmosphere, recycling saves raw materials. Glass needs a million years to decompose; we all agree that is a very interesting thing. By recycling mobile phones we help poorer people have access to a phone. We all know that any mobile phone or accessory can be recycled 100%. Recycling mobile phones all participate actively for the poor to have access to a telephone. Repaired old phones are resold at low prices and so more people can afford to buy them. By recycling mobile phones we aim to reduce pollution. The phone battery thrown in a pool can pollute all the water in the pool, so it is very dangerous for the environment and our health.

Page 29 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! Essay Contest in Romania And the lights are green! To reduce power consumption, we can replace regular light bulbs with green ones. We all know the advantages of energy saving bulbs: have a life of seven times longer, does not explode, and is not as hot as conventional bulbs. The most effective method for saving energy is to use a greater extent of natural light. Not to forget, with each tree planted, the environment gets cleaner! Trees are the main source of oxygen in our planet! What we mean by thinking green? Protecting nature! To think so is to love nature and want to do something important to help. If you see a bottle or trash thrown lean and lift it or you see someone throwing trash in a green space, his attention. We can become more involved in campaigns organized by others or us. You need to think about the consequences that will be in future, know to respect everything around us. You can do so many things... For some time people began to be more concerned about all these things. We see everything that is happening around us and we can tell that something is wrong. However, only very few people realize and even trying to do something. Let's fight, let's do something to save us, thinking about our future and of our fellows. Things seem minor, but the major effects not only now, but also over time. Life is a gift very nice, actually the most beautiful, let's leave our children to enjoy this gift, and they learn what it means and how precious life is. For the Earth to remain a living planet, human interests has adapted to the laws of nature. Let's do something to save us before it's too late! Pop Alina

Page 33 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! First Project Meeting in Romania The Romanian Comenius team organized the First Comenius Meeting of the “Ecofriendly Planet…This is our Home, Keep it Clean!” project which involves two participating countries. This meeting was the first “face to face” meeting and also the opportunity to meet with our partners, all together. The organizers were pleased to meet the representatives of the Bulgarian school, 20 students and 6 teachers. The meeting started with a guided tour of the city. Romanian students explained the significance of different symbols from their town, such as the Ecaterina Teodoroiu Mausoleum, Brâncusi’s work, Ferdinand Bridge etc. After meeting each other all of them, teachers and students together, actively cooperated when negotiating the project activities and further details. The second day of the meeting started early in the morning in the school’s auditorium with a worm welcome, followed by a tour of the school. Romanian classes were next in program. Bulgarian students and teachers were very eager to learn new words and phrases. By the end of the class they have managed to learn a strophe from a wellknown poem, “Somnoroase păsărele”, written by Mihai Eminescu. The next activity programmed for that day was to transform old windows frames into new picture frames. All students worked in groups and decided what tasks were willing to do. The third day included other Romanian classes, followed by an activity based on customizing T-shirts by ourselves with eco slogans. The result was more that what we were expecting. All T-shirts were beautiful and the slogans very instructive! In the same day there was a traditional folk performance in a nearby school. Students danced a few Romanian dances and they have tried to teach them to the Bulgarian students. In the same village we have visited the Peasant Museum. After lunch, it was time to learn more about Romanian art and culture, so we have visited the Art Museum. During weekend the planned activities were more relaxed. On Saturday, in Retezat National Park, a series of activities were scheduled while hiking on the educational route-theme “Tales of the forest” . We have received information about using the compass and the mountain equipment. Students participated in a contest about tourist orientation, where they managed to put into practice the new knowledge. This guided hiking trip that was educational in nature was also used to point out some of the plants we have passed by. We, not only identified common plants, but also discovered interesting facts about each. Our guide was great at pointing out things that you would otherwise have walked past and totally missed. He was well prepared with tools and knowledge to make for us a very enjoyable experience.

