LAKE WENDOUREE What a great time was had by all who came our day at Lake Wendouree The weather even though a bit overcast was very kind to us There was lots happening on the day We started with morning tea and a chat Then Debbie Hall Tigrada Holistic Family Animal Care told us about her background in treating humans horses dogs and cats using the Bowen and Emmett methods Then she treated some of our Danes who were in need of a little TLC Deuce who had a sore back was the first to be treated and the difference in the before and after was amazing Several other Danes were also treated much to their benefit Then it was off for a walk through the beautiful Ballarat Botanical Gardens Beautiful colourful garden beds magnificent trees amazing ferns and the best ever grass Then a little bit of Australian history with a walk along the path with all our part Prime Ministers I came away want to brush up on my Australian history When we got back from our walk lunch was waiting for us thanks to our resident chef Trevor who had been cooking up a storm on the BBQ After lunch Dean had organized a ride on the Ballarat Historical Tram to all of us including the Danes Of course the seats were taken up by the Danes which was a bit of a laugh when other people got on the tram The only real sook was Morgan who was unimpressed with the tram and kept a close on the tram door for a quick getaway Ballarat is a wonderful place to visit with so many interesting places to see so maybe we can do it again next year

EASTER BUNNY Vs DANES Chocolate is toxic to dogs and other pets and ingestion often results in significant illness Chocolate is toxic because it contains theobromine a chemical similar to caffeine and used medicinally as a diuretic heart stimulant blood vessel dilator and a smooth muscle relaxant Theobromine can be poisonous and if eaten by our pets may result in severe clinical signs especially if they do not receive early medical treatment How much chocolate can my dog have The easy answer to this is none The amount of toxic theobromine varies with the type of chocolate The darker and the more bitter the chocolate the more dangerous it is to your pets Cooking or baking chocolate and high quality dark chocolate contains higher amounts whilst milk chocolate commonly used in Easter eggs has less and white chocolate barely poses any threat of chocolate poisoning The amount of fat and sugar in white chocolate however can still make a dog very sick and result in conditions such as pancreatitis This means that for a medium size dog weighing about 20kg it would take only 25grams of baker s or dark chocolate and 250grams of milk chocolate to potentially show signs of poisoning Approximate figures only Clinical signs of chocolate poisoning depend on the amount and type of chocolate ingested For many dogs the most common signs apart from the missing egg and the remains of foil wrapper are vomiting and diarrhoea increased thirst panting or restlessness excessive urination a racing heart rate muscle spasms tremors and occasionally seizures In older pets that eat a large amount of high quality dark or baking chocolate sudden death from cardiac arrest may occur especially in dogs which already have heart disease Complications such as developing aspiration pneumonia from vomiting can make the prognosis for chocolate poisoning worse Clinical signs of chocolate poisoning can take several hours to develop and even longer to go away Clinical signs of chocolate poisoning can last for days due to the long half life of theobromine The theobromine can even be reabsorbed from the bladder so aggressive IV fluids and frequent walks may be necessary It is important to seek medical attention as soon as you suspect that your dog has eaten chocolate When in doubt contact your veterinarian to see if a poisonous amount of chocolate was ingested to begin with If so your veterinarian may want to induce vomiting provided your dog isn t showing any clinical signs If a toxic amount is ingested you should have your pet examined by a veterinarian immediately The sooner the theobromine is removed from the body or the pet is stabilized the better your dog s chances If you have the packaging please collect this so we can gain an idea as to the dose your pet has received Treatment depends on the amount and type of chocolate eaten If treated early removal of the chocolate from the stomach by administering medications to induce vomiting and administration of activated charcoal to block absorption of theobromine into the body may be all that is necessary Activated charcoal may be administered every four to six hours for the first twenty four hours to reduce the continued reabsorption and recirculation of theobromine It is very common to provide supportive treatments such as intravenous fluid therapy to help dilute the toxin and promote its excretion All dogs ingesting chocolate should be closely monitored for any signs of agitation vomiting diarrhoea nervousness irregular heart rhythm and high blood pressure Often medications to slow the heart rate e g beta blockers may be necessary to treat the elevated heart rate and arrhythmia Source Vasse Vets

PICNIC AT THE HEIDE GALLERY Our BYO picnic at the Heide Gallery was a great day It was very laid back with likeminded company and a lot of laughter The weather was a little too kind being a bit on the warmer side but we all made sure we stayed in the shade of the beautiful trees Our Danes we beautifully behaved as usual with then getting lots of attention and pats from the people also enjoying the wonderful gardens After we had eaten our lunch some of us took a gentle stroll around the garden taking in the bee hives the kitchen garden and the sculptures which were scattered around the gardens Keith and Lisa went off to take in the Gallery which they thought was well worth the time and recommended that if others got the chance to go and check it out for themselves A big thank you to Charlie for bring a basket of his home grown tomatoes to share around I have to say my salads had a wow factor to them for the next week

