Introduction About Us History INTRODUCTION My passion for African art began over 35 years ago As an African American I have always felt a connection to African tribal art What began as an interest soon became an obsession as I wanted to know and learn as much about the people lands customs and artefacts we in the West call tribal art Like most people who begin to collect African tribal art I started with masks and statues which were produced by the trade for tourists I found these items aesthetically beautiful and intriguing however I wanted more I wanted the actual items that had been used I wanted a piece of history and I wanted to connect to my African culture Hence my company African Cultural Connection ACC was born In America there is a lot of African art on display in museums and galleries as well as some wonderful private collections But I knew that my love of African art would lead me to Africa where I could see and touch and learn for myself the culture of the African peoples I first travelled to Ghana in 2000 where I met dozens of traders in African art went to the villages to see how the artefacts were being used and met some incredible people along the way The stories the land and most of all the people left a lasting impression on me So much so that 10 years later I moved to South Africa For 30 years I have been collecting African art for myself and to share with the world through ACC Today my company has over 1 000 pieces from all over the continent from places including Nigeria Cameroon Mali C te d Ivoire Ghana Senegal and The Congo and many of these items have been for sale to the public For the past four years my focus has been on collecting African bronze artefacts and through my connections with the tribes throughout the continent I have been blessed to assemble one of the finest African bronze collections in the world Of course I am biased but you be the judge because in this catalogue you will see pieces that have never been seen outside of their native countries I am pleased to present to you the Rawlvan R Bennett Private Collection which includes the Yamba Palace Collection the Tikar Palace Collection and the Njimom and Bantou Collections It is rare to see such collections intact and many of the items featured here are one of a kind Please enjoy Rawlvan R Bennett

Ya m b a P a l a c e C o l l e c t i o n This series was commissioned by the Yamba king in 1852 and has been registered as part of the Yamba Patrimony since November 1961 The collection consists of four wood statues and two bronze statues The prize piece of the collection is the 2 5m tall Queen Maternity Statue The piece is one of a kind and exhibits some of the finest bronze work ever produced The wood pieces are beaded and consist of two thrones and two statues all excellent examples of the beadwork which can be found throughout Cameroon The other bronze in the collection is a larger than life size depiction of the Royal Hunter The collection is highly prized and historically significant 4
