The biggest cause of stress in students is an excessive amount of schoolwork and homework. Worrying about high-stakes tests is commonly known for causing severe symptoms, such as constant stomachaches and nausea. Every student tries to uphold strong grades and test scores, but this often takes time away from socializing with friends and family, and focusing on extracurricular activities. Not only do most students pinpoint homework as a primary source of stress, but they believe much of this work is “pointless”. Many students have reported that they find no purpose or benefit in the work they do, and they complete it merely to keep their grades up.

First of all, what is stress?

 

The term “stress” actually derives from an old latin word meaning “torn apart”. This describes exactly how the victims of overwhelming amounts of stress feel. It’s a sense of pure frustration, anger, and anxiety.

Overscheduling and abundance in extracurricular activities contributes greatly to high levels of stress in students. A student’s daily life can end up becoming too hectic with all of the events that they have planned. Many parents try to plan out their child’s everyday life in hopes that they will grow up and succeed, but they are unaware that one of the biggest stressors is over scheduling, and unfortunately, it may interfere with a student’s path to success.

 

Some effects of stress include...

 

 

-weight gain (or weight loss)

 

-sleep deprivation

 

-decrease in school performance

 

-physical pain (all parts of the body)

 

-headaches

 

-weakened immune system

 

-eczema and other skin conditions

-blocked flow of blood

 

-excess consumption of alcohol

 

-extreme depression

How can we relieve our stress issues?

#1. Laughter

"Laughter is the best medicine" is not an overstatement. This actually increases oxygen and blood flow in the body, which helps decrease stress.

#2. Listening to Music

 

Music can help calm you down. If you're ever feeling overwhelmed, putting on your favorite song can help you get through it.

#4. Excercise

 

Simple daily walks of 30 minutes daily can help your body produce endorphins and reduce stress. However, it is better to do more rigourous workouts. Yoga, in particular, is a great way to calm the mind and relax the muscles.

#5. Being Optimistic

 

This one is easy. Simply looking on the positive side of things will help keep you in a good mood and prevent you from getting stressed. The habit of optimisim can bring better health, relationships, and yes, better grades.

#3. Power Naps

 

These simple 20-30 minute naps can help counteract the effects of sleep deprivation, which is commonly found in stressed students.

#7. Getting a Pet

 

Spending time with animals has been scientifically proven to reduce stress. It releases hormones that make a person instantly feel better. In fact, many colleges bring in puppies during finals week to help the students get through their tests. Although many people don't have access to pets, finding friends or family that have some can effectively reduce overwhelming stress.

#6. Turning Off Your Devices

 

Taking a break from social media or any other electronic functions can help make a person feel better. Being on phones and computers for prolonged periods of time can actually create more stress.

#8. Staying Away From Cigarettes or other Nicotine Products

 

Many people think smoking will help people forget about their problems and relieve stress, but researchers have found that nicotine actually prevents serotonin, a stress-fighting hormone, from functioning properly.
