I NTRODUCTION The Heathcote Valley, the first established settlement in Christchurch, has always been known as a place with a strong sense of community, and has often been described as a village. In 2010 and 2011, this community along with the rest of Canterbury, was shaken to its core by violent earthquakes. Life was never to be the same again. Individual and communally, we experienced and continue to experience much adversity because of these earthquakes. We expected and braced ourselves for these challenges, many wondering whether our lives would ever feel safe and certain again. What many of us didn’t expect was the silver linings that would also flood our experience. As a community Heathcote has responded to adversity with positivity and courage, neighbours and strangers have become friends, and the future is being faced with creativity and a strong value on relationships and belonging. We have seen an emergence of creativity, innovation, and initiation. Residents throughout the community have championed new or revitalised existing, projects and activities. This book showcases and celebrates the many resident initiatives over the last 5 years. It demonstrates that every person has a piece of the story and a part to play. It shows that we can make a difference in our own lives and communities. 6|Page