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 34 First Project Meeting in Romania The day ended with a Cleaning up activity “We care about our mountains and rivers”. On Sunday, we were learning to distinguish between true and false Romanian legends. One was obvious about Dracula. Bulgarian partners learned the true story while visiting the Bran Castle. During the same day, we have also visited Curtea de Argeș Monastery and learned about Manole’s legend. Monday, started early in the morning, with Romanian classes and continued with a visit that combined history and ecology. We went to Peştera Bolii, the only cave in the country that is crossed along its entire length (455 m) by a river. Another thing different is the absence of cave stalactites and stalagmites. These specific configurations for caves are not formed here due to the fact that the cavern is crossed by a continuous air flow which makes it possible for their formation. Next stop was at Corvins’ Casle, in Hunedoara. It was built in 1446 mainly in Gothic style, but has Renaissance architectural elements. As one of the most important properties of John Hunyadi, the castle was transformed during his reign. It became a sumptuous home, not only a strategically enforced point. We were impressed by the way the castle was restored, although the scary background music from the prison and torture chamber, put us into the specific atmosphere. Another great thing was that there were people wearing medieval costumes, so we could see knightly duels and competitions and some brave students have even tried the bow hunting. All that were meant to give the castle the old glory back. The meeting continued with more lessons and other activities meant to increase the eco-spirit of students and teachers involved in this project and to make them responsible European citizens. On Wednesday, after the activities held inside the school we went to Tismana. The first place we went to, was Hidroelectrica; here after having walked about 1km inside a subterranean tunnel, we have learnt how green electricity is being produced. We have continued our trip to Tismana Monastery and a trout Farm. On Thursday after the daily activities, we have met at a festive dinner, where certificates of attendance were awarded to each participant at the reunion. Social events were organized in the evenings, they included watching a 3D movie at the local cinema, going to a swimming pool, playing bowling or football or just hang out and enjoy a walk in the city center.

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 36 Second Project Meeting in Bulgaria Nikola Vaptsarov Vocational School, Radomir, Bulgaria and its Comenius team of students and teachers had the great pleasure to host their Romanian peers and colleagues on the second project meeting in Bulgaria between 20-29 June2014. The meeting in Bulgaria started with a tour to Sofia, the capital city of our marvelous country. The starting point was the Court House and the statues of the mighty lions in front of it. The next stop was St Nedelya Church where we introduced our guests with elements from the Bulgarian Orthodox church rituals and icon painting. The stroll continued with the statue of St Sophia, the building of the Ministry of Education, the Council of Ministers, the Presidency and the intriguing guards at the entrance gate, who being on silent watch, looked like motionless figures. Attractive was the Charlie Chaplin who attacked the guests with smiles and numb jokes. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which is one of Sofia’s symbols and the Bulgarian Patriarch’s cathedral church, enchanted with interior and atmosphere. Shopping, fun, good mood, cheer and laughter were all one could see that day. After lunch the Mall of Sofia offered answers to every taste. It was a day to remember and a promising start of the meeting. Tsari Mali grad is a unique historical complex dating to the IV – V century. Situated near the village of Belchin, famous for its mineral waters, the fortress reveals history, culture and myths. Ancient Roman roads once met there leading to Kyustendil, Samokov, Plovdiv and Sofia. This was the next destination our bilingual team visited. An eco path leads to the fortress, a climbing of several hundred meters which tests the strength of the body. Being young ecologists the students took the challenge to try the path. The fortress itself offered attractions like the rope bridge and the fortress watch towers, cannons, benches and numerous places for pictures. Inside the gallery halls there were expositions of tools and jewels characteristic for the life of the people who once inhabited the fortress and the region. A small marble fountain relieves the visitors with its fresh waters in the hot days. You can see coins on the bottom of the fountain or throw one yourself with the hope for fortune or health. The pictures from that day reveal the happy faces of the students and teachers. Laughter, jokes, respect and delight in front of the face of the culture and history left charming memories in the hearts... Monday...9.55 am. You could see a group of strange speaking people in the corridors of Nikola Vaptsarov Vocational School. There were faces looking a bit serious and expecting something to happen. It’s 10.00 o’clock already. Everybody was in the English study and the official opening of the ceremony began. Miss Mariana Kolarska, coordinator of the project, broke the ice with some welcoming words. The word was given to the headmistress of our school – Mrs Vasilka Stoilova, who expressed her joy and greeted the guests with a warm welcome. The meeting at school continued with a movie about the school, a tour around the school where guides were two young enthusiasts from the 9th and 11th grade. The official part ended with a quiz competition challenging the knowledge and fast thinking of the students. Students from Bulgaria and Romania were divided into two teams. Although they didn’t know each other well, the students from the two countries cooperated perfectly and the competition was held under the sound of laughter, clever remarks, jokes and good mood.

