Working together to build private support for public education Newsletter March 2017 Women in Engineering Day at Lockheed Martin Over 70 female students from Twin Peaks and Black Mountain Middle Schools participated in Lockheed Martin s annual Women in Engineering event The students had the opportunity to hear from numerous women in the engineering field who highlighted the different ways women can flourish in the field The students were then divided into small groups and rotated between activities which required them work as a team and to think outside the box Activities included working with limited resources to create and launch a rocket using aluminum foil to create a load bearing boat and saving an egg that was perched on top of a stack of cardboard boxes The students came away with a new found interest in the field of engineering One young woman summed it up when she said I used to be worried that if I had a math or science job that maybe I wouldn t be interested in what I was doing But after hearing those women talk I realized that there are so many things in math and science I would be sure to find something that I loved Board Members LaDonna Bond Robert Gravina Jeff Mangum Christine Paik Joy Ramiro Kathleen Porter Executive Director 858 668 4041 Partner Spotlight 38 PUSD students were recently selected as high school Interns by Northrop Grumman Corporation Through their High School Involvement Partnership HIP PUSD students are able work side by side with mentors from Northrop Grumman HIP is one of the longest running educational partnerships in the nation The purpose of the HIP program is to provide high school students with real life work experience in a corporate environment and to expose high school students to new and different STEM based career fields All student placements are within engineering business development global supply chain and manufacturing Students will complete the internship over the next 17 weeks completing 170 hours with their mentors Congratulations to our students and thank you to Northrop Grumman for exposing PUSD students to such an amazing learning opportunity Internships Thank you to Blue Apple Ranch and Industrial Strength for proving three PUSD students with internships For more information contact Katie MacLeod Partners in Education Program at kmacleod powayusd com or 858 668 4031 March 2017 Page 1

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT AGRICULTURE Kate Golden our spotlight student has found success through the Career Technical Education CTE program in Poway Unified School District As a Junior she was unsure of her career goals When deciding which class to take she followed her love of animals and enrolled in the CTE Veterinary Science course She has now taken three CTE courses Agriculture Science Veterinary Science and Biology Sustainable Agriculture and has completed the Agriculture Natural Resources Pathway as a senior After being exposed to the field of agriculture through the CTE program Kate has found her niche Kate is now the president of the Future Farmers of America FFA organization and is employed at the Hatfield Creek Vineyards and Winery learning the science of viticulture Kate now feels confident in pursuing a career in agriculture and food security Words of advice from Kate to incoming 9th grade students Take a chance try a few CTE courses on campus you will find not only invaluable experiences but also a sense of belonging among other students with the same interest Take a chance try a few CTE courses on campus you will not only find a source of invaluable experience but also a sense of belonging among other students with the same interest 10th Annual Partners in Education Golf Tournament The 10th Annual Partners in Education Golf Classic will be held on Friday May 5 2017 at the award winning Maderas Golf Club Join education business and community leaders at this special event benefiting the Poway Unified School District Foundation Questions Contact Rosanne at 858 668 4041 rbrown powayusd com
