SSystem aranac System Most Diverse River of The Adirondacks T he Saranac River System is composed of the three famous Saranac lakes known as the upper middle and lower lakes In the upper Saranac lake two types of fish can be found both cold and warm water fish On the other hand in the middle and lower lakes only warm water fish are present On the lower Saranac lake at the north end a dam forms Lake Flower which is adjacent to the Saranac village What type of fish can be caught on lower Saranac Lake Anglers fly fishing around these areas can catch largemouth smallmouth rock bass and pike These fish tend to be up to 40 plus inches in length As to trout they are not very common species in the Saranac region However if you are looking for trout on the Saranac the best place is below the dam at Union Falls where there is a good mile stretch of stocked brown and rainbow trout The sizes of the trout range from 8 to 16 inches with trout is the Black Brook and Little Black Brook which is close to the town of Au Sable Forks Additionally to help you explore the Saranac further brown trout can also be fly fished on Cold Brook and Alder Brook tributaries which flow into the North Branch of the Saranac River System Recommended Equipment for the Saranac River System We recommend using an 8 to 9 foot 5 or 6 weight rods these are great for heavier nymph rigs and steamer For dry dropper combinations for the pocket waters we recommend an 8 to 9 foot 4 weight For fly fishing on the shallower tributaries we recommend using shorter rods 7 to 8 foot 2 or 3 If you also are in the mood to try something different you can also take part in catchand release fly fishing which takes place downstream from Union Falls along the main part of Silver Lake Road In this location you will find decent sizes 10 to 14 inch of brown trout rainbow trout brook trout and the occasional smallmouth bass The diverse nature of the Saranac River System introduces anglers to many different types of species of fish that can be caught in many different locations on the river Many tributaries of the Saranac such as the Summer Brook which has great access points off the Oregano Plains Road in Bloomingdale has been seen to hold brook trout ranging from 10 to 12 inches Another tributary also commonly stocked 10 Lakes Ponds For any serious angler and canoe enthusiast this stretch of wild landscape is like a little bit of heaven To be precise the land is composed of 58 different bodies of water and 18 000 acres of pure woodland A s well as offering great river systems the Adirondacks also has great lakes and ponds such as the St Regis Canoe Area located outside the town of Paul Smiths in Franklin County Our favourite ponds located in the St Regis Canoe Area are Lake Pond Nellie and Bessie and Bone and Grass Ponds For all these ponds you get to enjoy some great canoeing trips on the pristine waters while keeping one eye out for brook trout commonly found in these ponds To easily access the St Regis Canoe Area in The Adirondacks we suggest going towards one of the main north south arteries running through the park such as the Keese Mill Road which is located 2 miles from Paul Smiths College Also if you are an angler looking to rent your canoe for the duration of the trip St Regis Canoe Outfitters are there to help Crua Outdoors Loj www cruaoutdoors com email info cruaoutdoors com 11

SSystem aranac System Most Diverse River of The Adirondacks T he Saranac River System is composed of the three famous Saranac lakes known as the upper middle and lower lakes In the upper Saranac lake two types of fish can be found both cold and warm water fish On the other hand in the middle and lower lakes only warm water fish are present On the lower Saranac lake at the north end a dam forms Lake Flower which is adjacent to the Saranac village What type of fish can be caught on lower Saranac Lake Anglers fly fishing around these areas can catch largemouth smallmouth rock bass and pike These fish tend to be up to 40 plus inches in length As to trout they are not very common species in the Saranac region However if you are looking for trout on the Saranac the best place is below the dam at Union Falls where there is a good mile stretch of stocked brown and rainbow trout The sizes of the trout range from 8 to 16 inches with trout is the Black Brook and Little Black Brook which is close to the town of Au Sable Forks Additionally to help you explore the Saranac further brown trout can also be fly fished on Cold Brook and Alder Brook tributaries which flow into the North Branch of the Saranac River System Recommended Equipment for the Saranac River System We recommend using an 8 to 9 foot 5 or 6 weight rods these are great for heavier nymph rigs and steamer For dry dropper combinations for the pocket waters we recommend an 8 to 9 foot 4 weight For fly fishing on the shallower tributaries we recommend using shorter rods 7 to 8 foot 2 or 3 If you also are in the mood to try something different you can also take part in catchand release fly fishing which takes place downstream from Union Falls along the main part of Silver Lake Road In this location you will find decent sizes 10 to 14 inch of brown trout rainbow trout brook trout and the occasional smallmouth bass The diverse nature of the Saranac River System introduces anglers to many different types of species of fish that can be caught in many different locations on the river Many tributaries of the Saranac such as the Summer Brook which has great access points off the Oregano Plains Road in Bloomingdale has been seen to hold brook trout ranging from 10 to 12 inches Another tributary also commonly stocked 10 Lakes Ponds For any serious angler and canoe enthusiast this stretch of wild landscape is like a little bit of heaven To be precise the land is composed of 58 different bodies of water and 18 000 acres of pure woodland A s well as offering great river systems the Adirondacks also has great lakes and ponds such as the St Regis Canoe Area located outside the town of Paul Smiths in Franklin County Our favourite ponds located in the St Regis Canoe Area are Lake Pond Nellie and Bessie and Bone and Grass Ponds For all these ponds you get to enjoy some great canoeing trips on the pristine waters while keeping one eye out for brook trout commonly found in these ponds To easily access the St Regis Canoe Area in The Adirondacks we suggest going towards one of the main north south arteries running through the park such as the Keese Mill Road which is located 2 miles from Paul Smiths College Also if you are an angler looking to rent your canoe for the duration of the trip St Regis Canoe Outfitters are there to help Crua Outdoors Loj www cruaoutdoors com email info cruaoutdoors com 11