Page 37 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! Second Project Meeting in Bulgaria The final score was a difference of only one point between the teams. The students proved to be well informed and know a lot about the ecological issues and problems. The rewards for the two teams, a box of chocolate sweets, rose exclamations and cheer. The next step of the day was a visit of the Town Hall and a meeting with the Mayor of Radomir, Mr Plamen Aleksiev. The meeting was held at 14.30 in an official hall on the first floor of the building. The Mayor welcomed the guests, expressed his concern for the ecological problems and presented with few words the town, the region and the plans of the municipality for support of the young people of the town and the good news for trees to be planted in the local park.

Eco-friendly Planet… this is our Home, Keep it Clean! Page 38 Second Project Meeting in Bulgaria The day ended around the Svoboda square’s fountain where the students got cool in the hot day sprinkling each other with water. Have you seen how Romanian students speak Bulgarian? If not, you missed a lot. The next days were spent learning Bulgarian. Can you guess the age of the teachers? Quite a lot of strange questions, don’t you think? Well, strange as it may seem, teachers were teenagers of 14 or 15. Wow, that’s a surprise! Bulgarian students played the role of teachers teaching Bulgarian to their Romanian friends and teachers. Presentations, dialogues, speaking, riddles, dramatizations, brainstorming, games – all you can think of. The results – great! The young teachers faced the challenges of the teaching profession and proved that they can do really well. The students showed their fast learning skills and motivation to study. The atmosphere was the dream atmosphere for every teacher, class and classroom – learning and fun, all in one… The afternoons were busy as well. An eco path was to be made. Armed with nails, hammers, wooden signs, bird feeders and bird food a group of 40 enthusiasts took their way along a forest path. Forty busy bees were buzzing and chatting cheerfully, working together and marking the eco path. Being in the wild helps people unite and become closer. That’s what happened with the Bulgarian and Romanian students too. Friendships appeared, mutual interests were shared and there were topics to chat. Among all this there was an English speaking environment which was one of the aims and positive outcomes of the meeting. The days went by unnoticeably and the final two days were at hand. The Bulgarian team had chosen for a final stop the old Bulgarian capital, Veliko Tarnovo , a city of ancient history and rich culture. Looking from the top of Tsarevets the eye dives in the sparkling greenness of the landscape, the laziness of the Yantra River and the houses and shops huddling together. Picturesque and breathtaking are words not strong enough to describe the beauty of the region. The official dinner offered traditional Bulgarian cuisine and the ceremony for handing the certificates of attendance was solemn and festive. The evening ended with traditional Bulgarian folklore dances where both Bulgarian and Romanian students danced hand in hand. The past ten days will remain in our hearts forever. We proved once again that apart from our national and cultural differences we can be friends living and working together, making the world we live in a cleaner, happier and marvelous place for us, our families and friends.

Page 39 Eco-friendly Planet… This is our Home, Keep it Clean! What Bulgarian Students Say about their Visit to Romania The summer before my senior year in high school, me, my classmates and teachers took a trip to a completely new world. Being from a small town, I had never really been exposed to the elements of a large country such as Romania. My trip there was like discovering an entirely new way of life that I had only heard stories about it before. Our host teachers and students were kind and helpful; they showed us the Romanian hospitality and positive thinking. I’d like to express my gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Udrescu for the great job they did and that they did their best our journey to Romania to become an experience one of a kind which we will keep in our hearts forever. Our stay in Romania included different kinds of activities. We went to different places such as Dracula`s castle, a place famous all around the world which one should not miss to see if he/she happens to visit Romania. We had a tour around Targu Jiu which is a very lovely city with architectural monuments with great historical value. We had the opportunity to visit the Art Museum and to see the Kiss Gate and the Table of Silence which is made from limestone and twelve chairs. We saw the Endless Column, and the famous memorial of Ecaterina Teodoroiu who is considered to be some kind of a patron of the city. She was a brave woman who participated in World War I and who took an active role in the defense of the city. One of the most exciting experiences for us, the students, was the exploration of Retezat Mountains National Park where we were taught how to use a compass and then we took part in a compass orientation competition. We could also enjoy the beautiful nature of the Carpathians, the steep slopes of the mountains, the green and vivid meadows, the herds of cows, sheep and goats living peacefully in the countryside. I was impressed by the Corvinesti Castle with its fortress walls, watch towers and halls used for torturing the prisoners. I liked the trout farm, too, where we could see how trout is bred and of course we could see some very large specimens. My visit to Romania was a life changing experience. Maybe in the future I`ll go there again , but if I do it .. the trip should be with the same people that I was with the last time. P.S. The thing that I really liked was the attitude of Miss Kolarska , thanks for everything Miss ! Dayan Kozhuharov, 11a
