2 Windy City Sports Cody Jerome has his hand raised to become the new IKF World Middleweight Champion April 29 in Burbank CA Photo courtesy Progressive Fighting Academy Teams from all over Southern Alberta hit the court for Lethbridge Minor Basketball Association s Battle of the Bridges tournament April 28 29 Southern Alberta s Golf News Available at local courses theforeoneone com Jerome brings home world title Just call him Champ Lethbridge s Cody Jerome added to his belt collection claiming the International Kickboxing Federation s World Amateur Middleweight title April 29 in Burbank CA Jerome fighting out of the Progressive Fighting Academy won a unanimous decision over Spenser Mix of California to take the title For Jerome the experience of fighting for a world title in front of a large crowd was an experience of a lifetime It s something I m never going to forget said Jerome It was an absolutely amazing experience Jerome and coach Brad Wall devised a plan of attack to take Mix off his game and the preparation paid off in a big way I was really confident heading into it he said Our game plan worked perfectly All I was thinking about was that I wasn t leaving that ring without that belt It wasn t easy though Mix held his own and pushed Jerome to the limit putting the decision in the hands of the judges I have nothing but respect for him said Jerome He was a really strong solid fighter Next up for Jerome is still up in the air He and Wall are working on where he should head next in his career a decision he isn t taking lightly We re still discussing what to do next he said I may head back to defend the belt and I m looking at maybe turning professional There are a lot of options out there

Windy City Sports 3 Kowolchuk repeats as Frontier Conference medalist Men s Adidas adipower boost 3 Regular 199 95 Now only 159 95 jwalkergolf com While Supplies Last Gina Kowolchuk Photo courtesy University of Great Falls Magrath s Gina Kowolchuk defended her Frontier Conference title running away with the 2017 title The University of Great Falls junior shot rounds of 75 75 71 at the Arizona State s Karsten Course on Tempe AZ April 24 26 claiming the conference championship by a whopping 18 strokes I had been confident going in said Kowolchuk after the final round I had been putting up some good scores putting and hitting it well Even with her game in top shape Kowolchuk was surprised by the size of her victory There are a lot of girls out there with a lot of talent she said To pull it off was a really good win A key for Kowolchuk was a bounce back after taking an early 10 She says she was determined not to let one bad hole affect her tournament To blow up like that and come back was a huge confidence boost she said After that I had a chance at four birdies in a row and starting rolling the ball better The win was Kowolchuk s fourth of the season and continues her remarkable season The whole season has been a blur between golf and school she said I had no idea this year would be this successful and that I would be able to play this consistently The win also earns Kowolchuk an automatic berth in the NAIA Women s National Championship to be held May 23 26 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens Fl This will be Kowolchuk s second trip to the tournament and she looks to make a good impression She s excited to be representing UGF at the tournament I m just going to keep practicing and get prepared for the tournament she said I know it s a boost for everyone in the school and for golf at the school to have a player get the national attention

4 Windy City Sports Martial arts tourney gives back to community Legacy Tae Kwon Do is celebrating a milestone this year The local martial arts school is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their International Charity Tournament for KidSport May 6 7 at the University of Lethbridge About 250 athletes from Alberta Saskatchewan British Columbia and as far away as Arkansas and Tennessee will be competing in the tournament Darin Gibson with Legacy and Tournament Director says the event is a special A passed ball results in a close play at the plate as the Cubs and White Sox do battle in Southwest Little League action at Canola Harvest Field one for many competitors as they know the proceeds will go to a worthy cause We started it because we wanted to host an event that would bring martial artists together while also being able to give back to the community Gibson said We ve donated between 60 000 to 70 000 to KidSport over the the years so we feel pretty good about that Working with KidSport was a good fit for the club Gibson says the values of the group meshes very well with the teaching of Tae Kwon Do We both want to help young people improve themselves and hopefully this can remove some financial barriers they may face he said The funds all stay in Southern Alberta so it s nice to know that they stay in an area that needs it the most The event will also feature multiple world champions competing as well as many Masters and Grand Masters in attendance A special guest will be Grand Master C K Choi who was recently inducted into the B C Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport He was truly one of the pioneers in the sport in the 50 s and 60 s said Gibson It s great that he s in his mid 70 s and still stays actively involved in the sport Any time I get a chance to spend time with him I truly treasure it Opening ceremonies take place at 10 a m Saturday May 6 at the University of Lethbridge s First Choice Savings Centre Matches will continue all day Saturday and Sunday More information can be found at http www r2sports com tourney home asp TID 20074

5 Windy City Sports Coaldale Kinsmen gear up for Demolition Derby Who doesn t like smashed up cars and a whole lot of mud The Kinsmen Club of Coaldale knows everyone likes a smash em up Their annual Demolition Derby is nearing and they look to continue to see it growing The eighth annual event is set to go on June 3 and 4 this year This year it has been split into two days with the derby going on Saturday and the mud bog on Sunday Last year over 8 000 people came through the gates prompting the club to seek a new location It was getting a little tight with that many people there so we needed a larger plot of land said Jack Van Rijn with the club The event will move from the southwest side of town to the northeast corner They have an agreement with the Town of Coaldale to hold it there for the next four years The group has also seen an increase in participants as well as spectators The derby sees between 30 to 40 cars taking part in full size mini and truck classes while the mud bog had 79 vehicles entered As far as we know it s the largest demolition derby in Western Canada said Van Rijn We get people from all over Alberta as well as from B C and Saskatchewan To help alleviate the length of time the event goes a second 200 foot pit will be used in order to run the mud bogs two at a time As well the event will start earlier The Kinsmen Club of Coaldale has raised over 175 000 from the derby and it has all gone back into the community The money raised has gone towards building parks in Coaldale and surrounding area as well as an outdoor rink and a portion of the Coaldale Spray Park One hundred per cent of the proceeds go back onto the community said Van Rijn This year s Demolition Derby and Mud Bog will be held June 3 and 4 For more information visit www coaldalekinsmen com Follow us windycitysportsab windcitysports windycitysportslethbridge Players of all ages traded in their ice skates for rollerbaldes as Roller Hockey Lethbridge kicked off their season April 20 at Labor Club Arena Progressive Fighting Academy Mixed Martial Arts 1007 3 Ave N Muay Thai Kick Boxing 403 327 3744 Lethmortgageguy ca Jason Hueppelsheuser 403 795 0802 jhueppelsheuser mortgagealliance com
