Édouard Manet was born January 23, 1832 in paris to mother, Eugenie-Desiree Fournier and Auguste Monet. In secendary school he went to College Rollin and in 1845, with the encouragement of his uncle Edmond Fournier, he enrolled into a special art class where Monet met and befriended Antonin Proust the future prime minister of fine arts. Monets mother was the daughter of a Diplomat and the goddoughter of the swedish crown prince, Charles Bernadotte. Édouard Manet father was a french judge and expected Édouard to follow in his foot steps. In 1848 Monet failed his navy exam twice and his father gave into Monets wishes to become an artist. from 1850 to 1856 Monet studied under Thomas Couture, the Academic artist. when Monet had free time he would study and copy old artists at the Louvre. while still studing under Couture, starting in 1853 until the end of his 'internship', Monet traveled to Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. while in these places Monet was greatly influenced by Dutch artist Frans Hals and Spanish artists Diego Velazquez and Francisco Jose De Goya all of which were realist artists during various periods.
