ITALIAN ORIGINALS Luciano and Michele, decided to combine their talents and share their passion - and opened the doors to Rialto Foods in Cape Town in 1997 The Rialto story is a story of how two individuals, pursuing what they love, can make a difference. It is a story about Africa, about Italy, about Asia, about romance, soccer, coffee, tinned tomatoes and about soy sauce. Above all it is about bridging cultures, making connections and following your passion. 01 Luciano and Michele Cape Town, 2007 After two chance meetings, initially on the soccer field in Bedfordview, and again many years later in a coffee shop in Cape Town, Luciano Previtera and Michele Mirotto, decided to combine their talents and share their passion and opened the doors to Rialto Foods in Cape Town in 1997. Being second generation Italian Africans, they shared a deep understanding and appreciation of the quality and flavour of essential Italian foodstuffs, and they saw an opportunity to source and deliver these quality products into the local South African market. THE RIALTO STORY - 2 “The products that we import are well known, trusted brands in Italy, the brands that we grew up with,” says Previtera. Ironically, it all started when Luciano, whilst spending some quality time in the kitchen with his Nonna, decided to make a call to the supplier of her favourite peeled canned tomatoes. It was this bold enquiry that launched one of Rialto’s first successful import lines, and catalyzed the prosperous business Rialto has become today. THE RIALTO STORY - 3

THE JOURNEY TO AFRICA Inspired by his Mother’s passion and love of food, Luciano relied on his instincts and commenced a trading enterprise, procuring preferred goods from South Africa and transporting them back up to Zambia and Zimbabwe. SUCH WAS PASQUALINA’S PRODUCTIVITY AND DRIVE THAT SHE WAS FEEDING 4800 PEOPLE A DAY Rialto’s story began when Luciano Previtera’s great grandfather made the journey from Italy to fight in Italian East Africa. Having little prospects in Europe after the war, he decided to stay, make a home, and build a family in Africa. Little did he know of the effect that this decision was to have on generations ahead. In 1965 Luciano was born into a proper Italian household in Ndola, the third largest city in Zambia and the commercial centre of the Zambian copper belt. Requiring a genuine Italian education for their son, his parents sent Luciano, at the young age of 13, to boarding school in Genova. After his schooling and work on a several early construction projects, Luciano returned home to Zambia and was faced with a career decision whether to continue in construction or join his Mother in her busy food catering businesses. Such was Pasqualina Previtera’s productivity and drive that she was feeding 4800 people a day from her central food kitchen, and still found spare time to run her own restaurant. THE RIALTO STORY - 6 Inspired by his Mother’s passion and love of food, Luciano relied on his instincts and commenced a trading enterprise, procuring preferred goods from South Africa and transporting them back up to Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was a self-funded food and beverage trading business using third party transport and required both ingenuity and resourcefulness. It was now the late eighties and it was Luciano’s first time in South Africa where opportunities and markets were opening up and things were changing. In October 1991 he made the journey South down to Johannesburg and the prospects of a new beginning. It was at this time that he met two people who were to change his life and with whom he would embark on life-long relationships. THE JOURNEY TO AFRICA Rita Mirotto treated her family and their friends with the hospitality befitting an Italian Club. Michele’s ancestry was uncannily similar. His grandparents’ came from the small town Caserta, outside Napoli, and owned a salumeria and cantina, that his Nonna used to run and manage together with his aunt. After the war they also emigrated, and sailed from Napoli to Durban on the ship Africa, ultimately ending up in Johannesburg in 1958. Missing her daily customers, and in a new land, Rita Mirotto treated her family and their friends with the hospitality befitting an Italian Club. Michele was the youngest and always helped in the kitchen becoming accustomed to his Mother’s passion and perfection for food, guessing her techniques and observing any departure from her original recipes. Her signature THE RIALTO STORY - 8 ciabatta sandwiches gained fame at Michele’s high school and her homemade limoncello was unrivalled. Rita’s Sunday lunches, Christmas and Easter feasts were memorable and there was always hospitality and community for all. This inherent passion for food, handed down from generation to generation was in his blood and after a brief, entrepreneurial stint in retail clothing, owning his own menswear store in the Carlton Centre, Michele sold it and naturally gravitated back towards his true intrinsic passion - people and food - where he felt at home and where he was truly making a difference to the quality of people’s lives. It was because of