THE FACTS Q When is the election Q What will the bond do A Tuesday March 14 2017 A This bond allows us to reinvest in our local schools and communities without raising the current tax rate Q What is on the ballot A A 172 5 million bond to meet our most pressing needs which will Relieve overcrowding Modernize classrooms and schools Expand critical job training programs Improve student access to music and athletics Increase student and staff safety Not raise the current tax rate Q Why do we need the bond A The State of Idaho provides no direct money for school construction Also A 2015 16 Facility Audit shows growing maintenance needs of nearly 330 million Aging schools Nearly half of Boise s schools were built more than a halfcentury ago Q How is the District able to raise 172 5 million without increasing the tax rate for property owners A Through sound financial management and long term planning rising property values in Boise expiration of the 2012 levy and the 1996 bond and the restructure of other long term debt we are able to authorize 172 5 million without raising the tax rate It s accountable addressing critical facility problems now so they don t cost taxpayers more later Addresses overcrowding and gives students access to safe modern classrooms and schools that reflect best practices in education and technology ensuring students graduate career and college ready This bond will create a positive legacy for our children and grandchildren all without raising the current tax rate Q What happens if the bond fails A With no significant and consistent revenue source to improve school facilities deteriorating facility conditions in the Boise School District will continue to go largely unaddressed The District would have to consider increased use of portable classrooms and program and boundary changes in order to address overcrowding in schools Q How many schools will receive funding A The Boise School bond will fund improvements in every school including 22 major capital projects Build six new elementary schools on their current sites A new school in the Harris Ranch area Historic remodels of Collister and Washington elementary schools Expansion of job training classes matched to needs of local employers such as A1 Plumbing TriState Electric and YMC Heating and Cooling Expansion of Timberline High Remodel of Boise High s old gym Expansion of physical education and music spaces at 11 schools Funding for ongoing maintenance and repairs for every school in the District General Fund dollars may have to be used in order to supplement critical facility needs which would reduce money available for curriculum and instructional materials Pierce Park Elementary
