St. John’s CDC November 2016
This month is a time to stop for a moment and give thanks.
The CDC is so thankful for our precious children and dedicat-
ed parents. Each day is a new opportunity to touch the lives
of each child that walks through our door.
The holidays are quickly approaching and for many of
us, it’s our favorite time of the year. However, if you
look out the window or drive down the street, you will
see that many people are not as fortunate.
So as you are reading this, think to yourself: what are
you thankful for? God has blessed the Child Develop-
ment Center in so many ways and the staff at the CDC
is so thankful for the support that the church bestows
upon us each and every
day.

What is a church member?
What does that mean? I
suppose it depends on who
you ask! Occasionally, I’ll
get a call from someone in a
time of crisis and they will
say something like, “I have-
n’t been to church in a while
(usually that means years),
but I’m a member
there.” Not too long
ago, I met someone
and asked them
where they go to
church and they said,
“I don’t go anywhere
but I’m a member at
St. John’s.” The most
extreme example of
confusion about
church membership
I’ve ever heard was a
young man who said he was
a member at a church I was
serving but he says he is an
atheist. That one is mind-
boggling. How can you say
you are member of the Body
of Christ when you don’t be-
lieve in the existence of
God? If you look in our
hymnbook, when we make
our membership vows, we
confess Jesus Christ as our
Savior and promise to put
our whole
trust in his
grace and to
serve him as
our Lord.
Then as members of this
congregation we promise to
participate faithfully in the
ministries of this congrega-
tion with our prayers, our
presence, our gifts, our ser-
vice, and our witness. On
the other hand, I know peo-
ple who faithfully worship,
serve, and give but never of-
ficially make those promises
and “join” the church.
I’m pretty sure as long as
the Church exists, we will
have some different ideas
about what a “member” is
and what a member should
do. But even more im-
portant than that is the
question: Are you a disciple
of Jesus? In John 14.6 Jesus
said, “I am the way,
the truth, and the
life.” Since Jesus is
the truth, the
Church should be
the keeper of the
truth as well as be-
ing doers of good
things in Jesus’
name. In John 14.7,
Jesus said, “If you
really knew me, you
would know my Fa-
ther as well.”
We may never clear up what
it means to be a church
member, but maybe there’s
a higher goal. Think how
different the world, our city,
and our church would be if
our goal was to help people
be able to say, “I really
know Jesus”.
Joyfully,
Kitty
