Though IMBD is officially the second Saturday in May each year in Canada and the U.S. (May 14 in 2016) and the second Saturday in October in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean (October 8 in 2016), we know that birds have different schedules. We encourage you to host your program or event when participants will be most likely to see birds. Spread Your Wings for Bird Conservation 2016 Conservation Theme The annual International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) conservation theme is an important part of the program, providing you with specific messages and information about birds and their conservation. This theme is selected by a team of biologists and educators, with input from the general public and IMBD host organizations. In 2016, International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) focuses on how birds have inspired many of the most significant environmental conservation actions in the Americas. For generations, migratory birds have connected communities across continents, providing unique opportunities for international collaborations and inspiring people to improve conditions for wildlife. Migratory birds cross political boundaries between their nesting sites and wintering grounds, exposing them to widely varying cultures, conservation philosophies, and laws. It is crucial that today’s migratory birds don’t meet the same fate as the Carolina Parakeet, a native emerald-green parrot with a bright yellow head and an orange face that was once widely distributed across the eastern United States. By the early 1900s, hunting, the demand for parakeet feathers for women’s hats, their capture for use as pets, and their vulnerability to disease culminated in the parakeet’s extinction. 2 Celebrate the Centennial Migratory Bird Treaty The Migratory Bird Treaty, along with a trio of international agreements with Mexico (1936), Japan (1972), and Russia (1976), forms the foundation of a century of concerted efforts to protect birds that cross international borders. Although signed too late to save the Carolina Parakeet, the Migratory Bird Treaty, which created a uniform system of protection for nearly all migratory bird species that inhabit—and often migrate between—the United States and Canada, has assisted in the survival of many other species, including Kirtland’s Warbler, Canada Warbler, and the Yellow-billed Cuckoo. This pact, along with the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act and a trio of additional international agreements—with Mexico (1936), Japan (1972), and Russia (1976)—forms the foundation of a century of concerted efforts to help protect birds that cross international borders. All of us have the capacity to support programs and laws that protect birds and their habitats. Get familiar with local, state and national efforts to protect birds and share them in your community. By working together towards this common cause, we will initiate another century of bird conservation.

Lionel Worrell - IMBD 2016 Artist Lionel Worrell spent his formative years in the West Indies. At a young age he expressed an avid interest in both wildlife and art. A tattered copy of Birds of the West Indies by the ornithologist James Bond provided an early insight into the immensely rich wildlife diversity of the region. After receiving a book of paintings by Canadian wildlife artist Robert Bateman, Lionel was mesmerised by the lifelike images that appeared to capture the very essence of their subjects and to tell complex and fascinating stories. From that point on Lionel has worked to develop his own craft, primarily painting North American wildlife. Learn more about Lionel’s work at lionelworrell.com. Protecting Birds Beyond Borders Governments have joined in the protection of migratory birds through treaties, acts, and other strategies. Learn about these and share information at your program or event. Convention on Nature Protection and Wildlife Preservation in the Western Hemisphere (1940) tasks participating governments to adopt protective measures for migratory birds and to prevent the threatened extinction of any given species. CITES - Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (1963) protects and regulates the trade of 35,000 bird species. It is one of the largest international agreements focusing on the trade of wildlife and has 181 members. WHSRN - Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (1985) is a conservation strategy that works to protect nesting, breeding, and migratory shorebirds.
