Volunteer Spotlight Anna R e Brings Art Science to Camphill Ghent Anna R e combines her love of art and science by teaching eurythmy to independent and assisted living residents at Camphill Ghent weekly bringing more than 30 years of practicing the art of movement to others It enlivens you it wakes you up Anna said of this 20th century art which is used artistically pedagogically and therapeutically for energy and healing purposes for people of all ages and skill levels Eurythmy is inspired by speech and music using movement to make them visible she explained Every sound of speech and every tone is actually in itself an invisible gesture she added Anna s eurythmy work is important in our community as it allows our residents to be active with their body and mind said Gry Brudvik Camphill Ghent activities director Raised in an artistic home in Chicago Anna loved both the arts and sciences as a child She studied chemistry at a Florida university loving the world of science and mathematics but becoming disillusioned with the premise that the two could not be combined with the arts She delayed graduation traveling instead to Germany where she discovered anthroposophy and later Camphill She met her husband Brian R e in a Camphill community in England Here I found something that combined the worlds of art and science she said It was the first place I finally felt at home she said She earned a master s degree in chemistry from Florida State University and then studied at Emerson College in England for two years eventually training in eurythmy in Germany Anna and Brian have lived at Camphill Ghent since it opened coming from Camphill Village in Copake where they were co workers for Anna and Brian R e 17 years ey are the parents of two sons and have three grandchildren I enjoy being grandmother and playing with our grandchildren she said In her free time Anna loves music and plays the lyre piano and recorder She enjoys spending time in nature going for walks gardening and stargazing Reduce Your Taxable Income Here s a great way to make a gi to Camphill Ghent If you are 70 1 2 or older and are required to take a minimum IRA distribution you can take advantage of a charitable rollover gi You could simply make an outright gi to Camphill Ghent from your IRA gi s to all charities cannot exceed 100 000 per taxpayer per year Your rollover gi will not be included in your taxable income Since an IRA is always subject to estate tax by making a gi to Camphill Ghent from your IRA you also will be removing taxable assets from your estate Former Chatham music teacher Steve Gitto le and elementary school principal Walt Balfour sharing a laugh as they reminisce ank you for helping with our important charitable mission For more information contact Nancy Benz at 518 392 2760 or nbenz camphillghent org

Walkway Paving Project Continues Residents are greatly enjoying walking on newly paved pathways around the beautiful Camphill Ghent campus thanks to a grant received from the New York State Department of Health e recently completed paving allows for greater mobility for walks around our scenic Keeshoh Meadow and tranquil Heron Pond Funding totaling 11 491 was received for the project through the Enhancing the Quality of Living EQUAL program Adult Homes and Enriched Housing Programs that provide services to individuals receiving Supplemental Security Income SSI and or Safety Net benefits are eligible for funding In addition to extending the paved pathways more benches chairs and decorative planters will be added along the walkways is is the fourth year that Adult Home Administrator Jo An Ellithorpe has applied for and received funding through the EQUAL grant program Monies have been used for the walkways fencing for our kitchen garden which provides organic vegetables and herbs for meals a garden shed a gazebo and patio furniture I am thankful to New York State for making this funding available and look forward to continuing the grant submission each year with the hope of bringing more necessary and useful projects to Camphill Ghent to benefit our residents said Jo An Chamber Series Soars into Spring Our winter spring chamber music series continues on Saturday Feb 11 at 3 p m featuring world renowned violinist Eugene Drucker cellist Roberta Cooper and pianist Gili Melamed Lev with a program titled Gili Melamed Lev seated with Brahms and the Spirit Specter of Cellist Roberta Cooper and Beethoven On March 18 at 3 p m Violinist Eugene Drucker Relationship at the Keyboard Music at Home will feature pianists Mark Evans and Melamed Lev performing pieces by Schubert Brahms and Lasser e 2016 17 concert series will conclude on April 22 at 3 p m with Remembrance and Celebration featuring Dvorak s Piano Quintet with performers from the Bard Conservatory of Music including Conservatory Director and cellist Robert Martin violist Marka Gustavsson pianist Melamed Lev and students and violinists Shuang Yang and Tianpei Ai Advance reservations are encouraged as concerts are regularly sold out according to Melamed Lev Tickets for all concerts are 25 for adults 20 for seniors ages 55 and older 5 for students and 55 for a family For reservations call 518 392 2760 or go to www camphillghent org First Student Volunteer Arrives Sharleen Kuna 18 of Germany arrived at Camphill Ghent on September 1 to work as a volunteer She will be here for one year living with Nick Gisela and Michael James Franceschelli in the farmhouse Camphill Ghent is beautiful and everyone is so nice said Sharleen about her initial months in our community She heard about Camphill Ghent through Freunde a German organization that o ers placements for volunteers worldwide Sharleen helps to serve breakfast to residents in the Aurora dining room of the Adult Home accompanies Adult Home residents on appointments and participates in an orientation program at Camphill Village Copake for young volunteers from Europe and Asia Sharleen is happy with her choice to take a social year o before returning to her native Germany to attend college to study social work e volunteer program Sharleen is participating in requires her to learn about American culture music the arts political awareness and other topics In her free time she likes spending time with friends exploring the area keeping in touch with her parents and three brothers and learning to crochet under Gisela s guidance It s a very big country so it s di erent said Sharleen I m enjoying my time
