Step 2: Teach Lesson
Today, we will learn about antonyms. Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings.
What are words that mean the opposite called? Say it with me slowly. An-to-nyms. Remember that antonyms are words that
mean the opposite.
Write the following words on a board, or paper: heavy-light; friendly-unkind; smooth-rough
.
Look at these words. Heavy
and Light
. These words are antonyms. The desk is heavy. The pencil is light. Heavy and light
mean the opposite.
Look at these words. Friendly and unkind. These words are antonyms. The friendly man helped the lady across the street.
The unkind girl would not let the children play her game.
Friendly and unkind are antonyms. They mean the opposite.
Look at these words. Cautious
and Careless
. The man was a cautious driver; he always drove the speed limit and followed
the laws. The lady was careless. She forgot to buckle her seatbelt when she was driving.
Repeat steps with Restricted

Now let’s see how well you can match words that have the opposite meaning. We are going to play a matching game with
Antonyms. Give one side of the antonym word cards to the student, and post the others around the room.
Here’s how you play the game
You will have a certain amount of time to find the antonym to the cards you have. Provide a signal when time is up, such as playing
soft music while the student hunts. When the music stops, time is up. After the student has had an opportunity to find all the
Antonym Matches, read each set of antonyms.
Have the student pick one or two antonym pairs and use each pair in a separate sentence. Provide multiple opportunities for the
student to demonstrate skill mastery.
Now it’s time to use complete sentences by choosing the correct word.
Display Antonym Passage. (Step 3)
Discuss the Antonym Word Pairs first. Read the passage aloud.
Do the first example. Read to the first blank (number). Think aloud as you decide which word goes in the blank. Listen.
Reread the sentence. “The walls were blank”. Which antonym goes here? This sentence doesn’t help me that much, so I’ll read
the next one.
There were not any pictures hanging, and it needed to be painted. What word means there is
nothing on the walls? (bare)
Since the wall needed new paint and it didn’t have any pictures, it must have been bare or
uncovered. The best word here is bare.
