Non profit Organization U S Postage November December 2016 PAID 30 Tishrei 5777 2 Tevet 5777 Permit 249 Westport CT 06880 30 Hillspoint Road Westport Connecticut 06880 203 454 4673 www tcs westport org Affiliated with United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism FROM THE RABBY STUDY This past August Imam Maulama Akonjee and his friend Thara Uddina were walking home after praying in their mosque in Ozone Park Queens when they were brutally murdered they were shot in the back of the head A few days later I joined an interfaith group of clergy on a visit to the house of mourning of the imam While I have sadly entered a countless number of shiva homes during my life this was my first experience in a Muslim house of mourning I was unsure of what to expect The family welcomed us with deep appreciation and genuine embraces We explained that we had come with the hope of bringing them strength during this horrible time Representing different faiths we stood together as one people We prayed and sang together in a few different languages but the message was the same as fellow human beings we are all created B tzelem Elohim in the image of God Our visit that day reminded me that in a world that is often filled with much anger hatred and bigotry there is much more peace love and tolerance than our everyday news cares to report I was also reminded that life could be turned upside down in an instant This terrible crime could have easily been committed against a rabbi minister or priest It could have been our sons and daughters who were opening the doors of our home to receive the interfaith clergy visitors As we celebrate Thanksgiving as a society we have much to be thankful for as always Let us never take for granted the preciousness of life and the love of our family and those with whom we are so close But let us also continue to work to ensure that our world becomes a place in which hatred and violence is no longer acceptable Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving RABBI JEREMY WIEDERHORN

First and foremost our fabulous team of Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn and Cantor Luis Cattan They led spiritual and uplifting services for all to enjoy Their hard work partnership and devotion to our community were evident for all to see and made the Holidays truly special OUR STAFF A heartfelt thank you to Julia Brennan Carol Tirshfield Joanne Folger Kim Phillips Sara Glick and Danielle Hartog for working so hard for weeks to prepare for our special days We would be truly lost without your team And to Nelson Blanco Manny Diaz and Saul Santiago who worked diligently before during and after B NEI MITZVAH BEN KLEIN November 12 HANNAH SHARKEY November 26 BROOKE DEMBIN December 10 My name is Ben Klein and I m in 8th grade at Bedford Middle School in Westport Connecticut My favorite subject is Spanish One day I would like to visit a country where Spanish is the first language and be able to hold my own when I am there One goal I have for this year is to get 1st Honors in School for the third time Hi My name is Hannah Sharkey I am in 7th grade at Coleytown Middle School My parents are Linda and Scott Sharkey I have one older sister Julia who is a senior in college at the University of Wisconsin and an older brother Jack who is a junior at Staples High School I also have 9 year old dog named Chester Hi My name is Brooke Dembin and I m a seventh grader at Bedford Middle School I have a younger sister Raquel who is a fifth grader at Long Lots a step sister Jennifer who goes to college in Maryland and a step brother William who is a junior at Staples H S My mom s name is Shari and my step dad s name is Jeff Some things I like to do are play lacrosse and basketball I usually play midfield in lacrosse and in basketball I play small forward Last year my lacrosse team won the CONNY Tournament and my basketball team won the Rec Championship I like being part of a team I have a small family which includes my brother Elliot my mom Camilla and my dad Tom My mother s family is South African and my father s is Israeli Most of my extended family lives far away but we have cousins in Stamford CT and in Toronto Canada In the summer I go to Camp Moosilauke in New Hampshire for two and a half weeks It is one of my favorite places to go I have made a lot of friends there and have fun trying new things each summer This year we climbed Mt Lafayette Mt Little Haystack Mt Lincoln and Mt Liberty Next year we will climb Mt Washington I m happy that some of my camp friends will celebrate with me at my Bar Mitzvah For my Tikkun Olam project I did two things I collected coats for kids in Alamosa Colorado one of the coldest places in America and lots of children there are from families who cannot afford to dress them for the weather I sent 65 coats to Colorado for boys and girls in Save the Children s school programs I m also collecting lacrosse equipment for children in Israel where the sport is just becoming popular I d like to thank my mom my dad my Grandma Rabbi Wiederhorn and Cantor Cattan for helping prepare for my Bar Mitzvah I couldn t have done it without them My home away from home is Indian Head Camp in Honesdale Pennsylvania Indian Head is a big part of my life This upcoming summer will be my 6th year at camp In Westport I like to hang out with my friends and play sports like Basketball Field Hockey Dance and Lacrosse For my Tikkun Olam project I have chosen to work with the kids in the Friendship Circle The Friendship Circle is an organization run by all the Chabads in Connecticut At the Friendship Circle we extend friendship to individuals with special needs and their families I work to help create a warm and accepting environment and to form relationships that I hope will last a lifetime The time I spend with the kids is so memorable for me and I hope for the kids too I would like to thank Cantor Cattan Rabbi Wiederhorn and especially Debbie Smolka Without Debbie I still wouldn t know how to read Hebrew Thank you so much for all your patience while I was learning my parsha and prayers I would also like to thank all my Kehillah teachers for all their guidance for preparing me for my big day Lastly I would like to thank my mom dad sister and brother for being so supportive and helpful while I was preparing for my Bat Mitzvah and throughout my life Please join my family and me in celebrating my Bat Mitzvah In my free time I like spending time with family and friends baking and playing basketball For the past 5 summers I have gone to sleepaway camp at Timber Lake in Shandaken New York It is one of my favorite places to be I have met some of my closest friends there and can t imagine not having them in my life For my Tikkun Olam project I volunteered at Homes for Hope This very important local organization has helped shelter the homeless for over 30 years I spent time babysitting the children playing games and doing crafts with them I also planned a Halloween party for them It was such a rewarding experience I would like to thank Debbie Smolka Cantor Cattan and Rabbi Wiederhorn for helping me prepare for my bat mitzvah I also want to thank my family for their love and support during this amazing milestone in my life