this passion and perfectionism for quality food, that a friend who had invested in an Italian restaurant, Pane Vino, in Parktown, approached Michele for his advice and assistance. Together with the Calabrian chef, Michele turned the business around and sold it profitably after a year. Realizing his skill and enjoyment with this he applied the same model to a series of Italian coffee shops and sandwich bars, which took him to Cape Town. The first of these was on St Georges Mall, where he noticed the only eating establishment 01 Nonna Rita with her daughter, Johannesburg 1962 02 outdoors was a fast food outlet. With six Italian mamas in the nine metre square kitchen serving 32 tables, he pioneered the concept and culture of al fresco dining. Michele grew this restaurant to a chain of six stores and these successful cafés and espresso bars became the forerunners of today’s coffee culture - a natural manifestation of Michele’s vision and foresight. THE CAFÉ CONNECTION 01 The essence of the Italian café tradition 02 Michele’s first coffee bar, which was a forerunner of today’s local café culture 03 Michele doing what he loves THE RIALTO STORY - 10 MICHELE AND LUCIANO HAD REUNITED, AND THIS TIME HAD A COMMON PURPOSE AND PASSION BEYOND JUST SCORING GOALS! As any Italian bachelor would do, Saturday mornings was a time to enjoy a good coffee with friends, and so Luciano would head off to a small coffee shop in the Eastgate Mall where he enjoyed the warmth and conviviality of café culture. Fittingly, it was here, one busy morning, that he met his wife Carla. Likewise, it was on another social playing field, playing soccer at Bedfordview, that he had initially met Michele, and later, after a move to Cape Town with Carla and his one year old daughter, they met again by chance on St Georges Mall, in the café founded, owned and managed by Michele. Coincidentally Michele had been struggling to find good quality produce for his six cafes. Luciano walked into Panini’s, his infant daughter in the pram, and said “Ciao, Michele I have some beautiful tomatoes, do you want to buy them from me?” This need for Luciano’s Nonna’s tomatoes, together with their prior connection, sealed the deal and they agreed to commence a business. Michele and Luciano had reunited, and this time had a common purpose and passion beyond just scoring goals! THE RIALTO STORY - 11

A BOLD ENQUIRY IT SIMULTANEOUSLY EVOKED EVERYTHING TRADITIONAL AND EXOTIC - AN AUTHENTIC ITALIAN ASSOCIATION AND THE GATEWAY TO THE MARKETS BEYOND IN THE EAST. On a return trip to Italy to attend his grandfather’s funeral, whilst cooking in the kitchen with his Nonna, Luciano happened to enquire about the provenance of his grandmothers favourite tinned tomatoes. An intrepid call to the supplier concluded an agreement to send an initial shipment of the 3-kilogram tins to South Africa - and so commenced the business of Rialto as we know it today. From humble beginnings they rented a warehouse and slowly and deliberately built the business up into a stable customer base. Being loyal to their ancestry they registered their company’s name as Rialto Foods after the famous and historical Rialto Bridge spanning the Grand Canal in Venice. It simultaneously evoked everything traditional and exotic - an authentic Italian association and the gateway to the markets beyond in the East. The business grew organically, and the two, together with their driver Isaac who is still with them today, personally handled everything – receiving goods at customs, warehousing, distributing and stocking customers’ shelves, even on weekends. Indeed, one of Rialto’s biggest challenges initially was to sell South Africa and its growing demand for authentic, high quality food and love for Italian cuisine - a role in which Stefano plays a big part. ANTONIO CARLUCCIO “Above all he believes it is important to remain loyal to the ingredients and cooking traditions of his country.” THE RIALTO STORY - 34 KYLIE KWONG Passionate about food, entirely authentic, deeply traditional, and a proud custodian of Mediterranean cuisine and a celebrated chef, Antonio is regarded as the Godfather of Italian gastronomy. Being born on the Amalfi Coast in the South and raised in the wooded North-West has given Antonio a rare and privileged breadth of culinary knowledge. It was in Piedmont, at the age of seven, that Antonio started his life-long past-time of hunting and collecting mushrooms and funghi with his father and progressed into the successful restauranteur, author of numerous books and programmes. “To honour the integrity of food produced in this way, my style of cooking is all about emphasising simplicity, fresh ingredients and clean flavours.” Kylie is an Asian Australian business owner and chef who bridges two cultures, representing the new world and old, East and West, and who believes that our food choices should be ethical, sustainable and supportive of both the natural and human environment. Passionate about food, she is modern and professional yet holds high regard and deference for established, customary values which are reflected in her honest, accessible style. THE RIALTO STORY - 35
