As the Middle East has undergone unparalleled change over the years and national and personal identities have been dismantled and rebuilt Palindromes challenges the notion of representation through an intersection of documentation narrative and expression addressing issues of social and political questions The project represents five series of images which range in genre from portraiture to staged narratives exploring themes of gender ethnicity and culture liberation and oppression objectification and power The main body of work which presents portraits of five women from the Middle East plays on conventions and stereotypes that developed in the 18th and 19th century known as Orientalism The title Palindromes is taken as an allegory that symbolizes storytelling The term Palindrome translates into a word phrase or other sequence of characters which reads the same backward or forward while a semordnilap itself a semordnilap of palindromes differs from a palindrome in that the word or phrase resulting from the reversal is different from the original word or phrase This logic is applied to the narration act the powerful female voices in this project adapt a personal and direct point of view to project an image of the Middle East and not from the point of view of the Media The photographer s aim is to ignite the exotic fantasies of the western world inviting viewers to reconsider their own preconceptions about the nature of sociopolitical realities in the Middle East and to build a cross cultural understanding by valuing our differences in hope of deconstructing Orientalism while constructing identities

The Orient is not an inert fact of nature It is not merely there just as the occident itself is not just there either This relates to Vico observation that men make their own history that what they can know is what they have made and extend it to geography as both geo graphical and cultural entities to say nothing of historical entities such locales regions geographical sectors as Orient and Occident are man made Therefore as much as the West itself the Orient is an idea that has a history and a tradition of thought imagery and vocabulary that have given it reality and presence in and for the West The two geographical entities thus support and to an extent reflect each other ORIENTALISM
