Martin Alvarez, recently awarded as the Business Person of the Year by Gloomberg, built his career in Nabe Appliances. The company he  leads since 2030 has become this year the world’s largest manufacturing company of appliances. Since 2030 Martin has leaded, as CEO, Nabe Appliances to the succeed they are now enjoying together.

 

When asking him about the business strategy applied he amazed us with such a brilliant answer: “There’s no strategy that allows you overcome a financial crisis like to one we lived the last lustrum, the key for business succeed lies on integrity. Integrity which is based on Respect and Responsibility leads any organization to the goal, our goal five year ago was to overcome the financial crisis without any layoff. Today Nabe is not only building new facilities, the workforce nowadays totals 5,000 more employees than 5 years ago and continues growing. We are now the main researchers, developers, manufacturers and sellers of appliances all around the world. A committed company with its workforce gets not only commitment back form them but also what we’ve called a business partner, that’s my story to tell.

 

If there´s any strategy it was based on the integrity model I was taught by Chris McCusker. When developing the respect side of the model by feeling empathy with your workforce and stockholders, leaving the blame aside, handling emotions, in adverse situations like the financial crisis, and being humble then you got half the job done. As a consequence, of  these actions and attitudes, responsibilities are developed in an outstanding way. Along these years I’ve handled five Vicepresidents in the different areas of the company and efforts have been done on assessing their leadership skills, neither financial nor mechanical efforts but those needed to develop leaders along the company.

On the responsibility side of the model, holding the senior managers accountable has let us stay involved with our employees and  this collective effort has kept us strong.

 

Life set me in the middle of this crisis and luckily inspired me a sense of  obligation, so there was not choice I had to encourage myself and faced with positive attitude the imminent threats, the outcome: I became a person imitated by my colleagues; the final result: our succeed.

 

When crisis began in 2030, after I was named CEO, everyone was on the expectation for mass layoffs, but when speaking honestly and with humility, treating people with respect and listening to their worries and complains, we get nothing more than self-confidence in themselves and anyone of our employees neither quit nor was fired.

 

Employees were worried about losing their jobs, stockholders didn’t want to assume more risks, the market didn’t grow as it was expected but I focused on the whole and I could see the crisis just meant that the financial succeed for the company had to wait for 5 years more. Then my 5 years plan was presented to the board and was accepted. Right now we are a solid company, in continuous growth and with an unstoppable workforce, all of this supports the award I am receiving today. Success was not reached by myself but by a team that worked together as one. That one in the whole was The Strategy: Personnel Development”.
