Stepping Stones The 37 Bodhisattva Practices Translated by David Goode Tucker
Preface A friend introduced me to the 37 Bodhisattva Practices. I wanted to impress her. I read Spiritual text a lot. My attitude was, ‘Read on, grasshopper. This won’t be anything special for a man of my advanced spiritual experience.’ The translation of the first ten fell into that comfortable groove where most Spiritual writing lives. It stayed in my head. I nodded wisely. My heart was still safe from attack. I breathed a sigh of relief. Then she read the eleventh practice. It begins, ‘All suffering comes from our wish for our own happiness...’ I was cut to the soft, throbbing quick of my heart. For days I kept going back to number eleven. Every time, it cut. Deep. None of the others touched me like that. They ran at me on a path my heart knew well and knew how to dodge. Me being me, I wanted all of them to wound me like number eleven. I looked at other translations. Still no blade. I found a commentary by H.H. Garchen Rinpoche, a lama I deeply love and respect: Blades... blades everywhere. The complacency I sought in order to hide and protect my love of the mundane trembled, afraid for its life. Hallelujah! I began putting the 37 Practices into my own words. I am a poet. I wanted every one of the practices to cut like number eleven. I studied Rinpoche’s commentary. I avoided esoteric Buddhist words, and I did not want

the hard stone of religiosity to dull these phrases. I wanted them to wound everyone. I will be fortunate if I speak and write English well by the time I die. So...in the lexicon of today’s academics, these do not qualify as translations. I do not speak or read Tibetan. You may call them whatever you wish. I call them translations because this is how I define the word ‘translate’: To change one language into another language in a way that the new words are still able to sing and dance. I picture my job as carrying the ancient words of Tokeme Zangpo across the wide ocean of time and culture, and when they step off the boat and into your mind, they can still sing... and they can dance. All that is really important is that we find a way to plant these truths deep in our hearts. That they grow and transform our lives into pure love and compassion. What else is that important? What else will bring us happiness? What else can we carry with us into death? On two of the pages are written the numbers 1 through 37. My suggestion: Cut them out. Put them in a hat or a bowl and, every day, pick one out. Live with it all day and night. Pauline and I do that. We have had some marvelous experiences. With my heart full of love and prayers, I pass these writings on to you, my friend. David Goode Tucker

We wake up, and we realize we are on a voyage. That we are traveling in this ship of human form... a rare opportunity. Gradually we learn that the Kiss is the only treasure worth the rigors of this journey. We stand our watch. We tend the rudder of our mind whether it is sun or cold. We sail toward the constant Kiss of unchanging Love where there will be relief from suffering. For us. For many. In this life. In any others that might follow.

Attached to my loved ones, I am stirred like an ocean in storm. Hating my enemies, I burn like fire. Darkness and confusion rush in. I forget what to keep and what to discard. If I release my grip on my loved ones and my enemies, we are all drawn into the embrace of the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

This life is filled with turmoil and distraction. Better to leave them. Better we go to the place of Great Peace that is within our mind. Confusion and anger will wither. Understanding will grow. We will watch ourselves drawn into the embrace of the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

We will die. We will lose everything. Our family. Our friends... work... money. Our Spirit will walk away from our body like a guest leaving the house. If we unlock our grip on it all, even our life, we summon the beauty of love and compassion. They are the only friends who will cross into death with us. They alone will carry us into the splendor of the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

Some people, too frightened to open their hearts to love and compassion, gossip, hate, want revenge. They do not believe in the Kiss. If you hang out with such people, you will become like them. You will forget your love of the Kiss. Pray for those people. Love them. But turn away and embrace the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

Some teachers love the Kiss more than life. When we follow the Kiss, we find them. When we love their wisdom more than our own life, the root of our suffering and negativity is dug up and discarded. Love and compassion are planted. That is the embrace of all who desire to live in the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

What is it that we secretly worship? Money? Family? Fame? Sex? They will not satisfy or protect us. They are all destroyed by change and death. When we discover the Kiss and embrace her, we lose our love for those things. Compassion for all life arises. We are drawn into the embrace of the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

All who have climbed the mountain of truth tell us: we suffer because we do not love compassion more than we love our own life. Even if it means death, we must chose compassion. Compassion contains the only true morality. Without it we do terrible harm. Nothing is more important. That is the embrace of all who desire to live in the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

Like morning dew on a sheath of grass, everything we do and say in this life will quickly evaporate. When our deepest intention is love... when, before anything, we desire compassion, time cannot dissolve our happiness, and we find ourselves drawn into the embrace of the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

We all live on the same ground of being. When we grab the passing joy, we abandon the meaning of life. We create suffering for everyone... especially those who love us. When we release our joy to the Kiss, we prepare the ground for every creature to live in harmony. We draw to us and to everyone the constant Kiss of unchanging Peace.

The wish to satisfy the vast cities of self-centeredness that rule our hearts is the source of all suffering. If, in my love, I am willing to sacrifice so you may walk out of the bondage of self, the walls of the cities begin to crumple. Such compassion is the only doorway to the embrace with the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

Someone may steal all of our money.... our things. Is it better to be angry at the thief, or is it better to remember what we owe them? We owe a great debt of love to everyone. Isn’t it better we give love to the thief rather than anger, for we cannot achieve happiness until the thief achieves happiness. That is the embrace of all who desire to live in the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

If someone tries to kill us, even when we’ve done nothing to them, we cannot fight or hate them. We love, or we lose the Kiss. Or worse, for us and for them, we block their path to the Kiss. To be wounded or killed is not the worst thing that can happen to us. To lose the Kiss makes life meaningless. That is the embrace of all who desire to live in the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

Someone may criticize and gossip about us. Their actions may cause people to distrust and avoid us. If we are angry with the critic, the Kiss disappears. If we open our hearts to them, look for their good qualities and tell everyone about those good qualities, we summon the Kiss for ourselves and for them. That is the embrace of all who wish to live in the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

If someone criticizes or slanders us, especially in front of others, we often become angry. Our anger steals the Kiss. We may love someone. We may love them as deeply as our own sweet child, and then they turn on us. Betray us. Act hateful. If we are hostile to them, we lose the Kiss. We may consider the famous more important than us. We may consider a beggar less important. When either treats us with contempt, and we are angry, we embrace chaos. See what they teach us: how we are able to love chaos more than the peace. When we accept that teaching and accept them as teacher, we invite the embrace of the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

We may live in poverty. People may ridicule us. Our health may fail. We may feel worthless. Please, please remember: it is only in the embrace of the Kiss that our suffering will cease. We may be adored by many. We may gain tremendous wealth. Please realize that the package that carries the gift of worldly attainment is always filled with pride. There is no Kiss in that box. We fight many battles. We think we win some. We think we lose some. Until we understand that anger is our real enemy, we lose everything. Our anger creates and feeds the failures in our life. The things we crave make us feel good for a moment: food, power, family, sex, money, beauty. It is like salt water. The more we drink, the thirstier we become. The further we are from the Kiss. Our mind creates our reality: Pain—Pleasure. Success—Failure Beauty—Ugliness. Hate—Love. In the country that hides behind such a construct, there is only the oneness that flows from the Kiss. As our mind finds it way into that land, contradictions stop and we are able to feel our unity with all creation. In that country we find the embrace with the constant Kiss of unchanging Love.

There is so much in the world that is beautiful. Beautiful to our eyes, our touch, our hearing, our taste. We grab for it... it disappears like a rainbow after the rain. If we can be honest about our motives, thoughts and mistakes, the Kiss can hear our call for help.
