Tip 1: Top
Leaders are
Self-Aware
One of the most important things we can do as leaders is to
know ourselves. If you dont know yourself, you can’t lead
yourself or others effectively. Self-awareness,
authenticity, integrity, transparency are all
aspects of a strong character. There are many ways
you can start today in knowing yourself better. The key
though is to get started and make it a constant focus in the
coming year.
Steve Cockram, co-founder of GiANT Worldwide, author,
and speaker knows a thing or two about building self-
awareness. He’s devoted his career to exploring personality
type and through the lens of the Myers-Briggs Type
Indicator and, now, the 5 Voices, Steve is bringing
awareness to countless leaders around the world. He shared
some valuable thoughts with us on the podcast that we
immediately applied to our lives so we can be better leaders
in all areas.
Growing as leaders one step at a time.
“You have to know yourself to lead yourself.”
“We all have areas of our leadership that we're unaware of.”
“We need to commit to a real desire to understand ourselves.”
“You need to be interested before you will be interesting.”
“Transformational leadership is difficult but critical.”

Tip 2: Top Leaders
are True to
Themselves
As a leader the daily challenges which arise are
often very complex and decisions need to be made
with precision and decisiveness. As a leader, we
need to take an inside-out” approach
because, if we are not careful we can
fall away from being true to who we
are, which is what ultimately adds value to your
organization. Not who others think you should be.
Not who your spouse thinks you should be. Your
value is being your true self.
Josh Gagnon is lead pastor of Next Level Church,
one of the fastest growing churches in America.
He is also a highly sought after conference speaker,
leadership consultant, and mentor.
Growing as leaders one step at a time.
“We need to get to the point where it’s OK to be me.”
The best way to know what you’re going to be great at is to not chase
after what everyone else is great at.”
Yo u usually compare yourself against other people because you feel
that other people are comparing themselves against you.”
The danger comes when we try to replicate what others are doing
instead of following the vision that God put in our heart.”

Tip 3: Top
Leaders don’t
Control, they
Surrender
One of the greatest paradox of being a great leader is to
surrender, rather than control. Surrender may be
counter-intuitive to leadership, but it’s
actually essential for great leaders. Growth as a
leader or in our personal lives can only happen as a result
of surrender. Too many have bought into the idea that
life is better without surrender, it is undesirable and
unnecessary. This belief is untrue especially if you are to
grow.
Danielle Strickland, is an author of several books
including, A Beautiful Mess. Danielle serves in Los
Angeles as The Wester n Territorial Social Justice
Secretary for The Salvation Army. Danielle is an
exceptional communicator who spoke at the 2016 Global
Leadership Summit and inspires listeners to set aside
their limited expectations.
Growing as leaders one step at a time.
“The secret to being an authentic leader is not commitment but
rather surrender.”
“Surrender may be counter-intuitive to leadership, but it’s
actually essential for great leaders.”
“Not being in control is actually a strategy to get to new
places.”
“Stop avoiding the places that make you feel out of control.”
“If you don’t know what to do, do the last thing you heard.”

Tip 4: Top
Leaders Push
Themselves to
be Better Every
Day
We love the quote by Ray Kroc, “your either green and
growing or ripe and rotting”. As a leader, you need to always
be growing. This constant commitment makes you better,
those you lead better, and your organization better. It’s not
enough to stay in the status quo. The world is moving
fastand you have to move fast with it if you
want to be a high-impact leader.
Mark Sanborn knows a lot about driving for excellence and
getting better every day. As a bestselling author, speaker and
president of Sanborn & Associates, Inc., Mark has shard his
insights on customer service and leadership growth with
millions of people around the world. It was incredible having
Mark on our first podcast to talk about how leaders maintain
motivation and drive for getting better each day.
Growing as leaders one step at a time.
“It isn’t just about being different, it’s about being different and
being valued.”
“The drive to get better starts with awareness.”
“Ultimately MOTIVATION IS AN INSIDE JOB”
“We need to pursue learning outside of our comfort zone.
“Expectation without education equals frustration.”

