More From the PTSA Native Garden Introducing Lowell Elementary s Native Plant Garden Lowell Elementary partnered with the Bureau of Land Management and the US Fish and Wildlife Service has created an outdoor learning space that features Idaho native plants At Lowell we are fortunate to have strong leadership support for outdoor education from our Principal teachers staff and many volunteers Our extensive vegetable garden is a testament to this support and the native plant garden is the next step for supporting outdoor learning experiences Recent trends and statistics for children and their knowledge of the natural world point to a strong need for increased outdoor experiences Examples include The amount of outdoor environmental education programs offered in our local schools has been decreasing in the last 10 years The average American child can recognize 1 000 corporate logos but can t identify 10 plants or animals native to his or her own region There is a strong correlation to whether people have nature experiences as they grow up and whether as adults they will be concerned about policies that affect nature We believe that the native garden is a venue for educating students on the unique plants and ecology of the area It serves as an outdoor learning space where teachers can conduct classes pertinent to their grade level and provide learning opportunities for art and science in the garden aligned with state wide curriculum e Plants that have a place in Idaho s history such as Syringa Idaho s State flower or have traditional Native American uses could assist teachers in incorporating pertinent content in the outdoor classroom Opportunities to discuss how native landscapes have changed over time and for what reason could also be a topic of interest It is anticipated that the teaching staff will use this space for activities beyond natural history and science such as an outdoor theater space a venue for art projects and a quiet space for journal and creative writing Overall this garden aims to reveal the beauty of communing with nature coming together to appreciate what we have in our backyard and acknowledging our connection with this wonderfully diverse place we call home The native garden is in its infancy and needs some help to make it a success We are looking for a few volunteers to help with General garden maintenance Signage we want to create some signs that communicate our goals and objectives for the garden and to welcome visitors Metal Art Work we are considering options for incorporating some metal art sculptures or plaques that highlight important species that contribute to our native ecosystems e g butterflies bees birds small mammals others Build a short boundary fence between the grass fields and the native garden Create seating options Other ideas welcome If you are interested in helping in the garden have the skills to help build structures want to work with the kids to create some art work for the garden or just want to donate some supplies please reach out to the Native Plant Garden Coordinator Lynell Sutter at 208 577 1404 or lynelldd hotmail com In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks John Muir
