As CRU wine club enters our fourth month,  we couldn’t be more thrilled about the excitement our members seem to have for our club!  We have had some great events and very much enjoyed getting acquainted with everyone who has joined our journey.  Fall is upon us and the holiday season will be here in a blink of an eye.  There is no better time to create lifetime memories while sharing a great bottle of wine and the spirit of the season.  Over the next few months, we’ll be presenting you with wines that are great for gift giving and holiday entertaining.  CRU wine club is a great gift for any wine lover on your gift list this season.

Champagne & Sparkling Wine

Sparkling wine is a beverage that brings to mind several thoughts - celebration, success, luxury, love and romance. These pleasant associations seem to be as strong now as they ever were. And because the wine is offered with different levels of sweetness, menu planners use the wine as an aperitif or a versatile accompaniment to a variety of foods such as salty nuts and cheese, lightly-spiced fish and Asian dishes, fried foods, strawberries and more. 
Several U.S. producers label their sparkling wines “champagne,” and the U.S. government allows the use of the champagne term on existing brands but not on new brands as long as the geographic origin accompanies the champagne term on the label. Traditional wine grape varieties used in California sparkling wine/champagne production are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, though many other varieties are used, depending upon the style, production process and price point. 

Major Production Processes
Following are the two most common methods used for sparkling wine/champagne production:


Méthode champenoise--Still wine is used as a base wine in the process. A blend of base wine, yeast nutrient and a sugar source is added to the base wine. The mixture is sealed, fermented a second time and aged in the bottle, which captures the carbon dioxide released in the fermenting process producing the bubbles.


Charmat process--Still wines are fermented in a pressurized tank. Sugar and yeast are added for a second fermentation, but the wine remains in the tank for this stage of the process and is not fermented in individual bottles.

If you own a collection of bottles – don’t keep them standing up – this can cause the cork to dry, shrink and oxygen\air might get in the bottle.  Always keep the bottles lying down (Unless its an artificial cork.)

The 2012 Vieilles Vignes Blanc comes from 50-year-old vines planted in limestone and clay soils. A delightful bouquet of caramelized honeyed grapefruit, white currants and other assorted citrus jumps from the glass of this crisp, dry, medium-bodied white. With surprising length and power, it reminded me of a restrained, more laid-back top white Hermitage

In the Agly Valley, near the village of Maury, the vineyards are planted right under the Cathar Castle of Queribus, 20 km form the Mediterranean Sea.




2007 Santa Duc “Vielles Vignes” Cotes du Rhone

70% Grenache | 25% Syrah | 5% Mourvedre 

Medium+ body

The 2007 Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes (75% Grenache and the rest Syrah) is opulent, fleshy, and rich, with a dark ruby/purple color, medium to full body, and admirable flavor intensity.

Yves Gras of Domaine Santa Duc is a legendary producer of Gigondas. He lives in a section of Gigondas known as the garrigue. The garrigue is the arid, rocky section of vineyards that run north and south mid-slope between the Ouvéze and the Rhône Rivers. The roasted, dry soils are decomposed rock and the area is characterized by wild herbs, sage and cedar. The Vieilles Vignes is a blend of fruit from Gigondas’ neighboring villages of Vacqueyras (25%), Rasteau (25%), Seguret (25%) and Rouaix (25%). This wine is technically a Côtes du Rhône Villages, as it comes from the best designated villages in the appellation.

This Barbera d’Alba is definitely on the ripe side with chewy aromas of mature berry fruit. Acidity and firm structure kick in at the back and those ripe berry flavors last long over the wine’s thick, juicy finish.

The Rivetti Massimo winery is situated in Neive, in Piedmont; its vineyards stretch on the sunny hills of the Lower Langa.  Froi, which is in the commune of Neive is the business centre and it is property of the family since 1947.  It has always been intended for the wine viticultural production and with its wine-cellar and the twelve hectare vineyards it is one of the oldest structures in the area (which were already mentioned on the military maps at the end of the XIX century).

How to Hold a Glass of Wine? 


Wine glasses are beautifully shaped. They are also an example of form meeting function, where the glass itself is supposed to help enhance your wine-tasting experience. First, the bulb of the glass is shaped in such a way to help aerate the wine, enabling oxygen to interact with the living, breathing juice, thus release aromas that comprise a wine’s elegant set of scents, or the “nose” of the wine. Secondly, it has a stem for a reason. A stem not only looks elegant, but it serves two key functions:
1) It enables you to more easily swirl the glass and examine the wine’s color, key steps to take when wine tasting.
2) It provides you something to hold other than the bulb of the glass. Putting your hands on the bulb of the glass not only leaves ugly fingerprints but serves to heat the wine, which is undesirable for white and red wines alike. So when enjoying a glass of wine next, please avoid this wine faux pas and hold the stem, or even the base of the glass instead.

The nose has a sweet bouquet of ripe fruit, black cherries and kernels with jus a hint of liquorice. The palate is full bodied, round and robust. Offers a delicious balance between freshness, fruit and spices.

The marketing of wines were intended at first regionally : selling wines to cafes, hotels and restaurants. Pouilly and Fuissé are two distinct villages in the Mâconnais. The large wine area actually covers 4 villages to produce a good white wine sold under the name of Pouilly Fuissé.
Lying on a foundation of fossiliferous limestone identical to those found further north in the Côte-d'Or, the Bajocien escarpments of Solutré and Vergisson owe their dramatic profile to the presence of hard fossil corals which have resisted erosion.

This wine offers up a very pretty and vibrant nose of apple, white peach, spring flowers, a nice base of soil and a topnote of orange zest. On the palate, the wine is deep, full- bodied, crisp and wide open in personality, with fine focus and depth at the core, bright acids and good length.

This fine domaine is based in Chassagne-Montrachet, and its roots go back to 1809 when Guy Amiot built its’ first cellar. Of the domaine’s 14 hectares, 9 are owned and five are farmed.

Full body

Colour : Clear garnet red with orange reflections Nose ; Characteristic,with hints of vanilla , heavenly , pleasing and intense . Taste: Dry full , noble velvety and harmonious.

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of the Piedmont region in north-western Italy. Historically it was called Nebbiolo di Barbaresco (Nebbiolo being the grape it's made from) and was used by the Austrian General Melas to celebrate his victory over the French in 1799. Only in the middle of the 19th century was the wine we know today vinified into a dry style.

The 2011 Domaine Santa Duc ‘Aux Lieux-Dits’ delivers aromas of blackberry, mulberry, spices, chocolate, licorice, smoky ash and fresh lavender, which are just some of the nuances that come together in the glass. Full-bodied and well-structured, backed by underlying acidity that carries all the way into the finish.

Sparkling Medium body 

After a minimum of 18 months on the lees, the bottle is riddled to concentrate the sediment against the temporary cap, then disgorged and packaged. Our Franciacorta Brut displays a delicate, subtle bouquet that is still crisp and fruity, and quite long lasting; in the mouth it is attractively dry, with a velvety texture and exceptionally fine balance. The bead boasts dense, pin-point bubbles, with a foamy mousse seems almost endless.

In the heart of Franciacorta, in Camignone, lies the historic villa with its 16th-century wine cellars and surrounding properties that offers eloquent testimony to the venerable winemaking patrimony that the Barboglio family inherited in 1836.
