     An acquired hearing loss is a hearing loss that develops after a baby is born. This loss is also call adventitious hearing loss. The focus on an acquired hearing loss is on whether the loss was prelingual, prior to speech and language development. Or, it the acquired hearing loss was postlingual (Friend, 2014).

    Prelingual causes of hearing loss include prenatal infections, illnesses or conditions that happens shortly after birth. While postlingual hearing loss can be a result of an injury or a disease.
