● Counting Coins worksheet (Step 3)

, by Rozanne Lanczak Williams (this book can be found at your local library, and/or bookstore

or you can use the link we have provided below in Step 2)

● Coin manipulatives for each student (real, plastic, or paper coins)

● Prepared chalkboard/ poster

● Pocket/bag/bank

● Large coin visuals

● Overhead coins/ magnetic money

● Variation on The Pocket Song (Step 3)

● Count These Coins worksheet (Step 3)

Step 2: Teach Lesson

Tell the student, today we will be learning about coins, and how to count them. Let’s start by reading a book called, The Coin

Counting Book.

Read The Coin Counting Book

After reading the book, prepare the board or a poster that has problems written in large bold print, duplicating the problems on the

Counting Coins worksheet.

Point out that in the book, we read about how to count and add coins. We also saw many pennies traded for fewer coins that were

worth more. For example, 25 pennies were traded for one quarter.

Tell student, for the next activity, you will practice your money counting skills.

Hold up a bag/bank/pocket with coins in it. Have the student pull a coin from the pocket.

Tell the student, name the coin and say what is its value.

Fill in the first two blanks on the chalkboard with the correct value. Ask the student for an idea of how to figure out the value of two of

that same coin. The students may offer strategies such as counting on, using tools, drawing a picture, using their fingers, and using

their memory of the addition fact. Accept all strategies.

Repeat this step as many times as needed.

Invite the student to roll a coin cube and hold up a large visual depicting the coin rolled.

Ask the student, identify the name of the coin and the value. Fill in the blanks on the board as you guide the student to tell you

what to write.

Repeat this step as many times as needed.

Give the student Counting Coins worksheet and a coin cube.

Explain that they will be tossing the cube once for each problem on the page. After the first roll, they should record the value of the

coin rolled in the first and second spaces, then add the values to reach a sum.

Encourage the student to use coins or other manipulatives if they need to in order to add the amounts correctly.

When the student finishes their Counting Coins worksheet, invite them to share their sums. As they share, ask them if there are any

other coin(s) they could use to make the same sum.

Help the student brainstorm other sum possibilities.

Help them model with magnetic money/money visuals/overhead money; let the student practice using different coins.

Have the student complete the Count These Coins worksheet in Step 3.