Tip 5: Top
Leaders are
Accountable
to Themselves
and Others
Leadership often involves a high-level of accountability.
Often, the big “A word” can cause leaders to cringe
because it carries a negative connotation. But, here’s
another reality. Leaders not only hold others accountable,
but maybe even more importantly, they are
accountable to those they lead. They are
accountable to live with this highest character, grow,
provide guidance and direction, and create the conditions
for everyone to deliver on results.
Dan Rockwell is freakishly interested in leadership. Dan
was recognized by the American Management
Association as one of the Top 30 Leaders in Business of
2014 and INC as one of the Top Fifty Leadership and
Management Experts and Top 100 Great Leadership
Speakers. He is the author of the #1 or #2 most socially-
shared leadership blog several years in a row, Leadership
Freak.

Accountability allows us to fuel our passions to be the
best.”
“When we’re accountable we’re saying what we’re doing
matters.”
Accountability allows folks to rise up to their potential.”
“Mutual accountability is a powerful experience”
A culture of accountability goes both ways or it goes no
way.”

We live in a results driven world. As a result, one of the greatest
challenges for a leader is to get the best outcome possible. We try
so hard to control so many things…to create the “conditions”
for success. But, in reality, often the events in our lives are
outside of our control. However, our RESPONSE is
always within our control...and that’s where the
magic of leadership happens. We need to be consciously
choosing our responses in every situation to maximize the
potential of the best outcome possible.
Tim Kight, speaker, Founder and President of Focus 3 is an
expert in helping leaders achieve the best outcomes by focusing
on their response and creating the best conditions possible for
success. He has worked with some of the greatest college sports
leaders of all time like Urban Meyer and John Wooden. Our
time with Tim was extraordinary as he shared about his
“E+R=O” formula for leadership and life success. Just a little
time with Tim and you will never be content with just letting life
happen ever again.
Growing as leaders one step at a time.
Tip 6: Top
Leaders have
a Strong “R”
Factor
“E+R=O…Events plus response equals
outcome.”
“We need to pursue discipline-driven behavior instead of default-
driven behavior.”
“A l l day every day is a never-ending flow of events. We have no
control over the events, but we can control our response.”
Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you choose to
respond.”
You r “R” is an “E” for others.”

Tip 7: Top
Leaders are
Intentional
It’s so easy in life to just go through the motions, moving
from one thing to the next, without intentionality or
focus. In particular, leaders are often the victim of their
circumstances because they’re always trying to help
others be the best they can be. But, in reality, if we’re
not intentional with everything we do, we can
become distracted and ineffective. This is something
we have to guard against each and every day. To achieve
the bestwe have to intentionally be the best.
Corey Poirier, an award winning Speaker, Best-Selling
Author, TEDx and MoMondays Speaker knows a few
things about being a superachiever. Here are some tips
he shared with us on how to make the most of each
moment.

“To become an enlightened superachiever, you need to harness the
power of going all in.” – Corey Poirier
“When you wash the rice, wash the rice.”
“We need to make single-tasking the new sexy.”
Superachievers understand the power of ‘No’”.
“We need to understand that ‘No” is not a bad word.”

Leaders are
Focused on
Being a Leader
24/7/365
Sometimes work doesnt get done because of team members.
Sometimes work doesn’t get done because of bad policies, poor
communication, or a number of other institutional reasons.
The real reason work doesnt get done is because of poor
project management and poor time management. During
our time with Lee, he shared with us some practical ways we
can all get more done in all areas of our lives with the same
amount of time each of us has been given.
Lee Cockerell is the former Executive Vice President of
Operations for the Walt Disney World Resort. Lee led a team
of 40,000 Cast Members and was responsible for the
operations of 20 resort hotels, 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, a
shopping & entertainment village and the ESPN sports and
recreation complex in addition to the ancillary operations
which supported the number one vacation destination in the
world."

“It’s not just getting things done, it’s also doing the right things.”
“Leaders need to know the truth. This is built on building a
relationship with your team.”
“If you want to be trusted, you need to be trustworthy. When you don’t
reflect, you dont learn. The only person who can control your life is
you.”
“You need to pick it up and take responsibility.”
“If you dont take care of yourself you cant take care of others.”