ARTHRITIS INFO PART 2 Joint Supplementation Adding in joint supplements to your dog s diet is a must if your dog has arthritis Krill oil comes from crustaceans that live in the clean waters of Antarctica It is said to be cleaner than fish oil due to where it is sourced and the processes it undergoes to ensure quality and ecosustainability Krill oil contains powerful anti inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids DHA docosahexaenoic acid and EPA eicosapentaenoic acid and also has 47 percent more antioxidants than standard fish oil It has been shown to decrease joint tenderness and stiffness Green lipped mussel such as Technyflex contains eicosatetaenoic acid ETA which is a potent antiinflammatory and has been proven to reduce symptoms of arthritis and improve joint function in dogs while being gentle on the stomach Glucosamine sulphate is also a commonly used supplement for dogs with arthritis It works to help rebuild lost cartilage and to cushion the joints There are many dog specific brands available such as Blackmore s Osteocare in a convenient kangaroo chew Plants as Pain Killers Tumeric has been around for centuries as an important Indian spice but has also more recently become popular for its powerful antioxidant and anti inflammatory actions due to it s active agent curcumin Tumeric has been shown to be effective at soothing joint swelling and pain Speak to your homeopathic vet about whether turmeric is suitable for your dog and the correct dosage Rosehip has also increased in popularity for its effectiveness in managing arthritis in dogs without side effects It has been shown to reduce pain and increase movement in arthritis joints Canine Rosehips Vitals are a reputable source of rosehips for dogs with specific dosage instructions for your dog s body size Medical Management If you suspect your dog may have arthritis or you would like to be sure then head to your dog s vet for some advice and assessment Your vet should ask you a complete history about your dog s mobility and exercise watch your dog walk and assess your dog s joint mobility This is often sufficient to diagnose arthritis They may also want to take some x rays to rule out other causes of the discomfort Control of pain and inflammation are super important to the success of managing a patient with arthritis Based on their examination findings your vet will decide whether your dog requires prescription medication like a non steroidal anti inflammatory to make them more comfortable This may just be temporary but if your dog s arthritis is severe it may be a long term treatment Your vet may also recommend injections of a DMOAD disease modifying osteoarthritis drug such as Pentosan to help maintain joint health This is typically a series of 4 injections done weekly for one month then a regular booster is given often 3 or 6 monthly after this long term Once your dogs reaches 7 years of age they move into the senior pet category Make sure you discuss with your pet s vet at their yearly check up about their joint health and if they need any medical management

ARTHRITIS INFO cont PART 2 Physiotherapy Physiotherapy can play a vital role in the management of dogs with arthritis An experienced animal physiotherapist will fully assess your dog s body including their joints and their muscles for tender points shortening and weakness all common with arthritis They will then devise a treatment program to meet your individual dog s needs that will typically include soft tissue treatment to sore and tight muscles through massage and stretches and strengthening exercises for weakened muscles so as to support the joints The treatment may also include hydrotherapy Underwater treadmill can be extremely helpful to dogs with arthritis as it allows exercise in a semi weightless environment so it is gentle on the joints but is super controlled so we can carefully increase muscle strength without making the joints sore As your dog improves exercises will be progressed so they get the most from their program Heat and Ice Ice can be used on superficial joints such as elbow and knee when these joints are acutely inflamed The ice can help ease pain swelling and inflammation Use a commercial ice pack a bag of frozen vegetables or a bag with crushed ice wrapped inside a wet towel or chux and wrap around the joint for 10 minutes twice per day If your dog doesn t tolerate the ice then don t persist If joints are not acutely inflamed but are stiff and the muscles around them are sore then a heat pack can be helpful This can be helpful for the back neck hips knees shoulders or elbows Apply the heat pack just warm to the affected muscles or joints for 10 minutes twice per day Again just as with the ice if your dog does not tolerate the heat then don t persist Acupuncture Acupuncture can also be very beneficial for dogs with arthritis It can be used to reduce acute pain and inflammation as well as reducing muscle spasm around painful joints Acupuncture should only be administered by a trained acupuncturist Massage to the sore muscles Regular massage to the muscles surrounding the affected joints can help your dog to move more freely How often this needs to be performed depends on your dog s activity level and how severely affected they are Look for a qualified canine massage therapist or your animal physiotherapist can also provide these treatments

ARTHRITIS INFO cont PART 2 HEALTH STORIES Has your Dane had a health issue story that you think others would benefit from hearing about Please email your stories us so all members can continue to learn about our breed Thank you Gait aids If arthritis is very severe then a walking aid may help your dog to still get out and about and enjoy life but not make their joints more sore A dog pram can mean you can still get your own exercise or exercise a younger fitter dog while your arthritic dog rides along in the pram Once you get to the park your dog can hop out for a shorter walk around and a sniff so still getting good quality of life then pop back in the pram for the ride home Beats being left at home alone A wheelchair can also provide a similar solution If your dog s hind limbs are affected with arthritis but the front limbs are still fine then a rear wheelchair can allow your dog to go for their regular walk run with the rear limbs protected in the chair Harnesses A harness can make it much easier to move your dog around Sometimes they just need a little assistance to get up from the floor or up the steps or into the car A great brand of harness that we use in the clinic on a daily basis is the Help em Up Harness Michelle Monk Animal Physiotherapist Dogs In Motion Canine Rehabilitation
