Some people traveling west had obstacles to pass like rivers. Rivers were very hard to pass because the water was deep so some people drowned. Then they had to pass rocky mountains because some of the had snow so they were hard to go up or around. Some people that passed the mountains had trails for other people so they could guide them.

     Obstacles While Traveling

Technology like the Windmill was good for homesteaders because in the Great Plains water was scarce.the Windmill would bring the scarce water to the surface for people to drink. This technology was great for homesteaders.

The Windmill

Homesteaders come west because of the Homestead Act. But sometimes they disagreed with some people in the same area as them. like Other homesteaders and Native Americans. They lived in a place with no trees and scarce water, They lived in the Great Plains so they could not build houses out of wood they used Sod to build there houses. And they used something called the windmill for water so they could survive. They also had the homestead act which gave them 160 arces of land.

Homesteaders

The Homestead Act gave people 160 acres of land if they worked on it for 5 years. Built a house and made a fence line they would get 160 acres of land. It made it to where alot of people came west because of the free land from the Homestead Act.because of this, farming became more common because of all the land you had so farming became popular. Alot of Homesteader had free land because of this.

The Homestead Act

The Steel Plow was Made to help farmers till up the hard pack up so they did not have to use a shovel to shovel the dirt anymore. It helped because the flat dry land of the Great Plains was hard to break up. So the Steel Plow helped with that. When they started to farm the Great Plains (after the inventions) they started to call it American Bread Basket.

The Steel Plow

The Transcontinetal Railroad was a train that made a faster way for people to good west and made it faster to take cash crops like wheat, corn, etc. Flour Milling became common as well as meat processing in Chicago. Farmers started to make money too. The Transcontinetal Railroad had some routes that attracted people to go west. They put cash crops like wheat to the Flour Mill to makes wheat into flour, and made hogs and cattle into hops of meat.

Transcontinental Railroad

The Great Plains was a place with no trees and alot of grass and alot of people going west had to go through it. It was hard to survive in the Great Plains so they started to called it the "Great American Desert". And it was hard to farm on it in till the Steel Plow, Mechanical Reaper, and the Windmill were invented. After that people started calling it the "American Bread Basket". Because there was so much wheat that was planted

The Great Plains

In the west there were some unpredictable weather like Hail, Torandos, Snow, Etc. Also Drought in the summer made it hard for crops to grow. Hail smashed up crops like wheat so it was very hard to make a liveing in the rought weather. It also affected travelers The Hot Dry Summer made the travelers dehydrated and the snow made them really cold.Dust stroms made travelers unable to see the path or trail.
